The vacation and 'mind-clearing' adventure has begun. I have landed at the Phoenix Airport and am on the way to pick up my rental car. Let's hope I luck out and get a good one. After a night of dealing with problems back at home, it's nice to finally relax and get away. So, let's venture out and see how hot it really is in the Desert Southwest.... read more

Hi again! Today we stayed close to Phoenix, since we have the big trip to the Grand Canyon tomorrow. We enjoyed a workout at the gym here at the Rio Verde clubhouse, and then we went to Saguaro Lake, about 30 minutes outside of Phoenix. It is one of four manmade lakes created by the damming of the Salt River. It is 10 miles long and a popular place for boaters. We took a 90 minute boat tour. From our guide we learned how to identify some of the different species of cacti, how to distinguish between mesquite, ironwood, and palo verde trees, but as for animials, the guide kept saying, " . . . and here is where we would see such and such animal, but it's probably too hot today . . ." ... read more

Hi everyone! We made it to Arizona yesterday. All of our travels went very smoothly. The visibility on our flight was great almost the whole time. It was really neat to watch the landscape change so much from piedmont to mountains, to plains, and then desert. Our greeting and brunch with Aunt Joan and Uncle Bob was delightful and delicious. Afterward Aunt Joan was a wonderful tour guide, showing us around Fountain Hills and Rio Verde, where their condo that we are staying in is located. Uncle Bob joined us later at Rio V., as he was busy with the AC repairman, and we couldn't blame him for wanting to get that straight, seeing as the temperature was 116! Aunt Joan must have done a good job on our tour, 'cuz we managed to find ... read more

So turns out I had that District Conference Blog written all along and just forgot to publish it! Oops!! So, after the conference, Rosemary and Niki stayed at my house for the week, and we went to the beach, hung out, went dancing, were actually fairly lazy but that's fine, it was just fun to be together! (*awwww haha) That weekend was supposed to be a good bye party in Culiacan, a city in northern Sinaloa, above Mazatlan. Turned out that the powers that be didn't have time to plan it because of some issues with a couple exchange students, so we all got an email that we didn't really havea reason to go. But the 3 of us decided to go anyway, because we already had houses, and we would go visit people (even though ... read more

Got up at 5am today and headed out to Pinnacle Peak. BEAUTIFUL VIEWS. Not even so hot. Wind was actually almost chilly. Went to the highest point of the trail then headed back. Found a great place for breakfast, The Good Egg, on the way back to the resort. Stuffed ourselves so we won't have anything else major until a hot dog or nachos at the Diamondbacks game we're going to tonight.... read more

It's WAY hot in Arizona North America » United States » Arizona » Phoenix By Jeb and AnnaJune 5th 2007 We headed out this afternoon (Tuesday) to the trail riding place. Way overestimated the time to get there. Sat in the car reading the extensive legal release form. Trail ride was fun except for Anna getting a little dizzy despite doing all the right things (lots of water, good meal, sunscreen). Likely heat stroke said the guide. Afterwards we headed back into Scottsdale to have dinner at P.F. Changs since Anna informed me yesterday she really always wanted to try it even though it was the ... read more

After a quick swim through the casino (where we got $10 cash each for joining their players club), we drove into town and spent the afternoon Monday looking around in old downtown Scottsdale. Lots of indian trading type places. Saw some very nice looking jewelry. "Thank you for humoring me" Anna was heard to say. After checking out one place that was a trading post / art gallery - some amazing pieces carved from petrified redwood etc, we decided it was just too hot to walk around any more. We would have taken some pictures, but the cheapo batteries that came with the camera had gone to meet their maker. We headed to a place called Loco Patron for dinner. Yummy guacomole and margaritas. Additionally the waitresses seemed to be of very questionable moral fiber ... read more

This’ll just be a quick entry - we’re heading to San Francisco in a few hours and I’m not sure whether we’ll have access to the internet at the hostel. Our last week in Phoenix has been really nice. We went to the cinema to see ‘Hot Fuzz’ (overlooking the horrific violence it really made me miss England!) Have to comment - this spell check is trying to make me capitalize that ‘miss’. Trust the Americans to turn it into a beauty contest! We have also visited a cowboy town called ‘Rawhide’ - and yes they did play that song repeatedly. Not even the decent Blues Brothers version though. It was a good day, and I saw a donkey wearing a cowboy hat (I’m sure they shouldn’t do that, and on my picture which I’ll put ... read more

So its been a while, for once through pure idleness rather than lack of access though. We arrived in Phoenix just under a week ago now and it is such a different place than anywhere else so far. We've done a huge city, tropical marshland and now the desert. Its nice to be mixing it up. The flight was good and it had the bonus of landing 40 mins early amazingly. Still had to wait when we got there though because we didn't see Rebecca who was picking us up. We were both stood at opposite ends of the baggage claim and didn't notice each other! Luckily it was only a few minutes before it clicked. On a slight aside, baggage claim is really wierd here, instead of collecting your bags and then heading to the ... read more
