We have worked our way from Carlsbad Caverns to Phoenix, stopping in Las Cruces for a lovely meeting with the Zeitlin/Kelter family. Some thrilling moments: The Macdonald Observatory last week, the Living Desert Museum, and hearing a little Teirstein music on National Public Radio in Las Cruces. At White Sands we waded through sand dunes and even sledded down a few. Sadly, in Arizona we began to realize that our dog Jenny is fatally ill. The vets here in Phoenix did an ultrasound and found a tumor near her heart, so we will face some difficult decisions ahead. We are with good friends here, Uriel Grunfeld and Moshe and Pam, who have put us up while we rush the dog here and there. We may have to postpone our Mexico trip, now ticketed for March 24th. ... read more

Ugh, it is early. When my alarm rang at 3:15 this morning, I couldn't believe it was time to wake up. So, now I am sitting in the gate area of my favorite airline. Wow, the quality of the general traveling public is rapidly declining. I am (not by choice) sitting across from a woman who keeps talking about how her crying baby's diaper needs to be changed, yet she is making no effort to change it. Instead, she is whipping her breast out of her shirt and shoving it in the kid's mouth. Now, I am all for breast feeding as a natural, and healthy, way of feeding infants, and respect a woman's right to do it when necessary. However, as a gay man, may I please make one request: BRING A FREAKING BLANKET TO ... read more

WOW! What a great trip out West. I got to spend time with Toni and Queenie, two of my best friends from Stephens. It was thrilling to see a part of my country that looks SO different than the rolling, tree covered hills of GA. And going to La definitely made me understand why everyone thinks it's so great. Because it is. It is a BEAUTIFUL city. I flew out to Phoenix and Toni was there to pick me up. I couldn't believe I hadn't seen her since Graduation in 2004. It really did my soul good. We spent some good quality time seeing Phoenix, including a tour of all the theatres Toni had worked at! It was shocking, however, when she told me about the state of the theatre community there. There is ONE paid ... read more

In March, my brother (Cory), his friend (Fike) and I finally made the trek to see the Royals during spring training. We'd heard that it is an experience to go, but we were dubious. How much fun could it be to see a bunch of no name players (ok a few good ones too) play in meaningless practice games? Let me tell you, it was a blast! To anyone out there that is a baseball fan, you HAVE to go to your respective favorite team's spring training camp. You won't regret it. It was almost baseball overload, if there is such a thing. We went to 4 games, 3 stadiums and 2 practice sessions in 3 days, as well as a NBA game. ... read more

Obfuscator writes: We got up at what I call “stupidly early,” since Onaxthiel apparently likes to beat the sun up. )(Onaxthiel adds: I don't like to beat up the sun. I think it would win the fight. I like to be doing things before it has time to react.) As I slowly roused myself and blinked a lot, he wandered about taking pictures of the county park at dawn. There were some pretty flowers in a few places, and we got our first good look at the Saguaro cactus that we had heard so much about. These weren't particularly large ones, but they must have all been at least 12 feet tall. We started toward Phoenix, but got derailed by the Ben Avery Shooting Range. This massive facility is the largest outdoor range in the world, ... read more

"The TSA has raised the threat condition to orange. Please report any suspicious activity to the nearest law enforcement official." I love that PA announcement. So, I have been a little lax on writing my blog. I guess it is because nothing really, truly interesting has happened. However, I had another "You travel too much" moment (actually two moments) when I arrived to the airport tonight. 1. It is really, really bad when you recognize that the security line has been remodeled since last week. It has a much more open and airy feel... maybe it is because most people traveling choose to not travel late at night from Phoenix??? 2. It is also really bad when you notice that the gate areas for My Favorite Airline have all been recently painted and the background color ... read more

So, I felt complelled to tell the story of my flight as it reminds me (somewhat) of a flight I took on My Favorite Airline. We schlepped out to the airplane across the tarmac (no, it was an Airbus 320, not a little Regional Jet), and boarded from the rear of the plane (nothing like feeling like a backdoor passenger). And then the fun began. I'm reminded of sitting in an exit row on My Favorite Airline to ATL back several months ago. We had almost finished with the boarding process and the exit row right behind me had two empty seats. Suddenly, two passengers (who truly represented the word "steerage") came lumbering up the aisle from the rear of the plane and planted their rather robust hind ends into the exit row. Well, one of ... read more

Nothing like watching the sunrise from the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. I am trying to keep an open mind regarding my flight today on "Phoenix's Hometown Airline" but it is getting more and more difficult. I'm sitting very patiently in the gate area looking at the quality of passengers in this terminal and am frankly quite surprised the majority of them figured out how to get to the airport (they must have taken a cab). So, today I get to fly to what is supposedly a relatively major airport in CA... except they don't have jet bridges. Imagine, deplaning from an Airbus 320 via stairs at the front and rear of the aircraft. Now if they just served food and had a smoking section, I would feel like it was the 1980s again. I am kind ... read more

We headed for Saguaro National Park opting for the eastern park, Rincon Mountain District. Since we'd be pulling the camper, we thought the park with the paved road would be best for us. The cacti were amazing, such a variety of types, sizes and shapes. We learned that the Saguaro grow very slowly and don't develop arms until they're around 75 years old. They can live to 150 to 200 years under the right conditions and can get as high as 50 feet tall and weigh 8 tons. We saw barrel cactus blooming with yellow flowers, teddy bear cholla, looking anything but teddy bear cuddly, creosote bush, mesquite, and of course prickly pear. It was amazing to see whole hillsides with forests of cacti. We then headed to Phoenix to spend time with my brother, ... read more

We crossed over into the USA at Nogales. We knew we had reached the border when we hit traffic and crept ever so slowly forward for over an hour. It was snowing and sleeting outside. We had been dreading the crossing but it was painless. Customs and immigration were pleasant. We saw the high wall that tries in vain to keep illegal Mexicans out of the USA. On the other side we instantly noticed more order, more cleanliness, and a more modern environment. We passed through Tuscan where we dropped off most of the Mexicans (they need special permission to go further) and picked up an American who Pieter talked with for the rest of the trip. In Phoenix it was dark and we only had to wait 20 minutes for Amanda (a Couch Surfer) to ... read more
