Well, the pack is ready to be stuffed. The bounce box is ready to go. My dealings with the business are wrapped up and Mike is up to speed on everything. He's going to do fabulously while I'm away...even on the paperwork!!!!! I'd like to thank ALL of you who wrote such encouraging comments. I cannot tell you how much they mean to me. I will remember them on those lonely moments out there. People have asked me why the bald head. Initially, it was sheer curiosity. When Mike first shaved his head, I was curious to feel all those different sensations he was feeling: cold, sunburn, raspiness on the pillow as the hair grows back, etc., etc., etc. At the time I said if I ever go on another extended hike, I'm going to shave ... read more

Phoenix: a disappointment.... we found that Phoenix didn't have much to offer for visitors. A big airport and many modern building and resorts.... not quite we were expecting. We however went to a place called Organ Stop Pizza. It is a restaurant that is home to one of the biggest organs in the world. You listen to it as you eat your...pizza. Isn't that very sophisticated? It was actually a lot of fun! the next morning we went on the Apache Trail. It used to be a trail the indians used, then a road was built near it following the trail closely. It is a single lane dirt road winding through the mountains where you can see awesome cacti and plants. It was one of the most beautiful scenic routes we took. ... read more

The last few days I have been worried about two things: murdering thieves and murdering, thieving bears. Several friends encouraged me to get a gun, and I did consider it, however, I believe that preparing for war manifests war. So instead I will prepare for a damn good adventure. It’s about time we evolve past man against nature. How about man is nature? So no, I will not be sleeping with a shotgun in my tent. Unless you are a murdering thief, in which case I have a ready arsenal pointed at my tent zipper and I am not making that chck-chck shotgun loading sound with my mouth just to scare you away. If you are a murdering thieving bear, the good stuff is locked in the trunk, unless you are craving skin, bones, fleece, and ... read more

Phoenix With the traffic delay and hungry tummies we decided to set up camp in a trailer park just outside of Phoenix. Thankfully this one had a pool as even well into the evening it was still 38oC! The next day we drove into Phoenix and once again made sure we picked a campground with a big pool! We went out to see the Arizona Science Centre but got a bit lost with the major roadworks and detours in place. We realized that we had parked a long way away from the centre and just couldn’t bring ourselves to take the hike (it was way to hot). There was no one else out on the footpath so we decided to find another activity whereby we could hide inside in the air conditioning as the locals were ... read more

We're in Scottsdale now, waiting to leave to wait at the airport to wait until the flight lands in NYC. That's a lot of waiting. We've passed the time by watching the camp video, painting our nails, and watching Arrested Development. I bought a crossword puzzles book that I'm excited about starting, and I had forgotten how much I love children's books sections in bookstores. That's about all for now, but tomorrow I'll try to update while we wait for our ride to pick us up. Happy trails!... read more

Well, let's talk about Phoenix. It was a lot nicer than some people led me to believe. And there were saguaro cacti everywhere. Cute, cuddly cacti. They're so awesome they're even alliterative!! However, the next time I have business down there I want more than four hours notice...it's a long drive from Vegas! My cats are so weird. They drink bathwater and/or attack my backpack on a regular basis. Bizarre critters. I love them. I think sometimes I would go nuts if I didn't have them. And finally, gender dynamics are funny. Somehow, when I registered for some short summer courses I ended up paying in-state tuition even though I haven't lived here a year. Actually, I know how it happened. The person I was dealing with in admissions was a guy--whose gaze kept oscillating between ... read more

Hi All- I still have a few more days before I leave--Sunday evening to be exact. If I haven't finished everything by now, I'm done for (come up with colorful wording here). Thanks to all who have given me support and ideas on where and what to explore. I start off in Sevilla then go up the coast before the high tourist season starts. I'll make sure to post with lots, and lots of pictures. Bye for now, Chris-- Teach, Learn, Share, Grow... read more
