Day 17: Latitude 35.21, Longitude -114.01, 95 degrees in Kingman, AZ, and a whopping 113 degrees when we pulled into the Hoover Dam. Starting Mileage today, 3793. We woke up and said goodbye to the tranquil grandeur of the Canyon as our Wolfpack climbed aboard Silver Sally and headed into the exact opposite, to the decadence and den of inequity that is Las Vegas. However, as we were traveling along we realized that since we were on a road trip across these United States we should at least spend a couple miles traveling along Historic Route 66 to live the out the song and cruise along this piece of Americana. We needed lunch and what better place than a Drive-In. Albeit a Sonic, it was still a drive-in. And the best part was that ... read more

Sorry for the delay - conversation and bourbon conspired for a missed blog post last night. Today was great for two reasons. Reason #1 was the sites we got to see, which were amazing. Reason #2 was I didn't have to drive - a first since Illinois. With the side trip down to Abilene, we've done 2,700 miles already on this trip and I've driven every one of them, so the opportunity to just sit back and look at the sites was definitely appreciated. We piled into Ron's car around 9am and headed out into the desert, driving the Oatman Highway - an incredible, twisting/turning road through the mountains and over the Sitgreaves Pass. A few miles on you pull into the town of Oatman, one of the strangest places I've ever seen. The town itself ... read more

I have seen the quality of God's work. And it is good. Anyone remember Bill Cosby's routine about this? It was one of the funniest things I'd ever heard at the time and still resonates today. The quality of God's work: Good. Not great, not fantastic...not AWESOME. Good. We invented words like fantastic and awesome. Man made a car, said Fantastic! God made a tree, said Good. Man made a refrigerator, said Awesome! God made a rabbit, said Good. The wheels fell off the car and the refrigerator stopped working. The tree's still up and the rabbit's still running. This is not a sermon. There will not be collection after this. It's just a worthwhile precursor to what I saw today. And what I saw can change lives. 6:30am found us on the road north from ... read more

Hinter jedem Busch, unter jedem Stein, jedes Geräusch könnte ... read more

7th May 2013 Packed up the bikes and headed off to Joshua Tree National Park. Was chuffed to find we could buy an annual pass that would get us both and the bikes into all national parks, thought we would have to have one each, so saved 80 bucks. The drive through the park is spectacular, desert with astounding rock formations, not to mention the odd Joshua tree. Chose our stop and set up camp. There is no water whatsoever in the park, so we had stocked up the night before. Supper consisted of packet chicken rice and corn flour tortillas - quite revolting! Went for a lovely walk and stopped and chatted with fellow bikers, now have a contact number if we run into trouble on our travels further north. Wonderful clear starry night, but ... read more

We don't know if we have slight colds, hay fever of if our nasal passages and sinuses are just completely desiccated due to the very low humidity here?? Not to worry, apart from having sore noses and sinuses, we feel OK. Yay, this morning we had the Mustang's nose heading west right from the get go - no doubling back to catch up on what we missed yesterday today! We set off on the I-40 for a short while until we reached the exit for Bellemont and headed off on a very scenic stretch through Brannigan Park and and over Fortynine Hill, the highest point of Historic Route 66 in Arizona. We were quite excited to see some more prairie dogs along the Wagonwheel Road/Old 66 section of the drive. There were several prairie dogs scampering ... read more

Hi everyone, we are parked here in a place called Kingsman,AZ. It is HOT. Last night we were in Bakersfield, CA and I thought it was hot......today going across the Mojave desert and it was 103 degrees at 11am. The Hwy 40 was straight..........and hot. There were a change in the surrounding areas as we headed East. From farm land to cacti and odd rock formations. Eventhough it is sooo hot, the beauty is vast. We found out that California fuel (diesel) is higher than Arizona. The RV park in Bakersfield was very nice, Bakerfields Palms RV Resort was what it was called. It was older, but had a new section that we stayed in and it was very southwestern (all cement and palm trees). It had a pool, that we really enjoyed. Close to groceries ... read more
