We are woken again by the rain in the morning however by the time we go out for breakfast it has stopped but it still is overcast. We decide to explore the area so we drive on muddy roads up to the nearby mesa. On the way we notice two deer and while we try to get a good picture they elude us always moving behind trees or bushes to frustrate us. In the end we only get one acceptable picture before moving on. Stopping on the mesa we are surprised at how quiet and out of the way it seems even though we are only a few miles out from Flagstaff - we don't see another soul during the 3-4h that we hike around. There are lots of meadows with beautiful flowers and we think ... read more

We wake up to the sound of rain and a quick check outside confirm that it is drizzling. So we start packing and there is a lull in the rain which allows us to eat breakfast outside and to finish packing. But then it starts to rain again and we barely can see the mountain peak that we wanted to hike up to so we change our goal to the nearby River Lava Cave. River Lave Cave is a 0.75 mi (1.2 km) long lave tube - this means that while it is a cave it has few of the features most commonly associated with caves such as stalactites and stalagmites and it is straighter with fewer side passages making it more difficult to get lost. When we get there it is still early in the ... read more

After a quick breakfast and packing our car we leave the Valley heat as fast as possible driving towards the higher altitudes near Flagstaff. We watch happily as the outside temperature falls from close to 110 F(45C) in Phoenix to 90 F (32C) as we ascend to 5500 ft (1700m). We decide to make a short break and exit at Stoneman Lake - the vegetation is still desert-like and there are no pine trees yet. However to our surprise as we stretch our legs we find some ancient Native American pottery shards - quite interesting find in a random location. Still it is warm outside especially with no shade so we move on higher into pine territory. Next exit we are safe into pine territory at around 6500 ft (2000 m) as we exit at Schnebly ... read more

Holbrook is on the doorstep of the famous Petrified forest national park. Essentially a large expanse of desert which millions of years ago was once a floodplain/jungle littered with trees. Dead and torn up trees were washed downstream and slowely covered by sediment and volcanic ash leading to fossilisaiton. Now they are re-emerging from the desert floor and providing spectacular sights (and a horde of souvenier shops!). A little further beyond the forest park is the famous Meteor crater, the site of a long passed meteor impact. Arizonas second largest hole. We made our way into the mountain town of Flagstaff to stay for the night before tomorrows drive up to the Grand Canyon, Arizonas largest hole. Also happened to find a nice microbrewery for dinner :-)... read more

Today we stayed in the same place in Flagstaff. This KOA is really nice.... crowded, but nice. We intended on leaving for our day's adventures at 9am, but didn't get out until 10:30. Anne drove about 50 minutes south (giving Tony a break) to Camp Verde where we explored the African wild animal park "Out of Africa". It was very cool... actually, very hot, but we liked it a lot. First we went on a safari tour to an area where they have giraffes, water buffalo, zebras, and all sorts of other African safari animals. Then we took the tram up to the snack shop in the middle of the reserve where you can walk freely around the outside of lots of habitats. We saw grizzly bears, lions, tigers, panthers, prarie dogs and lots of other ... read more

We started out a little earlier today (6:40) and so did the heat. It was over 90 degrees by the time we left the Needles KOA at 9:15. Tony repaired the bike rack again.. this time with 2 types of tape (one of them duct), locktite and a rope that the host was kind enough to give to us. It held up pretty well.. only a little vertical movement after a reasonably rough day of driving. On our way out of Needles, we stopped by the PGE plant near the I-40 bridge over the Colorado river. My uncle Paul is doing some work there to clean up the soil. We saw the old Route 66 bridge transformed as a pipe transport with all sorts of things hanging off of it. We also found a BIG ASS ... read more

Ho, hum ... another day, another crater, but this morning we set out to visit a volcanic crater at Sunset Crater National Monument which is located within the Coconino National Forest just 15 miles from Flagstaff. Our annual passes saved us the US$5.00/person entry fee. You used to be able to hike to the rim of Sunset Crater, but that path has been closed to protect the fragile environment of the cone. However, you are able to hike to the rim of nearby Lennox Crater so, once again, undeterred by the extreme heat, altitude, etc we set off. It was a steep and difficult climb over loose, volcanic ash. Very much a case of two steps forward, half a step back! I don't know how I found the breath to talk as I climbed but, as ... read more

This morning we started off heading east, doubling back to the south end of Petrified Forest so that we could walk the Giant Logs Trail and the Long Logs Trail. Would you believe it, the ranger that we encountered twice yesterday at the Painted Desert entrance station was on the Petrified Forest entrance station this morning. She must really think we are obsessed now??! We don't know how early you need to start to take advantage of the cool of the morning because it was already stinking hot again by 9.00am. So we sweated our way around the Giant Logs Trail, which features some of the largest and most colourful logs in the park. 'Old Faithful', at the top of the trail, is almost ten feet across the base. Impressive. The Long Logs Trail has one ... read more

Day 35: Grand Canyon to Flagstaff, AZ Today we had to leave the Grand Canyon for new places. Kerry and Charlie had already been to the three parks we planned to see today, so they went back through GC Village and south to Flagstaff out the south entrance, while we left by the east entrance and headed to Wupatki NM, Sunset Crater NM, and Walnut Canyon NM. We stopped at all three visitors centers, walked through the ruins at Wupatki, saw Sunset Crater and its lava flows and cinder mounds, and the ruins of the Walnut Canyon cliff dwellings and still got to the campground by 1 PM. This campground is like a parking lot, not particularly level, noisy (busy highways all around), and the restrooms that look like they have NEVER been cleaned (they are ... read more

Bob and Gena left the campground early this morning, heading for Wupatki and Sunset Crater, two parks we’ve already seen. They ended up going to Walnut Canyon, also. We dawdled around and left the campground around our usual time of 9:00 and went into the Canyon Village to mail some postcards and buy some more. We stopped at McDonald’s in Tusayan, outside the park gates, for breakfast. Those rip-off artists charge in-park prices, more than $14 for 2 McGriddles and a large Iced tea. They’d make more money if they charged regular prices; people would flock in for cheap food. The wind blew strongly all night and continued all day. The dust blew everywhere, further blurring the mountain views. At Flagstaff we stopped at Black Bart’s RV and Steak Joint, as agreed upon last night with ... read more
