Distance driven today: 259 miles / 417 km Cumulative distance driven: 3,695 miles / 5,947 km Today’s trip: Panguitch, Utah, USA to Flagstaff, Arizona, USA Grand Canyons driven through, in and around: 1 US state border crossings: 1 Most of the day today, I was either riding around, through or inside the eastern rim of Grand Canyon. Even though this is my fourth visit to the canyon, over the past 15 years, it never ceases to impress. The eastern canyon rim, though less deep and spectacular that the western sections, is still beautiful and grand in every sense imaginable. For one, you can actually drive inside the canyon on the eastern side, something which gives a good perspective on its immense size. Perhaps the biggest take away from the canyon today, is the fact that earth ... read more

The helicopter trip over the Grand Canyon had been the highlight of our whole trip so far. Getting to see if from above and grasp how big the canyon is was crazy. There are parts where it is 24km wide and once you fly over the edge you are suddenly 1.4km from the canyon floor. It was put into perspective when the pilot, who was a funny dude who to,d us a heap of information, told us the Colorado river at the bottom, which from where we were looking looked like you could throw a stone from once side to the other was actually 100m wide. After landing we still felt like we were on top of the world and bought the video so we can relive it back at home. After our flight we jumped ... read more

In 2011 Margo and I visited “The Lowell”, one of America’s oldest and most prestigious private research institutions. It was founded at Flagstaff, Arizona in 1894 by Percival Lowell, scion of a distinguished Massachusetts family, mathematician, eminent scholar, author, indefatigable researcher, and lifelong student of the universe. He built its reputation and directed its work until his death in 1916: since then it has been governed by a trustee who is a member of the Lowell family. With Mars as his first subject, Lowell’s research branched out through the entire solar system and beyond. He was aided by a number of assistants and research scientists, all supported by his own finances. The observatory is probably best known as the place where decades of searching for a mysterious “planet X” finally led after his death to the ... read more

Sunday, 15 June, 2014 Driving this morning was much easier without yesterday's strong winds, although the wind picked up pretty strong this afternoon. Our first stop today was at Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Parks. The colors of the Painted Desert were as beautiful as ever and the drive through Petrified Forest was prettier than we remembered. We stopped in Holbrook, AZ, at the rock store to buy a bit of petrified wood for Sean. At Flagstaff we finally left I-40 and drove north on Hwy 89 to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. We set up camp at Bonita Campground in Coconino National Forest, which is right across the road from the Sunset Crater Volcano visitor center. After stopping at the visitor center for a postcard and park stamps, we drove through the park. Sean ... read more

Spent some time on Route 66 , something I've always imagined myself doing. Well , actually it should have been in a vintage Corvette, Kathy was great, putting up with my obsession. Taking tons of pics and never once saying no way, when I mentioned we should stop and look. Interesting Eagles anecdote. According to Aggie, the group stopped in Holbrook to research the song and use the corner at their restaurant as the backdrop. It could have been "Standing on a corner in Holbrook Arizona." Apparently the High School librarian was busy so they continued to Winslow and the rest is , well history. So I stood on the corner he suggested they were going to use! We took a number of pics in Winslow, they have The Corner set up with a flatbed Ford ... read more

Running around the land, looking for my spirit - "Where am I?" I went to Mesa Verde on the way to the Four Corners. There were ruins from about 1200 A.D. People would climb the vertical cliffs to bring food up to their living quarters. They made sacred temples for the sun and for fire. They were created with brick and I can just imagine the people scaling up and down with pure strength and necessity. After I left Mesa Verde, I was not sure where to go. I knew I wanted to go to the Four Corners, so I did. The thing was, I felt like I was maybe supposed to have been there a day earlier. The land was beautiful though, and standing on top of the four corners plaque made me feel like ... read more

Rob Writes: Today saw an early start as the time had come to hit the road. We packed our bags and enjoyed a light buffet (buff what?) breakfast at the Spice Market Buffet in our hotel before checking out. Next we headed to the lobby to catch a cab which would take us to collect our hire car. As many may know, I like driving, both leisurely and otherwise, so needless to say I was excited. I was also a little apprehensive (read shitting my pants). Since our arrival, I had attempted to take in as much as possible with regard to driving in the US, but there isn’t much to learn from the passenger seat of a taxi or my observation point from the side-walk. I figured I would pick it up on the job. ... read more
