The early New Mexican sun continued to encroach upon my slumber through Saturday morning, even in Arizona, waking me around 5 a.m. ( 7 a.m. Oklahoma time). We were road ready having packed, hooked, and secured everything on Friday night. My only task was to disconnect the utilities and head west. For some reason, when I was planning this trip, I seemed to have been convinced that each of my planned overnight stops were reasonable driving distances apart. As it turns out, Holbrook and the Meteor Crater Park were actually situated only two hours apart. This resulted in an “extra day” available for a side trip. The first stop outside of Holbrook is an unassuming small town by the name of Winslow. For those Eagle fans, this should cause you to break into song - “I ... read more

THE BASICS We left the Palm Springs area and drove to the southern end of Joshua Tree NP. We spent the night on BLM land there, and the next night in Quartzite. Then on to my brother Johnny and his wife Katy's home in Phoenix, where we enjoyed a very nice visit. We stayed at a resort north of Phoenix briefly, then headed on to Sedona. Sedona is unbelievably gorgeous, and we enjoyed walks and meals there. And finally through Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff, and yesterday we drove the car to the Grand Canyon. We are having so many #10 days of clear, bright, sunny skies - we feel very lucky. THE FLUFF The joshua trees are in the northern section of JTNP, and we saw them last week. Otherwise, the southern end did not ... read more

Not many pictures today, except for a quick ride up to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument while Rick & Bill toured the Grand Canyon, I just relaxed at the motel. Bill and Rick rode directly from Henderson to Flagstaff because they planned on seeing the Grand Canyon the next day while I got my oil changed. I stopped at the Grand Canyon on my way to Flagstaff to get a stamp, coffee cup, and postcards. And take a couple of pictures. I ended up staying several hours and took hundreds of pictures. I was fortunate to be there while the sun set; it was one of the the most spectacular experiences I have ever had. I will try to describe it better when I write my blog, hopefully today after I get an oil change. Another 12 hour day - over 300 miles. https://picasaweb.google.com/103671248113620284938/Day26?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCJi1lZ2xsN2LrwE&feat=directlink... read more

We woke up to a beautiful, cool sunny day. Ken made lattes for everyone. We didn’t cook a big breakfast. Ken had fruit, I had my waffle, Larry and Henna made a sausage sandwich. After showers, we headed in to Flagstaff. I need to sign some contracts, paperwork for my new job. As we drive through Flagstaff, we notice how much it has grown up. We had driven through Flagstaff a few years ago, but didn’t stop for anything. The guys dropped Henna and I off at Office Max and went to get gas. I got everything accomplished, the guys showed up and we headed back through Flagstaff. Ken wanted to stop for lunch at an Irish Pub he spotted. We found a parking spot and walked to the Pub. We each split Fish and Chips ... read more

Set the alarm for 6:30 am. Got up, had coffee, OJ and yes waffles. We took showers, packed up and hit the road. Driving the 40 E towards Flagstaff. It's mostly desert. The most exciting part is crossing the Colorado in Needles, CA into AZ. Just listening to tunes, singing along at times, making a grocery list. We stopped in Kingman We arrived at Dairy Springs Campground about 4pm. Its 20 miles southeast of Flagstaff. You take Lake Mary Road, which is so pretty. It goes along Lake Mary, past meadows, pine trees and beautiful yellow wild flowers. The town of Flagstaff is crowded with college students. School must be starting on Monday at Northern Arizona University. It’s nice to see Larry and Henna. They have picked out a beautiful campsite. It sits amongst tall pines, ... read more
