We decided to splash out and hire a car for the day to visit the nearby town of Sedona and the red rock formations that surround it. They were very spectacular. We drove on down to a place called Jerome in the hills, an old mining town which retains its historic feel. Drove back through Oak Creek Canyon, yet more amazing views. Then a mad dash across the flat plains east of Flagstaff to the giant Meteor Crater at Winslow. This is the largest and best preserved crater of its kind, however it still cost $15 to see a big hole in the ground and only I went in.... read more

Spent the morning wandering round beautiful Flagstaff, a quaint town with real character. The weather was fine but really cold, and being the intrepid travellers that we are, we went to bed for an afternoon nap to escape the cold (and sleep off a mild hangover from the previous night).... read more

We had a lazy day using the free internet courtesy of the University Of Northern Arizona, an excellent campus, definitely a place that looks cool to study. That evening we met up with some new roomies in our 8 bed dorm which we had all to ourselves the previous day. We also met a few other people in the hostel, including a crazy scottish guy, also called Paul, who had visited the hostel and the area many times. We all shared a few beers in the hostel's TV room, although we got a little rowdy and were told to keep the noise down or go outside, at which point a few people went outside for a cigarette. The next thing we know, there are 3 police cars in front of the hostel and one of the ... read more

A lazy morning, checked out of the motel and checked in to the train to Flagstaff. We mooched around town a bit more until 4pm when we boarded the train. Just around the corner from the train station in Flagstaff we came across the Grand Canyon International Hostel, possibly the best hostel we have stayed in so far, a very cosy and welcoming environment.... read more

In a break from the craziness of LA we have journeyed to Flagstaff Arizona. Its a small town here and things seem quite sedate. I have got a cold at the moment and it was so bad Tuesday morning that i was shivering and wondering if i had the flu, I almost stayed in LA and would have just layed in bed instead of travelling out here. Still Im glad i came because it makes me think that if and when i come to the USA again it will be worth going to some smaller less travelled places. One place i have in mind is Des Moines, Iowa, mainly because it will be a gateway to Mount Rushmore, one of the countless US attractions that i havn't managed to see on this trip. The main reason ... read more

The title is in inverted commas because it is a section in a book i read about travelling the world. This book advises that solo travelling is better and that when you travel with somebody it does not matter how close friends you are that you will argue. I guess i didn't always take note of the latter part of this because, Elaine and i have had some arguments, still it seems as though we have been able to work through them and that we will be able to continue this trip together. Its kinda hard for me to go into detail here about what they have been about, but i really believe that we won't have any further arguments and that the rest of the trip will go smoothly. Still, i didn't believe we would ... read more
