We woke up to a beautiful, cool sunny day. Ken made lattes for everyone. We didn’t cook a big breakfast. Ken had fruit, I had my waffle, Larry and Henna made a sausage sandwich.
After showers, we headed in to Flagstaff. I need to sign some contracts, paperwork for my new job. As we drive through Flagstaff, we notice how much it has grown up. We had driven through Flagstaff a few years ago, but didn’t stop for anything. The guys dropped Henna and I off at Office Max and went to get gas. I got everything accomplished, the guys showed up and we headed back through Flagstaff. Ken wanted to stop for lunch at an Irish Pub he spotted. We found a parking spot and walked to the Pub. We each split Fish and Chips and ordered a beer. It was delicious. Larry and Henna were asking what Ken was going to do in Atlanta. He said he was thinking about starting up his garage band again. Keep in mind; I’ve never seen any of this so called secret talent. He assures me that he and his neighborhood friends had a following back in high school. OK.
We
then walked around the town. It’s very ‘hippyfied’ but that makes for some interesting shops. I found a nice shirt, scarf for me and headbands for the girls. We also found a funky shop with tons of T-Shirts and signs. We got Jason a “Big Lebowski” T-shirt. Henna bought Kenny a funny sign (see picture). Afterwards we stopped at Safeway and then went back to our campground. Henna went to her RV to read, I did the same in mine….hoping I may fall asleep for a bit, but didn’t. Larry and Ken watched baseball on TV.
I put the pork loins in a marinade, soaked the corn on the cob and went over to see what Henna was doing. We opened some wine and sat outside. The guys tried to start a fire. They had asked Henna and I if we wanted a fire while we were in town and we said no. If we had said yes, Ken would have bought some charcoal, a good way to get a sustainable fire when the wood is green and/or wet. So, they tried many ‘tricks’: diesel fuel, gasoline, pine needles and then Larry brought out a fan, plugged it in
and this actually worked the best. By then Henna and I had given up and went inside our RV and started cooking the potatoes. We set the table, talked, listened to music. I already am thinking about saying goodbye tomorrow. I will not see her until October. When we are back in Tucson at the end of September, she will be in Boulder, Colorado with her grandchildren.
We had a delicious dinner: grilled pork tenderloin, grilled corn on the cob and home fries. We ate by candlelight. Afterwards we took a walk by flashlight.
Ken and I washed the dishes, then joined Larry and Henna to watch some TV. We watched an Alaskan Reality show that didn’t seem very real. We said goodnight. I read for a while. I’m reading “What the Nanny Saw” by Fiona Neill. It’s OK, not great.
