Walnut Canyon
Cliff dwellings - - look closely at the center of photo Day 35: Grand Canyon to Flagstaff, AZ
Today we had to leave the Grand Canyon for new places. Kerry and Charlie had already been to the three parks we planned to see today, so they went back through GC Village and south to Flagstaff out the south entrance, while we left by the east entrance and headed to Wupatki NM, Sunset Crater NM, and Walnut Canyon NM. We stopped at all three visitors centers, walked through the ruins at Wupatki, saw Sunset Crater and its lava flows and cinder mounds, and the ruins of the Walnut Canyon cliff dwellings and still got to the campground by 1 PM. This campground is like a parking lot, not particularly level, noisy (busy highways all around), and the restrooms that look like they have NEVER been cleaned (they are shared with the restaurant that is on the property). Surprisingly, the campground is pretty full, though most of the occupants seem to be full time residents.
