When I set up the trip from Seward to Kenai Fjord National Park, the boat was to leave at 11:30 in the morning. Seward is located about 120 miles from Anchorage. But there is, like many places in northern countries, two main seasons on roads: winter and construction. It is supposed to be about a 2 and a half hour drive from Anchorage to Seward. The women in the tour off in Anchorage told me to give myself a minimum of 4 and a half hours to account for the major construction areas on the road between the two cities. They had been hearing stories of 30 minute delays in some places. This caused me some panic. I would have to be leaving around 7 o'clock in the morning. I set my six alarms again and ... read more

Today we planned on just relaxing. We slept in a bit, enjoyed a leisurely breakfast, toured the town in the car and took a boat ride. What we really wanted was helicopter tour of a glacier but most of the tour companies were closed for the season. The boat ride was amazing. We mostly toured Redemption bay which included two major, named glaciers. We saw bald eagles, sea lions, an otter, a mountain goat and many birds. It was both relaxing and informative. We took a lot of pictures and video. The best thing is, we really feel like we did take it easy today. ... read more

There was ice on the truck’s windshield when we left the motel. Boy was it cold. Hardly surprising after the icy night we experienced over night. We set off early. Glennallen was a way point not a destination, even though it won its place in our hearts as a destination. We hit the road at about 9:00 am. This time we saw a bunch of glaciers. We made frequent stops along the way to take pictures. Things got a little hairy though at about 10:30. We needed gas bad and there had been only one gas station so far and its price had been a full $1 higher than we were used to paying. We wished we had as Dan used the hills to good advantage to conserve on gas as we kept a sharp eye ... read more

Thursday night -Anchorage. Friday - quick walk to check out the Byron glacier and ice cave, hiking exit glacier/harding icefield (3,000 ft 8 miles round trip), starting in rainforest, then wildflowers, moving to tundra, and finally near arctic conditions, surprisingly many Asian tourists in dresses??, difficult hike for so many people, at the end the cutest little ermine/weasel played peek-a-boo with us as we photographed it, the little guy ran in and out of the rocks popping up right next to our shoes. Saturday - sore legs, begin drive to Whittier, run to our car because we are nowhere near it and cars are now driving into the 2 mile tunnel, kayak among bald eagles, salmon runs (Pinks I think), see thousands of Kittiwakes nesting between 2 waterfalls (they need the algae that only grows in ... read more

July 27-28, 2011 SEWARD, AK Rugged, snowcapped peaks in a landscape that includes alpine valleys, blue glaciers and the deep waters of Resurrection Bay encircle Seward. This is the gateway city of Kenai Fjords National Park and has some of the most stunning scenery in Alaska. Once again we were able to view blue glaciers close up. Not far from our campground was Exit glacier where you could take a short hike right up to the glacier ice. Our second day started off with a visit to the Alaska Sea-Life Center and aquarium featuring displays of the marine life found in the Gulf of Alaska. Then we strolled around the small township of Seward which has retained many of its original turn-of-the-century buildings. You will notice in the pictures a children’s playground and skate-board park in ... read more

The Alaska Marine Highway ferry ride was great. After driving onto the ferry, we just relaxed and watched the scenery go by as the Captain did the driving, no bad roads, no loose gravel, no construction, no pilot cars. At one spot, several orcas had gathered and were jumping around. The captain turned the boat in a circle around them so all the passengers could get a great view. I got one great photo of a baby orca breeching. As we pulled into Whittier, more glaciers, more beautiful waterfalls. Off the boat and onto the road toward the TUNNEL. We were quite fortunate; we got there when our side got the green light to proceed. Proceeding into the dark and damp tunnel while driving on train tracks felt ominous. After 2.5 miles, the light at the ... read more

Day 6-Monday, July 11, 2011 We decided to stay in Seward for the day. We went shopping and of course, with this being the first day on the road, we had to learn how to run everything in the motor home. This included, leveling the RV, running the TV, water, heat etc. We actually resorted to reading the instruction manual, very unmanly. No Collins would ever do it until they had thoroughly screwed things up. A big treat was going to the Alaskan Sealife Center in Seward. What a great facility for learning and viewing the sea life of Alaska. We loved the Seller Sea Lions. Donna and I bought some nice jackets. Also, they have a mountain race on July 4th. The course up and down the mountain is unbelievable. See the picture. ... read more

Day 5 Sunday, July 10, 2011 We picked up the motor home at Great Alaskan Holidays and then stopped and did our shopping. I thought $330.00 is a lot of money, but then it is for 10 days for 4 people, not too bad. We drove south down the Kenai and stopped at Girdwood for lunch. We made a little lunch and then I tried to cut off my fingers. After a little ER, we were on our way to the town of Hope, made famous by the gold rush. There were the twin towns of Hope & Sunrise, but Sunrise is gone and Hope remains, no analogy intended. We then decided to camp in Seward, about 75 miles south of Hope. The first campground was straight out of deliverance, but the second had great mountain ... read more

We took a bus all the way down from Denali to Seward. It was a full day on the bus with some scenic stops. Smokey the Bear is still an icon up here. He’s a little worn out from all the tourist photos (I got mine!) but he’s as cute as ever. We were glad to board the boat and have a nice meal. Yes of course I opted for crab legs. Our waiter came around taking desert orders, but what I really wanted was more crab legs. Riding in a bus sure builds up an appetite. I guess it’s all the lack of exercise and stale air. Anyway, my extra legs were brought with much fan fare, not just by our waiter, but also by the dining manager. I’m now the crab lady. I’m not ... read more

Seward, Alaska, 27 juin.
