yesterday at about 3 or so in the afternoonwe arrived here in Seward. our campsite is great it is right on the water. later yesterday night my two brothers and dad went deep sea fishing and caught 7 fish for us to eat. but since fishing isn't really my mom and I's thingwe went kayaking with a tour guide and two other people to this place which was basicly like a little beach (thats like in the middle of nowhere) where we then hiked for like a minute to an awesome water fall. any way that was a lot of fun. tonight we are going to this fish potluck which is hosted by the campground.... read more

So the day started as overcast and drizzle, not a great day for a wildlife cruise but kids didn't seem to care. They were only thinking of the wildlife we might see. We got on the boat, an early cruise at 9a.m and our caption met us at the gangplank, a short, balding heavy set man with a hook for a hand. He started right in with the 3 kids and had us already laughing. The air was cold seas were a little “rollie” as our captain put it so we stayed inside but then he'd see something and all of us would shoot out the door onto the deck. There were only about 20 people in the entire party so we could all scramble out quickly. We did see a couple of humpback whales initially ... read more

We headed back up the Sterling Highway, watching the eagles swoop across the road in front of us. We hadn’t gone very far when Gena pulled over after spotting a big moose. We managed to get a couple of pictures before it ambled off. We stopped at Sterling because we wanted to browse the Alaska Horn and Antler shop we had seen yesterday. They had moose, caribou and elk antlers as well as other types of animal horns, tusks and whale baleen. Some were whole, some were pieces and some were carved with intricate patterns. It was quite a fascinating place. At Moose Pass we turned south on Seward Highway to the town of Seward. There we checked into Seward Resort, the military campground. After setting up the campers and eating lunch, we drove over to ... read more

It was cold this morning (38 Degrees). It warmed up pretty quickly and turned out to be a very pleasant day. We broke camp and drove north on the Stirling Hwy. South of Soldotna we saw a large bull moose in the road right of way. He was looking directly at us so all we got was head on photos. Saw a bunch of eagles but didn't get a single photo. We stopped in Sterling at an Antler Shop that sold antlers and carved antlers and other neat stuff. Gena bought a chunk of Moose antler carved with an eagle's head - - really neat. Arrived at the Army Resort in Seward and was able to get two spaces side by side. The spaces are really narrow, so the neighbors are literally about 4 ft away. ... read more

After yesterday’s glorious outing in Hubbard Glacier, the weather gods pay us back with a rainy, overcast day in Seward. It’s the end of the road for some cruisers as the first segment of our url=http://myitchytravelfeet.com/2009/09/09/cruising-vancouver-to-singapore-regent-seven-seas-mariner/ Vancouver to Singpoare cruise ends. But, it’s just the beginning for another round of new guests. Alan and I look forward to catching up with our cruise friends, Jack and Sue, who are joining us for the Seward to Osaka portion of this adventure. Since Regent has not offered any excursions, I catch up on writing assignments while Alan walks the dock in the rain. Later, we learn that other cruisers rented cars for a wet drive out of town to view mountain scenery. The weather clears ... read more

To catch people up to speed who might be reading this and not know what has been happening in my life this past year there might be a surprising picture or two! Have fun, we sure are! This weekend Mark and I got to go to Seward and stay at the Seward Bayfront Cottage. A most wonderful vacation rental owned by Robin & Michael. It is right on Resurrection Bay, within walking distance from the Sea Life Center and downtown Seward. We drove down on Saturday arriving sometime just after noon. The beautiful fall yellows and greens were out, along with a fireweed or two giving us some reds. On the way we stopped at Shari Henkelman’s memorial, Mile 54. It will almost be three years now... At the base of the memorial is a Tab ... read more

It rained hard last night but by morning it had stopped and it stayed dry all day, so I was able to log another rain-free day! It's getting cooler and breezier; fall is definitely in the air. Today I reached the end of the road in Seward and the end of the road for the first half of my trip. I drove to the southern tip of Seward which is the furthest point I will be from home via highways. I've now driven more than 3000 miles in the Miata and traveled another 480 miles on the Inland Passage ferry. Tomorrow I start the long journey home and to do that I need to drive north for two days before I can start heading east and then south. After driving north for two days I'll be ... read more

Well, it finally started raining, but before it did (at 3:00 pm) I managed to complete a great hike and drive most of the way to Seward. I'm going to call it a "mostly non-rainy day". To get to Seward I had to drive through Anchorage again this morning. Just east of Anchorage I took a little detour to Flattop Mountain and went hiking to the top. Flattop Mountain has an elevation of 3510 feet with an elevation gain of 1280 feet from the trailhead (that's a pretty hefty gain for a trail that's only about two miles long!). Yesterday at the bike rental shop I overheard two guys talking about their regular "runs" from the trailhead to the top of Flattop Mountain. One guy said he could do it in 25 minutes and the second ... read more
