To catch people up to speed who might be reading this and not know what has been happening in my life this past year there might be a surprising picture or two! Have fun, we sure are!
This weekend Mark and I got to go to Seward and stay at the
Seward Bayfront Cottage. A most wonderful vacation rental owned by Robin & Michael. It is right on Resurrection Bay, within walking distance from the Sea Life Center and downtown Seward.
We drove down on Saturday arriving sometime just after noon. The beautiful fall yellows and greens were out, along with a fireweed or two giving us some reds.
On the way we stopped at Shari Henkelman’s memorial, Mile 54. It will almost be three years now... At the base of the memorial is a Tab can, Shari’s favorite soda.
Back on the road in the drizzle, we headed south. Some where along the way we began to see signs that warned us of bicyclists on the road. Much later we finally saw a soggy bicyclist or two. Some time after that we saw more of them and could identify the race tags on their backs or bikes or
fronts or wherever they had them. Much, much later, when we got to the Sea Life Center, we found out this was a ride for MS. Although bedraggled, we thought they were having a good time.
We arrived at the Cottage, unloaded the car and settled in. The weather did not dampen our exploring spirit and we donned rain jackets and headed to wander the streets of Seward. Mark was impressed at the Tsunami evacuation routes signs. After getting some coffee to warm up we proceeded to play tourist and go in almost every shop on the street. Our favorite, on Saturday, was The Ranting Raven. An eclectic mix of art, jewelry, clothing, espresso and a bakery.
Dinner was back in the cottage watching “The Princess Bride.” A very relaxing evening.
Sunday dawned bright and early… well it would have if the sun had come out! Despite the threat of rain, we decided on an excursion to the waterfront. We ate halibut chunks and chips at the Breeze Inn, probably the best in Alaska! To walk off our meal we strolled about looking at the shops and at the many interesting boats in the harbor. Quite a
few were for sale if you had $200,000 or more to spare! We don’t.
On the way back to the cottage we stopped at our favorite store,
Softly Silk. Run by Kerri Cline, a New Zealander. She is an artist who does the most beautiful paintings on silk. She also paints on canvas and does watercolors. Browsing through her store was indeed a wonderful treat.
We decided to head out to Caine’s Head road and Lowell Point Park. Although the road was full of potholes of varying size, it was well worth the ride. Waterfalls, otters, and beautiful scenery made up for the bumpy road.
Before going back to the Cottage to pack up we stopped at The Ranting Raven to have a cup of coffee and share one of their tasty homemade cinnamon rolls. We tidied up the Cottage and headed back to Anchorage in the evening. On the road we reminisced about the wonderful time we had and planned our next mini-vacation!
