August 18th, Wed Looking out the airplane window, all I saw was beauty; so I was already in high anticipation of beauty sensory overload! The city of Anchorage then was a huge disappointment since it looked like any city in the U.S, Walmart and all. We headed for Abbey’s home in Seward and left Anchorage city limits, I got excited - Yes, I’m definitely in Alaska! Beautiful. It reminded me of the day after my cataract operation, the bandage came off and I saw glorious color, never realizing how my cataract had gradually dulled my vision. In the same way, the mountains I look at every day in California are wonderful, but these mountains seem clocked in finer greens, with gorgeous blue tinted glaciers and an exciting blue sky with fat white clouds. No smog! As ... read more

seward is not a destination, rather, a way point on our journey ... guess that is true about every day of life ... seward is, however, where two of my grandchildren are working for the summer, they are overextended with work so we will have limited time with them ... we and they both understood that as a condition of my coming to alaska ... the last few days greg and i have been without wi-fi, camping at provincial parks, or in protected places ... one night we camped on a gravel bar below the matanuska glacier ... no wi-fi there ... just solitude in a setting of snowcapped mountains and a rushing glacial river ... benjamin's and abbey's boat came in early because of rough water ... greg and i had intended to arrive at ... read more

Geo: 60.1042, -149.442 Sunday, 8/1/2010 – Drove back to Kenai Fjords NP for our hike to the Harding Ice Field. This was about a 9.0 mile round trip hike with an elevation gain of some 3,000 feet. This was one of the two most difficult hikes we did on this trip but well worth the effort. The actual ice field trail is only 3.7 miles, one way, but you have to hike an initial 0.8 miles on the glacier view trail from the visitor center to get to the main trail head. The trail itself is well designed so that there are only a few extended steep climbs. In most cases, the areas with steep climbs are relatively short with flat or gradual climbs in-between for you to catch your breath. However, those longer steep climbs ... read more

Geo: 60.1042, -149.442Saturday, 7/31/2010 – The weather so far had been very nice. A little overcast from time to time but no rain. That changed this morning. Foggy and misty rain for most of the day. We were up early and availed ourselves of the B&B's breakfast. Pretty standard free breakfast offered by most chain motels these days but not terrible – cold cereal, bagels w/cream cheese, etc., boiled eggs, fruit, etc. We were catching the ferry from Valdez to Whittier that left at 8:00 AM. We got in line to board the ferry at 7:00 and were loaded promptly. Ferry was not crowded at all which was a bit surprising to us. We had hoped to see some marine life and get a view of Columbia Glacier from the ferry, but that was not to ... read more

Well, today we drove to Seward. We stopped at a ranger information center and found out about a side road that went farther into the wilds and might have a better chance of wildlife. At the beginning of the Skilak Road, we dropped off the trailer because it was a dirt road and full of potholes. It was a beautiful drive, mostly in the rain, with lovely lakes and some overlooks, when we could see them. Nancy identified some new wildflowers and a Pacific loon. Alas, no large animals. (We’re not complaining.) We hooked up the trailer and went on. The drive was beautiful and Seward is another lovely town on a bay surrounded by high snowy mountains like Whittier and Homer. Our campground was a little ways out of town, so we set up, unhooked, ... read more

Seward was awesome! It’s a really nice town. Seward is pretty small but it is right next to the ocean which is pretty cool. We stayed at a RV park in a little place called Miller’s Landing. The first night we were there we went deep sea fishing for salmon and other fish. We went from 5 to 9pm. The weird part was that only one person caught a salmon. Everyone else caught black bass and snappers. I caught two black bass. Blaze also caught two black bass and dad caught three black bass. I sure hope black bass taste good because first of all, they were really heavy and hard to bring up because they were huge fish and we caught them at like three hundred feet down in the water. Second of all, I ... read more

We arrived yesterday to Seward which is on the Kenai Peninsula. It must be the most beautiful place in the world; mountains everywhere, glaciers, waterfalls, Resurrection Bay, creeks, wildlife, spruce trees. It is like combining the best of Oregon and Colorado and adding steroids. Jaden and I challenged ourselves with a four hour sea kayak tour from 7-11 pm while Kevin, Dax and Blaze went on a deep sea fishing trip. We had a beautiful, yet strenuous paddle out to Bridal Veil Falls. We saw many sea otters, some about 25 yards away. Our campground is on the beach front with magnificent views. ... read more
