Now I know how the old man in the nursery rhyme felt about the rain leaking throgh his roof. We made our way to Seward, AK. We lucked out and got a waterfront camping sight, and that was the last of our views. It was lightly drizzling when we got there. Followed by a downpour that lasted almost 20 hours before we left. Now mind you, it was still pouring when we left and probably still is. The roof leaked something terrible! So we canceled our tour boat and high tailed it out of town. It seemed like as soon as we hit the town limits, the rain stopped. We headed over to the Kenai and just laid low for a couple of days. We of course played cards last night. It is uncanny how much ... read more

...until today. DAY 4 We woke up this morning after another good night’s sleep (about 9 hours worth!) , deciding it was best not to shower until AFTER our hike (it had been 2 days since we’d each taken a full shower). Keep in mind that we are staying in a town full of fisherman and “hippie” outdoorsy people. So, we showed up to the Exit Glacier Guides building (an old train car in an area called “The Train Wreck”) at 9 am in our layers of clothing - though I had on two fewer layers than the day before, which would later prove to be a good idea. When we arrived, we were greeted by our guide, Ryan. He fitted us with crampons (spikes you put on the bottom or your shoes so you can ... read more

DAY 3 We woke up this morning in room 3 of Bear Paw Lodge after a good night's sleep, thanks to the white noise mp3 we bought from iTunes and the blanket we put over the window (it's not 24 hours of sunlight down here, but it never really gets quite dark - I think the sun sets around 11:30 pm and rises around 4:30 am). We had no idea that it was going to be, but a continental breakfast was provided for us - all set up on the kitchen table. I got a cup of coffee and headed back to the room to try to figure out what the heck I was going to wear today. What does one wear to paddle through ice water? In the end, I chose a pair of hiking ... read more

After my misadventures and adventures in the Talkeetna area, I headed south to Wasilla to buy a new digital camera. I was told to go to a Ritz store there so I plugged it into the GPS and off I went. I really wanted another Canon because I've been so happy with the one I broke. I couldn't find the store. It was in a strip mall, but I couldn't find it. I ran into a mail man and he pointed to a coffee place and said Ritz was right next to it. When I got there, there was only a toy store. I went inside and the lady told me Ritz closed, but said there's another in Anchorage, another 40 miles away. So off I went to Anchorage. I had been thinking about seeing the ... read more

The second half of our busy week was centered around Seward and the Kenai Fjords. It was an early morning train departure from Anchorage, but this ride was even more scenic than the ride to Denali. We had lost our sunshine though, so everything had that southeast Alaska look to it. In Seward we stayed at the Windsong Lodge, a large yet comfy place several miles out of town. There was a hotel shuttle every hour, so it was easy to get around. We found an excellent coffee shop ("Resurrect Art" converted from an old church) complete with art for sale and reading material. There's also Yolys Bistro in the old downtown on Fourth Street with a Thai cook and great curry soup that comes in a huge bowl. I found a lovely yarn shop (A ... read more

Seward - Ididaride! To support sled dog training all year 'round, Mitch Seavey has set up a camp that offers the public access to eductaion about the Iditarod & interact with his dogs. There's a 15 minute info talk in the beginning, then the tour is broken up into smaller (aprox. 8 - 9 persons) groups that take a ride on the metal dog sleds -- the sleds weigh aprox. 1 thousand pounds fully loaded. They run the dogs around a short (3 - 5 miles??) track pulling the sled behind them, taking quite a few breaks since it's so much warmer than in the actually race run in February. Simply amazing how strong the team is! After the ride, it's time for "Puppy Interaction"! Everyone gets to hold the cute cuddly puppies... Mamma dog is ... read more

“What the heck is that?’ Dave asked upon awakening this morning. The sun was actually out and we had some blue sky mixed with the low lying gray clouds. With no reservations for a tour, we headed down to the docks first thing and booked an 8 hour tour of the Kenai Fjords National Park on the Major Marine Line. Our next stop was the Alaska Sea Life Center. There are lots of interactive exhibits, but the fun part was the live sea life pools. In the seabird habitat we saw puffins and red-legged kittiwakes. A Stellar Sea Lion swimming underwater and harbor seals above entertained the crowd. We also saw deep sea fish, jellies. Crabs, an octopus and so much more Once at the dock for our 11:45 am sailing, we were greeted by the ... read more

Damp cool weather continues, with strong winds blowing off the water and low clouds hanging over the mountains. We left Homer and drove back through Soldotna and stopped at Fred Meyers for a repair kit for the tent. We have a small hole in the boot that goes around the hatch. The scenery today was mountains and clouds dampened with showers. We arrived in Seward, which we found to be a quaint port town. There was a cruise ship at the docks and lots of other boats including site-seeing boats that take you to see wildlife and glaciers. We had lunch in town and then spoke to a ranger at the National Parks Office about seeing Kenai National Park. We have been trying to determine if we want to take a boat out of Seward or ... read more

We didn’t spend much time hanging out at the cabin this morning (what else would you expect). I had read about an International Coastal Cleanup Day that was being organized out of the Alaska SeaLife Center. We were ready to help out in exchange for free admission to the Center. We went to the front desk to find out what we could do to help… Not only did no one at the front desk not know about it, but no one on staff knew about it. It was actually pretty comical to hear the staff radioing back and forth trying to figure it out. In the end, they told us that we were comped for admission (wow, a savings of $42) and they didn’t know what else to do for the cleanup… We spent a couple ... read more
