Day 28 Tuesday August 13 Homer to Seward 175 Miles We woke up to this glorious sunrise streaming into our front window, but there was a shroud of clouds covering the entire range of mountains. It was eerie to think that the mountains were hidden just behind them. Before we left, the veil was lowering and we could see the tops of the mountains for the last time on the spit. We retraced our path up to Kenai and headed east, then picked up Alaska Highway 9 at Tern Lake Junction. We pulled into the City of Seward Parks and Recreation Caravan Camping area around 2:15. We are right on the water at the Seward area of Cook Inlet. We had friends over for fresh halibut that they caught yesterday. Then took a walk down the ... read more

Geo: 60.1042, -149.442 We left our great little motel in Homer under cloudy skies and balmy temperatures for our third day on the Kenai Peninsula and retraced our route along the Sterling Highway 1. Along the way we had one quick moose sighting near Kenai Lake. Riding along Steward Highway 9 we made our way over Moose Pass as the cloud cover gave way to patches of blue skies and the temperature began to rise. Just outside of Seward we entered the Kenai Fjords National Park for a visit to the Exit Glacier. The approach to the ice field along Resurrection River under clear skies was stunning. We hiked to the base of the glacier where the runoff from melting ice created the river. After sharing our lunch with flies and mosquitoes, we headed into Seward(the ... read more

A hike up to Exit glacier was what we did this afternoon. It was an easy hike to the lower level, but the ranger said if we wanted to get up close to the glacier it would be a much harder hike. Joyce and I decided we would let the guys and Carolyn do that hike. We figured we could look at the pictures they took. We were glad we stayed down below since they all said the hike was pretty rough towards the end. It was sad to see how much the glacier has rescinded over the years.... read more

Today we went to the Alaska SeaLife Center. It is a wonderful place to learn all about the oceanic life here in Alaska. We then went to the library to watch a film about the big 1964 earthquake. It was a record 9.4 on the scale. Between the fires from the refinery plants and the tidal waves Seward was totally destroyed. It took over 4 years to rebuild the city. Amazingly on 12 people were killed. We had some dinner back at our rigs then played a new card game we learned. Nice day.... read more

We traveled a whooping 99 miles today from Kenai to Seward. The scenery was spectacular and the roads were even pretty good. We headed into town to confirm our plans for tomorrow and check out the harbor. What a beautiful place the harbor is. Boats of all kinds everywhere!... read more

We've had two more amazing days since last I wrote. Yesterday we took a 9 hour boat tour from the Kenai Fjords Company of the waters around Seward, Resurrection Bay through the Northwestern Fjords. To say it was incredible is an understatement. The weather was, as it has been until tonight, chilly and rainy. The captain assured us that while people don't like that kind of weather it would be great for seeing wildlife, and it was. We weren't out on the boat 20 minutes when 3 porpoises swam right by us and within a half hour, we saw our first humpback whale! And we saw 3 more during the day...and dozens stellar sea lions, harbor seals, puffins (!), and an amazing array of birds, my favorite being the common murr, a bird that looks like ... read more

I got behind a day with blogging. I'm not sure why but I can't seem to just blog the highlights. Since I've started this thing I've gotten hooked on not missing writing about a day of travels. So...After another great breakfast and a quick shopping trip to buy rain jackets (yes, Barry and I now have matching black/grey Alaska jackets!) we loaded the car and headed out of Anchorage. We were all very ready to see what this state really looks like. Between Lonely Planet and Fodor's, Marcy and I had planned lots of stops along the way and what could have been a 2.5 hour drive from Anchorage to Seward actually took us 9 hours but it was awesome. We stopped at Potter's Marsh and saw a bald eagle in a tree along with other ... read more

Included at least a few of the pictures today. I hiked to Exit Glacier even though it was raining. I was just going to go to the Outwash in front of the glacier but then could not keep from going the extra distance to the viewpoint right at the Glacier. I stopped at taking the 8 miles all the way up. It was a great hike and beautiful to stand there even in the rain and listen to the water rushing about and just enjoy the spectacle. The trails were outlined well and at least periodically I was reminded there were other people out and about amidst the trails. Afterward I investigated some other park like areas but the glacier hike was the highlight of the day. There's quite a bit already closed. Even the National ... read more

Just letting folks know I arrived in Seward safe and sound and planning to be here two nights. The drive was absolutely gorgeous albeit a bit long from Fairbanks - otherwise uneventful as in no problems. Actually had sun off and on all the way here. On arrival here they told me national weather service had now put out another wind/rain warning for the area covering tonight and possibly two days which includes potential flooding due to how saturated everything is already from the recent rains. I have a view of the Bay from the room so it'll be pretty to watch if it turns out too ugly to even go out. Hiking might be out but there's other things so we'll see. Have to expect unknown weather this time of year and I'm so grateful ... read more

We spent the night in Seward, as this was where we were to start or cruise from.. The day before the cruise we had some free time to go to the Seward Aquarium...it does not match Cape Town's Two Ocean's Aquarium! But we did meet a cute seal, everytime we put our hand on the glass he would stop and rub his chin more or less where our hand was before he zoomed off again! That was SO sweet! We also saw a bird which I though was extinct -a Puffin! They are so funny looking! We had amazing weather up untill we got to Seward, suddenly it was misty and overcast but we could still see that Seward was a very pretty little coastal town. With our bags packed and all ready to go we ... read more
