We spent the night in Seward, as this was where we were to start or cruise from.. The day before the cruise we had some free time to go to the Seward Aquarium...it does not match Cape Town's Two Ocean's Aquarium! But we did meet a cute seal, everytime we put our hand on the glass he would stop and rub his chin more or less where our hand was before he zoomed off again! That was SO sweet! We also saw a bird which I though was extinct -a Puffin! They are so funny looking!
We had amazing weather up untill we got to Seward, suddenly it was misty and overcast but we could still see that Seward was a very pretty little coastal town.
With our bags packed and all ready to go we hopedp on board the Celebrity Millenium! A 7 day Inside Passage cruise, ports of call: Hubbard Glacier, Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan and Vancouver Canada.
Ship Facts:
What an amazing vessel, a floating hotel! It has about 1000 staff and 2160 guests onboard.
It weighs more than 91,000 tons, it's 295 meters long and cruises along at 24kts
or 45km ph when it has too...and has 19 restaurants, bars and lounges some with live music, a fitness centre, open air jogging track, beauty spa, accupunture, basketball court, solarium, TABLE TENNIS TABLE ,swimming pools, jacuzis, hairdressers, theater, conference rooms, kiddies fun factory - lucky for us it's not a "family' cruise but more of a "retired" cruise! A variety of different shops and boutiques.. and A casino too- no..no.. we didn't!
Service was excellent - nothing comes close to the service we received- from housekeeping, waiting staff and head of departments, we even received a personal invitation to join the captain at his dinner table! LoL! we politely declined as we already had other reservations..
They also offer shore and land excursions, but we preferred to go at our own pace and enjoy the little towns that we stop at on our own steam and leisure.
Our room was amazing, it was on the 9th deck/floor with a balcony! So spoilt - I know!! and....a room attendant that serviced our room a few times a day so whenever we went out and returned it was as fresh and clean as new! Oh I loved it!!
"STORMY
WEATHER'!!
After we set off, captain made an announcement that we would be experiencing some 'rocking' till early morning as we were heading into a storm!! YIKES!! It wasn't as scary as air turbulance but it was a new experience! IT was hard to fall asleep as the ship was rolling from left to right and then the front going up and down as it was hit by 16ft (almost 5m)waves and 50mph winds (80km)!!... by the next day around 2 in the afternoon I was just about pulling my hair out! Not from seasickness but it was so hard to walk anywhere or do anything.. we walked up the stairs and suddenly as the front of the ship goes over a wave- I became almost weightless and floated up the stairs but as soon as the front went down the wave boy oh boy you suddenly weigh a ton and almost sink to your knees WHILE fighting the left to right rolling!!! But it was fun, not so much scary -I reasoned there are lifeboats just incase, and I think more people can swim than can fly...LoL! AND Nope, none of us 4 got seasick, but we heard
of experienced 'cruisers' and staff that got seasick - that's how bad it was, so I guess us 4 South Africans are made of tough stuff! But late afternoon we were out the storm and for just about the rest of the trip we didn't feel a thing- even forgetting that we were on a ship! That's mostly due to the fact that we were doing the Inside Passage, so we had land on both sides.
Ok.. I think I covered most of day 1...
