Day 8 of our Alaska journey starts with a dose of reality. A cruise ship has been stranded in Ketchikan for several days, and as a result, we will be tendering to shore. There have been several cruise ship mechanical issues in recent months, and this is another on the growing list. However, we tendered to shore, located the visitor center, and completed a walking tour which included three excellent museums and some salmon-watching. The first museum had a focus on the development by settlers who came to the area in the early 1900's. The second museum was more historical and explained the totem pole messages and cultural significance. The third museum was the National Park Service museum. The telescope view into creek street waters was a different perspective than at street level. There were interactive ... read more

Well..the news we knew that was coming...our ship s not able to be repaired. She needs to be taken to Victoria BC to be repaired in the dry dock! Kinda thought this was going to happen! The news came through about 9am this morning. Captain has advised that all guests will be receiving 100 % refund of the fare paid and will receive a voucher for another cruise with Celebrity for the same mount. Looks like we will be back for the summer cruise season 2014. This is the only cruise Geoff and I wanted to do so we won't be giving up this offer! Must say that the staff are all fantastic people. They don't get paid a lot but they always have a smile and are very helpful. We really don't realise how lucky ... read more

Boarding onto the ship went smooth considering we had to go through USA customs and everything. We were very happy with our choice of stateroom on the ship. Room 7003 with a forward facing porthole. No people traffic as we are right at the front of the ship. Spent the afternoon exploring the it's huge. We have never cruised before so this is a whole new experience. The food is much of it everywhere you turn. They serve over 9000 meals a day on this ship. We went to a show this evening at the theatre then dinner at the restaurant. Good service and great food. Next day was a sailing day so we relaxed and watched the view from the deck. Food is so roll into bed every night! We also did ... read more

The next day, our last small town on the cruise was Ketchikan, home to Totem Pole park where replicas of many the lands Totem Poles reside. This struck us a more of tourist gimmick, so we elected to take a nature walk out at one of the hundreds of small islands in the area. We had hoped to see more Bald Eagles and we were not disappointed. The shuttle took a group of about 25 out to a small harbor north of town. We jumped out and into life jackets. As we walked down the gangway, I noticed our boat resembled a large 25 foot, rubber life raft with a center console, and twin 200HP outboard motors. “Strange”, I thought, but this is probably a good way to get around up here from island to island. ... read more

Geo: 55.3542, -131.691Today the ship docked in Ketchikan at around 11 so we took the opporunity to sleep in. We had breakfast at Beach Blanket. After breakfast we went and played a round of Bingo but didnt have any luck at winning although I got to verify that all the numbers were represented and for this I got some lip balm and a hat. Then, Kelsie and I got off the ship so she could get a souvenir. Nikki went to read at Cove Cafe and Regan chilled. We grabbed lunch at the pool deck before heading to our 12:15 meeting for our excursion. We were going to the Tatoosh Islands to kayak. We had a 30 minute bus ride followed by a 20 minute boat ride on Zodiak out to the island to be instructed on how to use ... read more

After nearly a week of fantastic weather, we arrived in Ketchikan and could see that the weather was foul. We made our way to the Lido for breakfast, and again, French Toast seemed to be the preferred choice. Sharon’s blight of chocolate croissants finally came to an end; although there was just one when she first checked the pastry section, I came back with another two after I had finished eating. Sharon’s mom had said she didn’t want one, but after eyeing that one left on the plate, she finally couldn’t resist. She did complain that there was only a paltry amount of chocolate in hers; while, Sharon shrewdly chose the one with the double dose. We were a bit early getting off the Oosterdam for our tour. Before the gangway, they were making sure everyone ... read more

All got a little active during the night. Woke up at 1.30 am and found the ship doing its own little version of the Samba. Probably wasn't particularly rough but after the smooth sailing we've enjoyed so far, doing what old men do several times a night became just that little more challenging and requiring just a little more attention to detail! But with resolute attention to detail managed to avoid embarrassment. Was a little bit concerned as it is not a well kept secret that I am not the worlds best sailor, but as it turned out went straight back to sleep. Another disaster averted. Awoke at 7am and Sandy's first words were 'man the ship was getting thrown around last night'. The fact that it woke Sandy is a testament to the fact that ... read more

We had such a fun day with our trip. Our excursion on the Aleution Ballard started right from our dock, which was nice since it was down pouring. One of our captains was Derrick Ray who took over for a while after Capt. Phil Harris of the Corneila Marie passed away during Season 6 I believe. We headed out to open water and they passed out raingear to those who were in the line of fire with the rain/winds. The captain and crew shared stories of their lives on the crabbing waters of the bering sea. We saw two different kinds of nets pulled up containing king crab and snow crap, similiar to Orphelia crap. We also saw dungeness crab and cod nets pulled on board. What was really neat is they took pictures with everyone ... read more

Ketchikan Another sleepy village nestled between mountain and sea with amazing scenery, somehow I just can’t get enough of the views. Ketchikan is Tlingit Indian for “Thundering Wings of an Eagle” ,that is because the town takes the shape of an eagle in flight when viewed from deer Mountain. We were warned about the “traffic ninjas”, these pedestrian crossing attendants take their job VERY seriously and if anyone should step over the sidewalk before they instructed too they get very upset! I guess it upsets the whole town’s traffic system when a ship or two bring in an extra 3000 people… Shore excursions available were – floatplane or boat to Misty Fjords, flightseeing and I think someone mentioned snorkelling! On board entertainment in theatre “iBroadway” – music from Broadway past and present.. We had the best ... read more

Ketchikan was an interesting town and unique town. The driver to our excursion gave us a brief history of the town. It's the fourth largest town in Alaska with an average population of 13,000 - 14,000. The whole island is 160 miles around with one road throughout the whole town. The road does not connect to loop around the island it just deadends. Most of the town is built on pilings and it rains 300 days a year. The most rain they received in a given year was in 1949 with 202 inches. The fishing industry is pretty large on the island and equates to 1 in 10 jobs. Since Ketchikan is an island the only way to get on and off the island is by boat. The State Ferry is used by islanders to get ... read more
