Click here for photos from Ketchikan We awoke in Ketchikan to what we'd come to consider the sound of Alaska, a cold rain. Even the sound of the rain hitting our balcony told us it was cold, or perhaps our expectations of weather better than we experience back home had slowly turned into acceptance of the damp, cold reality of our current position. Although I often mention how overcast and rainy Northeast Pennsylvania is compared to the rest of the planet, Ketchikan clans claim to have the scientific proof that they have the fourth most rainy city. Upon closer inspection, we're both spreading misinformation. Neither of us appear in the most overcast group eit... read more

This morning we awoke already tied to the pier in Ketchikan Alaska. Well that was the 2ndtime we awoke. At 3:45 the alarm woke us for Janet to go to register for Yoga. And the cliffhanger answer is ….. YES she did get up and try, but NO she was unsuccessful because the class was already filled. So this next couple of months she may find something different to occupy her mornings. Jim and Kathy thought we were meeting them for breakfast at 6:00 and we thought 6:30, so today they went up to the buffet first and we took over using their table after they had finished eating. It was very crowded in the Horizon Court this morning because all the excursions were pretty early in the morning. Naturally everyone wanted to eat before going ... read more

Backpacking in the Inside Passage We now headed to Alaska, dividing the trip into two parts, backpacking and ferry hopping for a month in the Inside Passage then car camping with the same small 2 person tent in the interior. Booking a vehicle on the Alaska Marine Highway is prohibitively expensive. Even bringing bikes would have paid for new bikes by journey’s end. We could have driven the Al Can highway one way and in retrospect, that might have been a good alternative. Much of the Inside Passage is not really oriented for backpackers and it took a few false starts to learn the ropes. Our roughest leg was the first stop, Ketchikan. Flying into Ketchikan at Night We flew into Ketchikan, the first major port for northbound cruises in the Inside Passage, in the evening ... read more

Geo: 55.3542, -131.691Okay, sort of a case of too much of a good thing. We have opted out of today. There were lots of activities around whale watching, fishing and cultural shows but for this short day in port, we decided to do ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING.I know it sounds a waste, but it turned out to be the perfect pace for us.Had a sleep in. Headed to breakfast/lunch right on 11 am so we got the last 30 minutes of the breakfast menu and combined it with the first 30 minutes of the lunch menu.We strolled into town after the tour group rush and had a wander around and went into the backstreets to pick up our wooden totem (our sole souvenir of the trip...no room in luggage for extras).Dinner was at Cagney's and yep, it was ... read more

Sharon rose to take in the breathtaking early dawn view as we neared our port of call in Ketchikan. Just one week earlier we didn’t even venture off of the Noordam in this port due to the inclement weather. Well, the locals refer to it as liquid sunshine, and they monitor the liquid sunshine each year. And they measure what most locales quantify in inches with feet. Their record is just over sixteen feet or 203 inches. The monitor shows that it is possible that will be exceeded this year. The average is between ten and twelve feet per year! We caught a bite to eat in the Lido, with Sharon getting the French Toast which was quite good. The turkey bacon wasn’t quite crisp enough for her, again; although, when I finished it I must ... read more

We awoke, skirting along the coast of Alaska towards Ketchikan, to find dreary inclement weather waiting for us ashore. The revised daily itinerary had pushed our arrival back two hours until noon, and there were a number of morning activities added to the day’s agenda. One was a Team Brain Teaser that we hoped to do well at: We won this challenge with our mother’s in Alaskan waters! Sharon went to mass while I worked on the blog. Later we went to breakfast in the Lido and I had my Swiss Muesli and an eggs Benedict; while, Sharon had her scrambled eggs with turkey bacon and potatoes. Except for the turkey bacon, our breakfasts have been much better this trip in the Lido than in the dining room. The Lido however makes the turkey bacon come ... read more

Geo: 55.3542, -131.691So that there is no unfounded lingering " eager anticipation" here, our lucky numbers did not come up in the onboard Paradise Lotto so Mac's investment of $8 paid no dividends. But, we still had the winning feeling because today was Ketchikan shore day. There were so many adventures and activities to choose from: kayaking, hiking, rope challenges, zip lining, snorkelling, canoeing or sport fishing. All the activities are rated for physicality from Level 2 through to Level 3. For our first foray we chose a Level 1 "Active and Adventure Tour" and "just because" we haven't eaten enough on the ship our adventure was The Wilderness Exploration and Crab Feast. The tour began with a narrated bus tour and our driver and guide was Kevin, a native of the Bear and Raven clan. This ... read more

“HIPCRIME You committed one when you opened this book. Keep it up. It’s our only hope. “ – The Hipcrime Vocab Chad C Mulligan I write this on the very jerky Amtrak Cascade train on the way to Vancouver. That is why my typing is so shaky and misshapen. We leave on a train that runs parallel to the harbour between the city and the foreshore. As we pass I noticed no burghers of Seattle with signs demanding the track be torn up. Seattle has been great but jet lag has put a dampener on our stay here, particularly as we walked so far on that first day. Acclimatising is about more than adjusting to the weather. Some observations about America (based upon a scientific study lasting 5 days) · They tend to like ... read more
