Arrived late in ketchikan- around 10:30. Our excursion for Misty Fjords was cancelled due to bad weather. It was very rocky and foggy. Walked around town a little with Toni, Jack and Ron. they went to the library for the internet and i shopped a little, bought a disposable camera, and back to ship. Cocktail party for silver, gold and platinum. Jorge, F and B manager, got me a bag of rice so i am trying to cure my camera. Had several group pics done by the photographer before we ate. Dinner with the whole gang in Le Bistro and that restaurant will never be the same. The laughs just kept coming and dinner was exquisite. Saw Second City show after that and off to bed. ... read more

Ketchikan was the first port we stopped at on my first Alaskan Cruise in 1986 (yes 25 years ago). That was the trip my first husband Jim and I took for our 10th anniversary. It was a wonderful trip and ranks up there as one of the best trips ever. We had a rare sunny day and everyone in town was in a great mood. We took the Totem Park tour in the morning and a boat trip to the cannery area in the afternoon. Just one of those really nice days you always remember. Our 2nd trip in 1996 we also had good weather and took the Misty Fiords flight on the float plane. We also had time to walk around town this trip and still found it a fairly quiet town though they'd started ... read more

From Herring Cove, where I now reside, the view of Twin Peaks has called for me since my arrival on Revillagigedo Island. There is no established trail to the peaks so getting there requires, bushwhacking, snow traverses and class 5 scrambles.... read more

Tuesday morning, we woke up anchored in Ketchikan. The first stop on our high seas adventure. It’s a small fishing town that relies on tourism for its income. A couple of cruise ships tie up every day and drop the tourists at their door. The two of us, being consummate tourists, signed on to a tour up the road to see eagles soar and salmon run. It also included a stop at the famous Saxman Village Totem Pole Park. Our guide was a great old guy who has lived in Ketchikan since he was 10. Forest is his name and he and his Dad were some of the first loggers in the area. He had some mighty tall tales to tell and he told them all. He worked the pulp mill until it was shut down ... read more

We spent one full morning Halibut fishing near Guard Island with the camp hosts, Jim and Gerry. They lived in Alaska for 30 years and homesteaded 160 acres in Willow, Alaska. We hired a 20-foot boat, which included the rod, reel, tackle and bait (herring); and headed out to Guard Island. I caught and released an "Irish Lord", which is much like a bullhead. Gerry caught a very nice halibut, which we all enjoyed eating the next day. Guard Island is near the entrance to the Tongass Narrows, in Clarence Strait. On the island is a Lighthouse constructed in 1903. The wood used for the Light Station deteriorated in the harsh weather and was reconstructed in 1924. The station was automated by the Coast Guard in 1969. It is believed to be the largest light house ... read more

Got into port at Ketchikan 6:00 AM June 7th. Neat little town, totally inaccesible by road. Touristy, but real, as it is a fishing and canning town. Lucky to be there on a rare sunny day. Took off at 5:00 PM. Next stop Juneau.... read more

Toady, we took a catamaran tour of the 2.1 million-acre Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness Area. Misty Fjords was established in 1980 (Jimmy Carter?) by the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. The wilderness contains three saltwater fjords, waterfalls, granite cliffs, glaciated valleys and active glaciers. There are 150 rustic cabins throught the Tongass Natl forest with several cabins withing the Fjords. These rent for $25-50 per night. They provide wooden bunks to sleep 2-15 people. You have to hike, paddle or hire a charter boat/plane to take you there. It would be a fun way to go, if you didn't want the expense of hauling a car and camper like we did. We began in Ketchikan where HUGE cruise ships dock. These ships carry thousands of people and during peak season bring ... read more
