We arrived in Ketchikan at 7:00 A.M. and had an early breakfast to be ready to disembark for our tour of Ketchikan. Ketchikan snakes for several miles along the southwestern shore of Revillagifedo Island, facing Tongass Narrows. With 14,000 inhabitants, this fourth largest community is known as"Alaska's First City" because it is the first town travelers reach when ferrying north. After having our pictures taken at the gangway with bald eagle and Ketchikan's fisherlady we boarded our tour bus. Driving through the city we saw the Creek Street Historic District (notorious red-light district from1902 to 1954), the salmon cannery, and typical homes of the loggers and other business people of Ketchikan. Then we went to Totem Bight State Park and our guide showed us many totem poles and the reconstructed Clan House. Each totem pole ... read more

I have arrived in Ketchikan, Alaska to another fabulous sunny day. This has been one of the best cities in Alaska so far for wildlife viewing. First off I tendered in to port to look around the city before going on my excursion by boat to see Misty Fjords. I boarded a high speed boat to travel to Misty Fjords. On the way to the Fjords I was able to see Orca Whales, Humpback Whales, Sea Lions, and I got my best picture of a Juvenile Bald Eagle. Bald Eagles heads do not turn white till they are at least 3 or 4 years old. The Misty Fjords were beautiful which are steep valleys carved out by massive glaciers. The water below us in the valley was between 1500 and 1800 feet deep. After the ... read more

Well, bad news. I had a migraine when I woke up that morning and couldn't go into Ketchikan. It's a good thing, too. It was sunny - would have been too much for my eyes - and crowded. Apparently something like 8 large cruise ships docked the same day we did. It was supposed to be the busiest day of the year for Ketchikan...around 10,000 tourists. Yikes! We were only supposed to be there for 4 hours. Too short, if you ask me. Anyway, our departure time was 12 and we left at 2:30 p.m. Which means that we missed most of Misty Fjords. But I did include a picture of the fjords area. Don't you wish you were there??!... read more

Greetings from Ketchikan! It has been a long time since we’ve been able to update, but finally, the moment you’ve all been waiting for has arrived: the next installment! It has been a long journey, filled with pleasant and unpleasant surprises that have dramatically affected the course our trip has taken. But, as the old adage says, it truly is about the journey, and not the destination. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of this. We left Gustavus on July 9, late in the evening. We had waited most of the day for strong winds to subside, and almost thought we’d have to wait another day to launch, but by 6:30 pm we were able to load our boats and launch from the public dock area. We crossed Icy Passage to Pleasant Island, and paddled around ... read more

My hopes are not always realized, but I always hope.______Ovid LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 19, 2005, Sunday. We were awakened by an employee of the ferry going door-to- door, knocking, and calling,” One hour ‘til Ketchikan”. We have noticed folks in Alaska are a bit “lay-back”. They move slowly and efficiency is not high on their list of priorities. After docking, we drove off the ferry and headed to the Safeway. For some reason our “frig” isn’t working properly? We need some supplies. Downtown Ketchikan is quite dependent on tourism. Everyday cruise ships stop and the tourists flock into town. As we scouted around, we inquired about a plane trip to the fjords, it seems pricey. As we continued to walk the weather turned rainy and cooler. A good rainproof jacket with hood is ... read more

To be able to look back upon one’s life in satisfaction, is to live twice.____Kahil Gibran LINKS Name TRAVEL TIPS June 20, 2005, Tuesday. Since the day began drizzly and foggy, we were not anxious to schedule a flight to the fjords. Our first stop was to pick up the bikes. In Ketchikan you can go north or south, west is to the sea and east is to the mountains. So we biked south to Saxman Totem Pole Park, complete with clan/lodge house. We both liked the idea of the talking stick. When one holds the “talking stick” it is that person’s turn to talk, no one else may speak, I want one!! The bike trail runs along the water and as we returned we stopped at the “red-light” district. During the hay-day of the ... read more

This morning we just had to get out of bed – even though it was only 6:00! (We had gone to bed at 10:30 the night before, and we continued throughout the cruise to find the air and excitement soporific.) Since we were on the sea-ward side of the ship, we had a front-row seat at Ketchikan O’Hare. Every minute or so, sea planes landed or took off. Occasionally, two were landing at the same time or one was landing seemingly in the take-off path of another. Plus, fishing boats and tourist fishing boats were making their way out of the harbour. All through breakfast and until we left to see the town, this air-borne hustle bustle was fascinating. Ruth was a little surprised and quite proud to see that all the planes were Canadian de ... read more
