Hello everyone! If any of you happen to have had a look at my planned itinerary and compared it with the blogs I'm posting, you may have noticed that I'm not where I should be... Today I'm writing about what I have done on the 1st and 2nd of February. The plan by that point was to be in Tikkal (Guatemala). As I write this, I am waiting to leave Mexico in the next few hours. So I am a few days behind, but I've also had a slight change of plan. First of all, I'm behind because I stopped for an extra day in Campeche due to my poorlyness, followed by an extra day in Merida due to its loveliness and then a day in Valladolid because of my poor planning of the required Chichen ... read more

Cuba finished, we filed onto the Yak 42D for the return flight to Cancún. This time our seats were towards the back. It seemed like the constructors of the plane had miscalculated – the legroom got progressively less towards the back, almost as if they had tried to stuff just a few extra rows in. The seat was so narrow my knees didn't actually fit and either stuck out into the aisle or jammed into the back of the poor woman in front of me. Still, it took my mind off how sick I was feeling – deep breaths all the way back to Mexico. Back into Cancún. Big cars, advertising, traffic. Just a little bit weird, it almost felt a bit familiar, a little homey. Upon arrival we discovered a massive rort at the airport. ... read more

Our last morning at Casa Del Sol. We had pancakes for breakfast. Delicioso! They're more like crepes than american pancakes. Yumm. After deciding not to head to Punta Allen yesterday, due to the non-stop rain, we spent the day being entirely lazy with the rest of the people in the hostel. It was actually cold. We had on jackets, pants. Brrrr. It was super duper windy & the air was cold. We had a fairly uneventful day. I got my hair cut & Geoff left the camera at the shop. Yikes! We didnt realize it for hours & searched our room, the hostel. Then remembered the last place we saw it. Thankfully, the woman who cut my hair, Sandra from Guatemala, had hung onto the camera & gave it back to us when we arrived there ... read more

The last few days have been fun. We've stayed in Tulum at Casa del Sol, which is a great little find here. The daily breakfast has been different every day & delicious. Probably because Geoff & I are totally in love with the hand made tortillas (pancakes one day, tortillas with cabbage & beans, tortillas with eggs, beans & catsup). Yummmm. On Monday (1-10) we went diving in Cenotes. It was really different & beautiful. It's a challenge to maintain your bouyancy. I managed to hit a few stalagtites, oops! We went to two Cenotes. The first was Gran Cenote & you could see the light from the outside the entire time. It was amazing. Not a lot of fish but the structures (stalagtites & mites) are incredible. It sort of seems like you are in ... read more

We made our way to Tulum today. Not too tough. We packed up our backpacks at Sandos & are still unsure how they seem heavier now than when we carried them through the Seattle airport. Who knows. We haven't added much, just some extra sunblock (yikes, we are white) & some small shampoos from the hotel. We got the last two seats together on the bus, what luck! & watched one couple argue & get off the bus because they couldn't find seats... At least the bus had AC because it was muggy today. Lot's of clouds apparently equates to mugginess. Is that how you spell that? We arrived in Tulum & walked around. Looked at a couple hostels. One looked awesome & was full. One was stinky with a terrible bed. It hurt your butt ... read more

Geo: 20.125, -87.45 Blog 16 We moved to Tuxla Gutierra which is 17 hours drive down the road from Tulum, in the state of Chiapas. But before saying more about that I want to add a few thoughts about Tulum. We were there for 3 weeks but it seemed more (in a good way) because we felt so settled and we were quite sad to leave. I think it was because the people were so friendly and we had chance to communicate with others (hotel owners and staff, Mateo, people in restaurants etc) as we saw the same people everyday. Even the traffic was very calm and always stopped to let us cross to the point where we often had a stalemate as we expected cars to ignore us so we would stand by the kerb, ... read more

ok, so here in Valladolid, a bigger town on the way to Chichen Itza, im sitting in a lovely hostel that has been converted out of an old nunnary next to a big colonial church. pretty cool, bright colours everywhere, 2 pet chihuahas (everyone has one!) to play with (its ok mum and pat they´re fine :p) and lots of mexican music blearing. Plus there is an excellent internet connection, my last blog was from somewhere where it took me a whole hour to type that little amount because it would have to load each sentence slowly! So... after dumoing our gear at the Chalupa hotel, we got up very early and caught a cheap taxi out to the grand cenote! (Dad you´ll love this). It is one of the best cenotes to see in the ... read more

hola amigos! so we´re in hot steamy Tulum after spending the night in Cancun last night. We flew in late and made it to the hostel Nest at about 9pm. We ate dinner at a cute little park called Parque las palapas which was up the road, we bought soft tacos and a drink for total $50 pesos = around $5US for both of us. then headed to the supermarket... theres no soap or toilet paper at the hostel! before heading back before 11am - when the desk clerk goes to bed and locks the gates for the night. (no one has keys at this place-you ring the bell out front and they let you in). We went to bed in a dorm with 12 beds, but only one other was occupied - or so we ... read more

Hola hola ! Today I am in Tulum. So, this morning I caught a minibus, called here a "collectivo" to get there. Basically it is a Toyota Hiace (again, free ad..) loaded with 15 people seated...and what you can fit in standing ! It costs 35 pesos for 60km / 45min. Similarly to Playa del CArmen, Tulum is super-hyper-ultra-mega touristic ! Looks like the Mont-St-Michel, with groups wearing a badge and the guide yelling "group AAAAA". It is very cliché, in a way it is made for americans to visit quickly. All paths are very clean, well defined, signs in english with big letters, you almost have marks on the ground to show you the best spot to take a picture, and obviously on the way to the ruins you have many souvenirs shop, the little ... read more

Geo: 20.125, -87.45 Since we arrived in Mexico we have seen 4 processions celebrating the Bicentenary of the start of the fight for independence and also, I think, acknowledging and celebrating developments in Mexican institutions such as schools, police, fire services etc. They take place early in the morning and everyone in Tulum seemed to stop work and watch. There is much whistling by the teachers and leaders to co-ordinate the groups (eg whistle - pom poms up, another whistle – pom poms down) but also anarchy on the part of participants so it is all chaotic and fun. No-one is very formal although a lot of effort has been put into the preparation of clothes, props and choreography. Hope you enjoy the photographs.... read more
