Tulum is gorgeous. An hour south of the craziness and American- ness of Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and you have a stunning strip of white, fine sand and clear waters, and rustic, noffensive cabana accommodation lining its shores. Before I went out to the beach I decided to check into a hostel for the first night of being in Tulum. I had wanted to book a cabana if Steve had come with me, but thought it a bit excessive booking one for myself. I booked a dorm bed in a 4 bed dorm and have decided I am too old for this now! It wasn't awful, but I just like my own space and to not have to deal with anyone else! I shared with only one other girl, a german girl called Stefanie, and ... read more

Blog number 2 lets go! PLAYA DEL CARMEN Actually better than we first thought, the streets are lined with mexicans selling you the world¨s garbage : hats/slippers/sweets and fake mayan crap. But the nightlife was apart from the shitty Dansen Bij Jansen music pretty good, we met some beautiful mexican girls who i later met again before i left Playa. The beach in Playa was nothing short of AMAZING : beautiful white sandy beaches, the best weather ever and crystal clear sea. Sitting at the beach at night was also very relaxing. We made the trendy beachclub fusion our place to be for relaxing, wich served us some live reaggea and fireshows at night. And of course we met some amazing people there that gave us a truly memorable last night. COZUMEL Island half an hour ... read more

I arrived to Chetumal after an easy boat ride and was excited by the Mexican flag flying at the port and the novelty of finally being able to eat Mexican food in Mexico! A simple taxi ride later (hailing one from the street instead of the robbing bastards that wait for the tourists at the port) and I was at Chetumal Bus Station buying my ticket for Tulum (4 Hours / $12). I arrived there as always without any real idea of where I was staying bit I knew the options were between the developing downtown or the handful of places on the beach. In the end, I just followed a couple of other travellers I met on the bus to hostel “Casa del Sol” in the downtown area and just a few minutes walk from ... read more

Well, I'm about to leave “Bikini Bootcamp” – a fabulous fitness/yoga ‘retreat’ in Tulum, Mexico. It’s set on a gorgeous beach, so each morning has begun with Yoga Sun Salutations, an hour long walk along the beach ... or both ... and all before breakfast! I've really enjoyed the experience ... with a bunch of great women (all Americans except for one Brit). Healthy food, exercise, a couple of massages, plus time for relaxation in a beautiful place ... after only a few days I felt much healthier. However, I must admit my body is slightly in shock after 3-4 hours of exercise a day ... and that's skipping a class each day! Usually the daily schedule incorporates 1-2 hours of yoga, some cardio activity and maybe a dance class or boxing etc. Plus some short ... read more

Andrew could only have 5 days away from work and school, so we took off for a short tour around the Yucatan. When we arrived in Cancun, getting the rental car and finding our way to our cabana was no problem at all. Pretty much everyone spoke some English, so getting around was easy. We were actually staying on Tankah Bay which was just north of Tulum, and a private ex-pat community. There were 2 hotels there, but mostly it was large beach homes. The cabana was right on the prettiest beach I've ever seen. We could snorkel right off the beach, and we had the whole beach to ourselves. Not a single person crossed or even came near the section of beach we were staying on. The cabana was basically a bed and breakfast. Our ... read more

'Avoid Playa del Carmen unless you want to be transported to the Costa del Sol wearing a St George’s flag on your back, smashed off your noggin on cheap cocktails, being woken up in on the beach by cruise ship tourists taking photos of you to show their rellies back home.' C. Warren, 2011 I opted to stay in Playa Del Carmen for four nights. Were it not for the fact that Stacey and I were meeting up with some friends, I would probably have gone off Playa a lot quicker. As it happened, our friend, Jennie, was already there and met us shortly after we arrived and gawped at our truly revolting hostel. In addition to Jennie, I'd agreed to dive with Steve, another chap that we'd met in the socially abundant period in Cancun. ... read more

Hi, so I just got back from a wonderful trip. I try to avoid these kinds of trips as much as possible because they tend to eat big parts of your budget if you do stuff like this regularly, but I figured one every once in a while is ok and helps to appreciate different places. I picked this one because the night before I met the guide in the little bar of the hotel, the hotel-boss-lady, who I was first talking to, introduced me to him. He seemed like a really cool dude and explained in detail what we would be doing. So the trip was … a snorkel trip :P yeye I know what your thinking 'o wow gee, a snorkel trip, that must have been “fun”' well it actually really was lots of ... read more

OK, so I ended up not going to the beach like I said I would. When the time came to pick between a 10minute walk plus a 20minute bus-ride to go to the beach or just jump in the pool … I did the latter :) And as there were plenty people there it turned out to be fun too. Later on the evening there was some kind of ballet-show at the square I mentioned before, which well turned out to be not my cup of tea(possibly partially due to that it was well crowded and still kinda hot). The day after I did a trip which got promoted at the hostel, it was a trip to 3cenotes in the area and it involved some peculiar transportation methods. First we( I went with two more dudes ... read more
