So at the last minute we decided to leave Belize and head back up to Mexico in 1 day. We got up very early and jumped on the local chicken bus at 6:30am, which all use to be American school buses. The bus left and stopped every 100meters to pick people up along the way. The bus got very very full and the ride was very very bumpy. We did this first bus ride for 4 hours to Belize city. Here we jumped out with our luggage and asked when the next bus to Chetemal (Mexico) was? We were informed it left in 5 mins from platform 1. We ran to the platform and jumped on the 2nd chicken bus of the day with our luggage and it was more packed than the first. The bus ... read more

Today was my last full day before leaving to go back home. It was weird that a month had flown by, yet it felt like I had been away for longer. I think the reason I had felt like I had been away for so long was because everyday had been so action packed. Although it would have been really nice to have chilled on a beach in Playa, I really wanted to see Tulum, despite being bored of seeing Mayan ruins. The reason I was so interested to see the Mayan ruins at Tulum was because of the beautiful surroundings as its located next to the Caribbean sea with pure white sandy beaches Anyway a small group of us decided to get a taxi/minibus service from Playa to Tulum. I can't quite remember how much ... read more

Somewhere like this doesn't require much of a budget traveler review, since it's in the middle of the beaten path, but here are a few things worth mentioning: 1. Beach // Yes, the beach is amazing -- maybe the best I've ever been on. It is perfect for running, it is fairly empty in the morning, there are no bugs, there are no dangerous things in the water, there is no one walking around trying to sell things, and the water temperature in July was perfect. 2. Access // The beach is about 6 kilometers from the town, and a taxi is 6-7 dollars. There are buses, but the times are limited. There are expensive resorts on the beach. 3. Sleep // Stay at Casa del Sol Hostel. The Weary Traveler was one of the strangest ... read more

3 pizzas and 3 beers = US$37 = Happy chaps. Just made our bus from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum, walked it to the bus stop - BooYah! Megan didn't lose a wheel and Jana and I didn't break our backs. Loving the back packing, gaining some serious muscle. Jumped on the bus, I sat next to a spanish, she fell asleep as the air con dripped on her, I didn't know what to do, I was fine. I'll just ignore it...diddly dee, potato. Found our hotel. it's amazing! It's brand new! Only has 9 rooms and we're in the 9th. It has it's own kitchen, bathroom king bed, bath robes and slippers, mmmmmm love luxury. So we've decided to extend our trip a few more nights till we leave on the 12th June and be ... read more

All four of us headed to Mexico....we nearly missed the boat from Caye Caulker to Belize city as we got the time wrong, but they held it for us luckily. We then took a taxi to the bus station and got on a chicken bus which would take us to the Mexican border crossing in the town of Santa Elena, we arrived as the sun was setting and took a taxi from there to the bus station in Chetumal. We got the 1st class bus from Chetumal to Tulum and arrived at about 11pm. With an idea of where to stay we wandered down the street to check if they had space available, alas no. So it was on to the next place, probably only 1km from the first hostel it felt like an age walking ... read more

Chichen itza About to go into a Mayan Skies show. Arrived at Chichen Itza at about 3pm after leaving Merida at 730. After a bit of confusion with the rental car (no registration plates, but apparently it's okay) made our way to Uxmal. The ruins there were pretty spectacular. Still amazed every time we go to those ruins at what they were able to achieve. Spent a bit of time just sitting at the top of the pyramid looking out at the "town". Then we made our way back towards Merida and then East towards Cancun. Passed a truck with 2 massive boulders on it, making the ruins even more spectacular. Roads weren't as bad as we thought. Arrived at Chichen Itza. Ruins are right outside our front door. 100m away. Maya Skies show was amazing. ... read more

Day 8 of our travels sore us catching a bus to Tulum, this was something we anticipated with great expectation. Having seen photos (Jenny & Damien’s!) of Tulum and read about it we were very excited to get there. The bus was very comfortable and cost about 110 pesos each. We opted for front row seats so as to have the best view on the journey, staring down the approaching road was more interesting than spending the journey staring into thick jungle. The region is so flat, it’s not the most dramatic of drives. We vacated the bus at Tulum to find there are 2 stops in Tulum, one about 2km outside the town and 1 in the town itself. We didn’t know this and got the wrong one thinking for a few minutes ... read more

I didn't expect to be making life or death decisions on our last day in Cancun. All I wanted was a haircut and shave for the clean look in front of Amei's ever present photography efforts. Of course, just as I was approaching the barber chair, Amei's worries about possible dull and reused HIV contaminated razor blades now concerned me. Ah what the heck, now we can't even get a clean shave without worrying. Well, we were in the back alleys of central Cancun, next to a local dilapidated outdoor market with hanging meats, dirty food carts and the offensive odors of open sewers. The $2 cost for the shave overrode my caution and I went for it. Immediately, my fear of infection was replaced by pain. The dull blade simply pulled and plucked my chin ... read more
