I arrived in Merida in the wee hours of the morning and was lucky enough to find some decent accommodation immediately. The owner of the hostel was actually hanging out at the bus station at 6am with free rides, so it was an easy decision. I had a moment of doubt when I saw my pack being roped onto the roof of a gas guzzling 1970's jalopy, but after a coughing start we finally made it. I then opted for a bit of a snooze before walking through the central Zocolo area. I quickly learned of the biggest attractions in town; hammocks and artistic murals. Vendors seem to outnumber tourists as they share their woven lounge chairs in a variety of colours for all available wallets walking by. I was tempted to take one home with ... read more

Our flight from Havana ended up being delayed by 4 or 5 hours, so we ended up wasting a whole day travelling and didn't arrive in Tulum till late on the evening of 3rd January. We were staying at a place called El Paraiso. The rooms were fine .. just a shame they weren't beachfront .. instead they looked onto a sandy car park .. not quite the seaview promised by the agent!! The next 8 days in Tulum were exceedingly lazy ... so much so that we didn't even make it down to visit the ruins which were only about a kilometre up the beach!! The beach at Tulum is amazing ... the whitest of sand and the most turquoise of seas .. stunning. Most days we ended up drinking cocktails from mid-afternoon onwards! We ... read more

Must apologise for the delay. We are now in Belize but will write this entry about our last few days in Mexico. We left Playa Del Carmen on Sunday morning dosed up on Diacalm heading for Vallodalid. We arrived 3 and a half hours later to a torrential downpour that even had the locals hiding. After trekking through the labaryinth of side streets we arrived at the hostel we'd been planning to stay at, only to discover it was closed. Soaked to the bone, and beyond caring, we set up camp in the hotel next door. The next morning we managed to track down the elusive hostel owner - Antonio Negro Aguillar, an ex-baseball star from the 50's and 60's who now runs a sports shop and the cheapest hostel in town, with a sideline in ... read more

... read more

Tuesday 31st May 2005 : Bye Bye Miami - Hola Mexico Up early, taxi at 7am to catch the Tri-Rail train from Ft Lauderdale to Miami. Then Catch the shuttle bus to Miami Airport. Then find the correct terminal for American Airlines. We checked in with tons of time to spare. Flight to Cancun fine. Through customs and on to the bus for Playa Del Carmen en route to Tulum. The bus from PDC to Tulum was not so comy but it was OK. Arrived at the Weary Traveller and they were full but had an option on a cabana 400 yards down the road at the Ranchero Tranquilo. The cabana was primitive but had mossie nets up already, and breakfast was included, and we were hot so we took it. (And the staff, Daniel and ... read more

Another brief update. Made it fairly painlessly to Mexico from Miami. Now sweltering in Tulum on the caribbean coast. Biggest thunderstorm I have ever been under last night ! Re the title - it was a hit for (Long) John Baldry, but was it released for the 1968 Olympics or the 1970 World Cup Finals ? Off to Merida by bus tomorrow.... read more

Having survived the overnight bus journey with a bit of sleep we arrived in Tulum VERY early in the morning. The local hostel didn't any vacancies, but sent us in the direction of a nearby hotel. It may have been a former prison....but at least we had our own bathroom, even if there wasn't a toilet seat and we did have an unexpected overnight guest. During an unexpected tropical storm, we were forced to take shelter in a local bar, where Liverpool were playing Chelsea in the Champions League semi final. After a couple of beers we got chatting with an english couple (who had come in to see the game - although after several tequilias - I don't think that Claire could see anything!) who recommended hiring bikes and going to the beach - how ... read more
