hope you are all well. i am in mexico and am doing well, except for a very minor cold. we spent the last two nights in a beach cabana in tulum. tulum is 130km south of cancun....so the coastline offers the same beautiful beaches on the caribbean. of course staying in a cabana offered us the luxury of walking out the door and being on the beach. but luxury has it´s price (well worth it!!!)...like mosquito nets and sandflies. there was an intense storm last night and the thatched roof of our cabana couldn´t handle all the rain so the roof started to leak a little...right over the bed. yesterday we swam as long as the sea would permit....it was a bit rough so we didn´t stay in too long. then we went to the tulum ... read more

Having a wonderful few days on the beach after spending whole 15 hours on a coach getting here - all worth it! Sleeping in bunglows on the beach - you cant reserve so its a case of hunting around when you arrive in the heat. Sam and I made as executive decision to stay somewhere nicer to avoid cockroaches.... and the lack of mossie nets. Worth while! Having a couple of days in these rather luxury cabanas enjoying a rest after a fairly busy week doing the whole of Guatamala… those photos are to come are on my memory card that is locked up. ... read more

14 hour bus journey to Tulum was very comfortable (posh bus!), apart from I woke up in the middle of the night to find that the bus had stopped at a military check point (lots of armed men), and a man was standing in the aisle, saying to me "don't be alarmed, we're just making routine checks.. where are you from?".. so I told him.. and he seemed OK with that hmmm! .. oh yes and a slight problem with smelly feet... the walking sandals don't seem to be living up to their "odour free" promise! Tulum is very expensive, though we've found a lovely cabaña on the beach for GBP25 a night, which is the most we've paid anywhere so far. The cabaña is made of sticks and thatch, so plenty of room for iguanas, ... read more

After Tulum we went to what I would say was our first non-real tourist Mexican town, Valladolid, about 80 miles from the coast. We both liked it here as it was a very warm and friendly place and what we expected Mexico to be like. We arrived on a week end which was a bonus as they had a mini festival in the local park and it was nice to see all the locals out with the family enjoying themselves and having a great time. It felt like a real nice community and we were made to feel very welcome which was nice. They had lots of food stalls, which were great and beyond cheapness nothing over a pound. I always thought I would never have anything hotter than a curry but Mexican food bring heat ... read more

I have lived 23 out of the 24 years of my life in Texas. I have been to Europe three times, Canada twice, New Zealand, Fiji, and Australia... but this June I went to Mexico for the first time. I know, I know! I'm sorry! I'm just not a border-town kind of girl, and camping was more my kind of Spring Break activity. So it took the wedding of my first real friend to get me to cross the border. Hill and I met in kindergarten- we were Brownies together, had first crushes together, and all that sort of important stuff, so there was no way I could miss her wedding! We stayed in a little village called Akumal, which is about an hour south of Cancun. I was completely surprised at how few people were ... read more

We Did Something, But Nothing Really We got a real jump on the day today, getting started just after 12:00 pm. Fully recoverd from the night before we headed out for some desayuno por Marco y almuerzo por mi. He grabbed some huevos y jamon mixture and I treated myself to a dinner sized portion of burritos con pollo y queso, arroz, y frijoles. I'm guessing our meal took around 45 minutes. I don't know about time very often due to the fact that I'm not carrying a watch or travel clock with me. After eating we searched out a place to get some washing done for us. This search took us down some back roads and we did eventually find a place. The problem was that it was a private place and they said we ... read more

Just a quick update Currently, I'm in Tulum, Mexico. Tulum is located about 2 1/2 hours south of Cancun by bus and is the home of the Mayan ruins of the city of Tulum. Cancun Stories Just to wrap up a few more stories about Cancun. My last comment about Cancun had me learning a new card game with a group of 4 at my hostel. After the game continued on until about 12:00 AM and slowly people started to fade into their dorm rooms to head off to bed I made my way to the Zona Hotelera with Marco. Marco is 29 year old Swiss sports teacher and handball trainer when he's at home. Currently, he is on a 4 week holiday between his various teaching and training jobs. In Zona Hotelera we headed to ... read more

Hi guys... Well, the last few days have felt like weeks! It's been fantastic to be back on the beach again, and the Caribbean at that! My first glimpse of the beach - GORGEOUS! I've never seen water so gorgeously blue, and sand so beautifully white!! I met a Finnish girl at the hostel, and we decided to spend a night in a cabana on the beach - it was great!! For only $6.50 each, we even had a window with an ocean view!! We also had a great night out at the bar on the beach (complete with swings! :)))) ), and a mexican guy introduced us to all the mexican cocktails! Just hoping they delete the pictures and videos of our butts from when we danced on the bar!!! After the bar closed, we ... read more

Where to start..its been a while since we last wrote? We set off from San Cristobal at 6.30 in the morning along with the 7 guys from Manchester Uni. We got a tour bus that would take us to some waterfalls, through the Chiapas Mountains and then on to Palenque. The waterfalls included one from the film Predator...although no one could say for sure. They were still beautiful and great fun to swim near..we also drove through the area of Chiapas where the Zapatistas reside so we saw some crazy political murals. The guide never stopped talking although it was in Spanish so most of us didn´t really know what was going on. Palenque was amazing...crazy setting in the middle of the jungle and lots of noisy howler monkeys (they sound like dinosaurs). It was extremely ... read more

Intro to Tulum Famed for its seaside Mayan ruins and cheap sand-floored huts along over 12 kilometers of quiet beaches, Tulum is a big-time backpacker destination. Theruins can be seen in an hour or so, but many folks linger for a few days doing little but practice the sit-and-stare-then-swim (repeat) impulses that we all have deep down inside. Tulum is near good reefs too, and snorkel tours are cheaper here than in other beach towns. It's also a good base to check out area cenotes (large, natural limestone caves used for water storage or ceremonial purposes) and Coba ruins. History Tulum is believed to have been an important port town during its post-Classic heyday (AD 1200 - 1521). Buildings were painted red, blue and yellow, with ceremonial fires burning atop the seaside watchtower. Arriving by... read more
