After spending a few days holiday-ing on the beach in Playa, we decided to head south down the Mayan Riviera to Tulum. This historical site is the most visited of the Maya sites in the Yucatבn partly due to its spectacular Caribbean back-drop and also because until the late 60´s the area was only accessible by boat. Tulum was built around 1200AD. There are three major structures of interest: El Castillo (the tower which dominates the area and is perched on the cliff edge), The Temple of the Frescoes and The Temple of the Descending God. Inscriptions are clearly visible on the ruins. Also at the Tulum ruins the Papantla Flyers perform a pre-Hispanic ritual dedicated to the Sun God. All history aside, we also enjoyed possibly one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever ... read more

Hello! We've had a very busy few weeks travelling up through Central America. Our last efforts were from Costa Rica and since then we have travelled up through Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and we're currently in Mejico, country number 13 - phew!! Nicaragua: We headed straight for Granada, rather than Managua (the capital for all you pub quizzers and v dubious). Granada is a very nice colonial town on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. From there we visited Isla Ometepe in the middle of the lake. Now you woudn't think a boat ride across a lake would be that bad - but this one was something else... I deteriorated into silence and Dave feared for his life as the waves rolled over the front of the 2 storey boat... The island was lovely and the locals ... read more

saludos desde mexico, I´m sitting in Tulum at 9 pm, my shirt is sticky, but the breeze feels great. Tulum is about halfway between the Guatemala border and Cancun, and is right on the Caribbean. The water is a dreamy light blue, the beaches a blinding white, and the coconut palms and cabañas line the beach for miles. There are plenty of tourists, though it doesn´t feel overwhelming. I arrived here yesterday, after two long busrides which started at 5:30 in Flores (near Tikal). It continued through the strange country of Belize which reminded me at times of Oakland, at times the southern US. There were plenty of blacks and latinos, sporting american shirts, wearing their hats tilted to the side. Meanwhile the houses were all up on stilts and you wouldn´t be surprised if a ... read more
