Was ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were changing countries, travelling north from Caye Caulker in Belize to Tulumin Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. We woke early at 5am and organised our packs for the long travel day ahead. We were heading to Tulum, so we had six hours of travel and a potentially lengthy border crossing ahead. We checked out of Caye Caulker Plaza Hotel at 6:30am, picked up the breakfast packs we had pre-ordered the day before from Amor y Cafe and made our way to the jetty on the beachfront. We left Caye Caulker around 7am and sped across the Caribbean Sea in an open water taxi to Belize City, arriving around 8am. We collected our bags, loaded them into a small minibus and left at 8:30am. We eventually found ourselves travelling Belize’s Northern Highway on our way ... read more

.The journey to Tulum, a major tourist attraction 130 kilometres south of Cancun, was uneventful and far less stressful than driving in the city, despite markings on the road suddenly disappearing for long periods of time. We had only a tiny map of the town which didn't show our hotel. By the time we found the hotel, after wandering dark alleys and sleepy streets, it was completely dark. The man on the counter spoke no English but we managed to deal with check-in. He handed us a key and then disappeared into a back room. We walked down the corridor and found that none of the rooms had numbers. Confused, we called the man back and he led us to the room. We set about cooking dinner with our camp stove and soon wonderful smells were ... read more

Tulum is somewhere in Mexico that I could see myself spending a long time at. It is a little town that is across a highway, with beaches, famous Mayan ruins, and it has such a great hippie vibe. I had came here in November for a weekend with some of the girls I taught with on Isla. We had stayed in a lovely little hostel with our own bungalow, ate delish Thai food and falafel (such a treat getting something different than only Mexican food). The hostel also had free bike hire so we cycled along to the famous Mayan ruins here which were cool. After that trip I ventured back to Tulum, however this time was for mucho fiesta! Me, Nikki and my man - Mau, came together on the 31st of December and stayed ... read more

On our first day in Tulum, we arrived on the bus from Playa, which took a bit over an hour. We found our hotel, a short walk from the bus station. It had a handful of rooms around a nice little garden courtyard and was very pleasant. We hired bikes and cycled out of town to Gran Cenote, a limestone sinkhole connected to an underground river. We snorkelled in the cold, clear, water in the caves with fish and turtles, amongst some spectacular rock formations. After a hot cycle ride back into town, we stopped for ice lollies before heading to the beach. The scale on the tourist map is definitely a bit dubious, but after a fairly long ride, we got there. We found a quiet spot and cooled off in the sea! 'Rust bucket', ... read more

We arrived in Tulum on the eve of Mexican Independence Day, and spent the evening enjoying the traditional festivities (always held the night before) outside the town hall. There was music, a flag raising, a surprisingly interesting speech - given that it was in Spanish and then fireworks and confetti - more confetti than I have ever seen in my life! The Tulum ruins were beautiful, even compared to Chichen Itza, mostly due to its location on the cliffs by the ocean, and it was a lovely day ending on the beach. We ended the day back at our hostel before the night bus to Belize City (departing 00:45) ... read more

We just spent a week in Mexico. Our five-year-old son was excited since he loves Mexican food (especially quesadillas, but we found the local equivalent, "gringas". Not a joke - that's what they call it when you put cheese and meat in a tortilla.) We chose to go down to Tulum, to avoid the Spring Break crowds, and I'm glad for it. Tulum is a nice chill town, with interesting people-watching. It's quiet, the kind of place where moms walk their kids home from school, alongside dogs running in the streets, many people (tourists and locals) on bicycles, and the cars go slow enough to avoid accidents. It's the kind of place where a rooster awakens you in the morning. We stayed at the Posada Yum Kin, with its gracious hostess, Graciela. This inn is very ... read more

Colectivo Ride Once we'd had our holiday in Playa del Carmen we headed out to Tulum. This was our first experience with the Colectivo; a bus/taxi hybrid. It has a set route and picks up multiple people like a bus, but doesn't seem to have set stops or a schedule like a taxi. It may have places where it will often stop since the one we took was common for locals to use to get to work at the resorts between the highway and beaches. It was a fun ride down a relatively major highway (the 307) with frequent and fast deceleration to stop for someone flagging the colectivo on the side of the road; also surprisingly frequent deceleration for speed bumps on the highway. With few overpasses over the highway for turning left, places for ... read more

The hotel owner is Italian, so he made some good expresso for breakfast. The house dog is a little Chihuahua named Bimbo (after the bread!), always dressed in a blue jacket. Took the Collectivo this morning to the ruins. This minibus, which holds about 14 people, goes all the way to Playa del Carmen. We got picked up about a block from the hotel, very convenient. Entry to the ruins was 65p per person, a very reasonable price of about $5. There were many tour buses there, so very crowded. This is a smaller area than the other ruins, and you can't walk up any of the structures. The landscaping is beautiful, with paths set amidst palm trees and lush green vegetation. The overall location is gorgeous. The ruins are built atop a cliff overlooking the ... read more
