Rain this morning. The breakfast tables not under the roof were wet, and the cats were not happy. Off to Tulum today. We purchased our tickets yesterday, $21 each for the 4.5 hour ride. The rains let up by the time we left for the depot, but skies still overcast. The bus left right on time, 10:40. The bus was labeled Playa del Carmen, so not all that obvious. It was a first class bus, very comfortable, even a bathroom. Movies were playing on the pull-down screens. Some kind of hammer was attached to the wall by our seat. The Spanish sign said we should use this to break the glass in case of an emergency. Once we were out of Merida, we moved along the highway quickly. Bus paid one $21 fee at a toll ... read more

Tahan majapaikkaan sisaltyi aamupala. Aamupalalle tuli myos kaksi nuorta suomalaisnaista. Toinen heista kysyi toiselta: mitahan vittua tama on. Tapasin amerikkalais-meksikolaisen pariskunnan, joita olin jututtanut myos Chichen Itzassa. Palasin colectivolla, otin vahan aurinkoa selkaan ja vatsaan. Koska rannalle ei mene colectivoja, hylkasin idean siita etta olisin kaynyt katsomassa rantaa - ehka Cancunissa ehtii viela. Tulin sitten klo 15 kopioimaan kuvia ja paivittamaan tata blogia. Illalla lahdin sitten kierrokselle. Kavin syomassa ja juomassa muu... read more

Before we left sunny Southsea we decided we would give volunteering a bash while on our travels. Not only to do something rewarding and fun, but also to prolong our trip and get the budget back in check after what we knew would be a costly few weeks diving down the coast of Quintana Roo while Neil and Tom were with us in Mexico. While at home researching, we came across what sounded like the coolest volunteering opportunity by a long shot, an opportunity to work at a monkey sanctuary in the Mayan jungle, 10km from Tulum. There was no option to reserve a spot, you simply had to hope you were close enough to slide into a vacancy at the time one became available. As the time we were parting ways with Neil and Tom ... read more

Our eight hour trip from Flores to Chetumel in Mexico through Belize took 10.5 hours. We were dropped off at the bus station and there was a bus heading to Tulum in ten minutes so we hopped on rather than spending a night in Chetumel. We arrived in Tulum just after 10pm and walked down the main road until we found somewhere to stay. Tulum is on the main highway and not an attractive town but it is situated near the Tulum ruins and a spectacular beach. As a result it is growing and becoming a bit of a tourist hub. The next morning we hired bikes for the day and began by heading out to the Tulum ruins which are built in the most amazing setting overlooking the Caribbean sea. They are the only Mayan ... read more

Our Arrival The ADO bus from Vallalodid arrived at 2:55pm. The bus terminal is on the main highway between Jupiter Norte and Alfa Norte in Tulum town. There are free maps available in the bus station. Where We Stayed Hotel Maya - on the main highway a couple of blocks south of the ADO bus station. M$300 for a dark double room with bathroom and internet in the room. We walked around Tulum town for a long time trying to find somewhere to stay and this was the cheapest we could find. What We Did Went to the beach - we have more time than money so decided to walk to the beach. It took about 1 1/4hours. We walked down the beach road and at the end you reach a fork. We went right first ... read more

So here we are. Having passed our penultimate border crossing and having our bags lined up, sniffed by dogs and prodded by riffle toting officials for the last time, we had arrived in Mexico once again. As we had arrived in the border town of Chetumal by boat, we still had to catch a taxi over to the main bus terminal and hop on a bus to take us four hours up the coast to the well renowned tourist town of Tulum. Being back in a Spanish speaking country, it was a brief battle to find someone who could help us find our hostel. We eventually found the small hostel set back off the main road in a quiet location, dropped our bags off and headed off in search of a nice cheap restaurant for dinner ... read more

Hola! It is much easier to ask how to get somewhere if you pronounce it correct. Saying Tul um instead of Too lum got us some weird looks. We eventually realised we just had to walk around the block from our place where all the collectivos hang out. They are kinda like mini van taxis that when they have enough people will head off to where you want to go stopping to let you off whenever you wanted. They then cut each other off on the hwy to pick up more people and therefore more money. We landed in the back of one which unfortunately was really hot and not full of tourist which would have meant an express to Tulum. Instead we seemed to stop every 5 kms as someone got out and someone new ... read more

No i wracam do Meksyku;-) To już prawie koniec mojego wyjazdu. Z Belize (Caye Caulker) odpływam bez żalu. Z Caye Caulker do Meksyku (miasto Chetumal) płynę wodną taksówką. Naliczają sobie jakieś podatki, baking fees itp. i wychodzi do zaplaty ponsd 30 USD:-( BELIZE? Nigdy wiecej!!!! Wtedy psy przystępują do obwąchiwania. Na szczęście nic nie znajdują i możemy szybko przejść do ... read more

It's now 5pm.. we arrived an hour and a half ago from our tour of Tulum. Guys.. this "Tulum Tour" sounds a bit boring, I know, so I will break it down for y'all so you will keep it in mind for when you visit this area. Nina and I both agree that by far.. this tour was THE BEST activity E-V-E-R. Let me rewind and start from this morning...Our morning started with breakfast at 645am because our tour guide was going to pick us up from our hotel at 730am, which he did. This tour company is called, "ALLTOURNATIVE.. ECOARCHAELOGICAL ADVENTURES"... they specialize in eco-conscious tours of Mayan communities, ruins, and jungles. They cooperate with the indigenous Mayan people in making sure that the land ... read more
