11th MAY 2009 - A PANTS ENDING TO OUR FIRST DAY IN TULUM......SO FUNNY!!! We arrived in Tulum at around 12pm (lunch time). As we hadn’t booked a hostel and didn’t have directions to any, we were hoping for an information desk or a tout! We got neither and it looked like we would have to trek about to find a hostel. We turned left out of the bus station and followed 4 girls who looked like they knew where they were going. Phillip followed us…looked like he was going to be tough to shake off! There was a hostel just down the road…bingo!! Turned out that they didn’t have any room and so we were back to square one. The girls got in a taxi and headed off somewhere leaving us with Phillip at the ... read more

When I left my job in Guatemala, I was in run-down condition. I hopped on a day-long bus ride through Belize to Quintana Roo, Mexico, where I awarded myself the expense of my own cabana, for the first time of the trip. I spent a week in Rancho Tranquilo, recovering, meeting travelers, hanging out with the kind and comical hotel manager, Abaristo, and spending a good deal of time walking, laying on the beach, tanning and bbqing with my new friend, Mary. Mary came to Rancho Tranuilo to revamp her life, to run away from the cold of the mountains in which she previously lived, and to have a perfectly suitable past-midlife crisis in a spontaneous, admirable fashion. She did everything she pleased, when she pleased and as she pleased. We gossiped, laughed, taught one another ... read more

Did what we said we would and got up super early and out the door, even giving up our free breakfast to head for Tulum Ruins. Fantastic time to go and wow what a place, ruins perched on top of a cliff by the beautiful carribean. Lizards running round and that brilliant blue water again. Its an amazing place and pretty breathtaking. Had a great morning and were leaving just as hundreds were arriving yay. Back to the Hostel for a while and then we went to check out a cenote....didnt want the giant ones for diving in so heard of a little one nearby which was great and cheap to get into. Was fantastic...Cenote is an underground water hole that all link up....the one we saw today was 3kms long and most people dive or ... read more

Hiya all, after an exhausting hike dragging the suitcases through the streets of Merida in the heat it was bliss to sit on the air conditioned bus for four hours. We arrived in Tulum about 3pm and made our way to the hostel we had booked at only to find that our booking hadnt been received and there was no room at the inn. So a bit of searching and we found a little place called casa del sol which is really nice place and we have a little room like a hut with a thatched roof. Took a wee rest and into town to do our favourite sport....shopping lol. Dinner too of course which was great but huge and ended up taking it home for our breakfast. Decided to have an early one to get ... read more

We took the night bus to Palenque to see some amazing ruins - the previous ones had been Zapotec or Aztec, these were the start of the Mayan ruins. These are set in the jungle with really loud howler monkeys in the background. We are not much for Museums but they have a particularly good one with a recreation of the tomb of Radiant Shield K'inich Janaab Pakal. Why doesn't anyone have fantastic names like this anymore! You can't go into the real one anymore because of humidity damage to the ruins. On the same day, we were also taken to a place called the Agua azul - translation being blue water. Its supposed to be these amazing water falls with turquoise blue water. Not so much when we were there as you can see from ... read more

(pictures to come) So we woke up late, had some breakfast and hung out with Jaimie for a while just talking about life and everything. She wants to start a book store in Tulum (mainly because she can't get books regularly.) We gave her the 2 books we'd just finished and wished her luck. When we left, ew took a casual drive up the coast to get back to Cancun. We stopped at various towns just to stop, Akumal being the first. We were not too impressed. The beach was beautiful, but difficult to access and even harder to find a margarita. Almost all of hte "bars" on the beach were from "all inclusive" hotels, which basically means that if you didn't pay the exorbitant price to stay at the hotel, you couldn't drink at their ... read more
