Friday - Saturday 14th-15th September We got some antibiotics from a local chemist to do something about Judy's stomach problem and it seemed to be working by Saturday evening. We went to CyC and met the regulars there again, we really have been accepted! Whilst there the heavens opened and it came down in torrents. By about 8.30 it still hadn't stopped so we went with Trevor and Sally in their Jeep Liberty to a restaurant, Es Cuentros. They are regulars here and we were led to a table and given a torch to read the menu as the place was only lit by candles - not good for older eyes! Their 'happy hour' goes from 8-10pm so Rags gave the red wine a little hammering! Great night in a very interesting atmosphere (the 2 ladies ... read more

Friday 7th September This morning we met the challenge of what we have nicknamed “Pancho's Ladder” rather than Jacobs Ladder in Perth. There are 200 steps compared to about 250 but with the humidity here it isn't any easier! With several of the locals we did our 3 (or slightly less for J) climbs before jumping into the ocean to cool off. Unfortunately, the ocean temperature is like a tepid bath and not very cooling so we had to test the pool as well when we got back to the condo. Rosa, the cleaning lady was in for the second time this week, not much to do as we keep the place fairly tidy. She looks for work however, and pulled apart our made up bed and changed the sheets again, took the towels, and to ... read more

Friday 31st August After an early (7am) start we made our way to the TTUR bus (an aircon public bus) stop. We decided to try this way rather than the easy way of grabbing a taxi as we had enough time to change our mind if it didn't work. This was Judy's idea of a bit of a challenge! The first bus ignored our wave as we weren't exactly at his stop, the second one took off as soon as it dropped off the passengers. Nothing like the buses in Acapulco who stopped everywhere. The third one we caught and arrived at the Central Camionaire with an hour to spare. On leaving the terminal the bus driver made a short detour to pick up a woman and 2 young children. They stayed in the front section ... read more

I went on two dives today; one reef and one drift. It was just me and the dive leader, Fausto. Unlike Australian dive leaders where they point to sea life, here they dig for it and pull it out. As was the case when Fausto dug around under a rock for an octopus and pulled it out. The poor thing must have been traumatised because it released so much ink to defend itself, I could barely see him. Then Fausto put it on my hand and asked me to pat it for a photo (I haven't developed the roll yet but I'm also holding a spiked puffer fish on it too!). In the time it took for him to take the photo, the octopus crawled up my arm and after a few attempts to pull it ... read more

The twelve hour bus trip from Playa Azul to Puerto Vallarta was hell. It was supposed to pick us up at 9.30pm but arrived at 12.30am. The bus was full as we were the second last stop and it reeked of urine. Mexican buses are well known for being overly cold from the air conditioning but the toilet is a steamroom and nobody appears to have hygiene standards. There was no toilet paper when we got on the bus so thankfully I had backup tissues with me. But still, during the stops you'd think the driver would check the status of the toilet, especially when we had twelve hours to go from our pickup point. With four hours to go we changed bus drivers but not buses so we were the only five left on the ... read more

It's hard to believe but the time for departure is almost here. We leave on Monday bound for Mexico City, Panama and then Quito. It's been quite the process getting to this point and it's easy to forget the incredible amount of organization required to do a trip of this kind. We discovered only a few days ago that my Mexican husband would need a special VISA to get into Ecuador. This important factoid was not mentioned in my ever trusty new copy of Lonely Planet so I was quite surprised to learn it was true. It just said "most nationalities don't need a Visa" but was very non-specific, so when my husband called the Ecuadorian embassy in Mexico City to learn he in fact DID need one, the paper chase was on! It was ... read more

As I mentioned in a previous Blog, I've been doing my research and for those of you interested in my findings thus far, or if you are considering a trip to the Central Highlands of Ecuador, read on... First off, based on my research on the net in conjunction with my new Lonley Planet guide book, the best place to start off with is Secret Garden Hostel in the Old City. I'll be writing more about it once we get there but it's an award winning little spot with a rooftop terrace and plenty of character. By the way, a really useful site for checking out hostels is www.hostelz.com They have great pictures and info about a plethora of places all over the world. I did a lot of research using them! Another place I recommend ... read more

This was my second time in Puerto Vallarta, with the first being back in August of 1996. I did enjoy that trip very much and so I was glad to come back. I flew from Indianapolis to Atlanta on a Delta Connection EMB-170 and connected to Puerto Vallarta(PVR) on a Delta 737-800, getting first class on that flight!! I enjoyed a nice little lunch and a few gin and tonics before touching down in Mexico 3 1/2 hours later. I took a taxi to the Hotel Emperador, which is where I stayed last time I was in PVR. I find the hotel very relaxing, with a good beach. I just spent the day lounging at the beach and I also visited the local Hard Rock Cafe. I was going to go and visit family in Las ... read more
