One of our favorite Mexican ports is Puerto Vallerta located on the Mexican Riviera. The only way to start the day in PV is with a breakfast at Mr. Creme's which is located at the Marina, just a few blocks and a $6 cab ride north of the cruise pier. The atmosphere, hospitality and exceptionally good cuisine, makes this one of the premier breakfast spots anywhere. After a filling breakfast, it's time to see the town, and boy is there plenty to see! The beaches are normally uncrowded and with some of the finest resorts anywhere the day can be spent just beachcombing and buying crafts from the local vendors. A short cab or bus ride downtown will yield even more opportunity to experience Mexico. A stroll down the Malacon gives a panoramic view of the city and ... read more

Eek - this trip is speeding by. On the map, double click four times and then Sierra Vista is visible. Because it is close to Bisbee, Tombstone (previous trips) and Nogales, it is easy to entertain visitors. Note that the town where my daughter lives is Sierra Vista. Day 5: Today we visited the museum here on the base of Fort Huachucha where we learned that the base was build around 1877 as a place to hold off Geronimo, the Apaches and to protect the settlers. It was the home to the Buffalo Soldiers (the 9th, 10th, 24th and 25th Calvary units) which was one of several black regiments. Imagine they were protecting whites while suffering the most severe discrimination. The base is on the National Historic Registrar due to it's age and history. Like most ... read more

We traveled to Puerto Vallarta from January 17th to January 22nd, 2008. This was our second vacation together to a "tropical" destination (our first was to the island of Oahu back in September 2005 for a week). Truth be told, I was not as excited for this trip as I have been in the past for other places we have traveled to. However, in the end we both decided Puerto Vallarta was a great place to visit and we definitely want to go back again in the future! We began missing the incredible food as soon as we left! Just so you know, I refer to Puerto Vallarta as “PV” throughout this entry. Day 1 (Thursday, January 17th) Our direct flight to PV left Seattle around 09:00. Since PV isn't necessarily the first thing that comes ... read more

Well, I thought the driving trip from Puerta Vallarta to Arizona would be more scenic or eventful. Before we leave, I have inserted a variety of pictures of PV. But since this site does not provide an option for controlling their placement who knows where the pictures will end up. Typing this journal for me is an arduous task as I broke my L. hand little finger in a bicycle accident and now my typing really suffers with misspellings and capitalizations. Fortunately my R. hand knows just where the backspace key is located. Day 1: The first day we logged about 600 miles after leaving about 6 a.m. and stopping driving at 4 p.m. in Los Mochis. The trip was pretty for sure as we traveled up a very windy road to Compostela through jungle terrain ... read more

PERILS OF KATHLEEN - 1-08 Here’s the first travel journal for 2008 - boy it doesn’t seem possible that we are here already. One of the problems of having a birth date that is in an even decade year is that it is very easy to figure out how old you are going to be and I don’t like the count. Colima, Mexico We traveled to Colima specifically to meet the parents of my son’s fiancé, Sandra, who is a lovely Mexican girl. It was a five-hour drive but only about 150 miles from our second home in Puerto Vallarta. The road is two lane and curvy all the way so the going is slow not to mention those famous Mexican topes that cause one to almost stop or risk high centering the car. For those ... read more

Arrival in Puerto Vallarta The flight into Puerto Vallarta went without a hitch. Our excitement during the flight was hard to contain. Looking out the window I could see big fluffy clouds floating next to us, casting shadows on the hills and coast below. The rolling hills covered with green gently give way to the almost clear ocean. There at the bottom of the hills sits the city of Puerto Vallarta. As the plane taxis to a stop the people on the plane start shuffling about and grabbing their belongings that had been stowed during the trip; all seemingly in a hurry. "Yes, I have my passport." I think to myself as I reach for my back pocket to confirm it's presence. You have to be a little thick skinned to get through the airport terminal. ... read more

On our 4th day, we docked at Puerto Vallarta ( our favorite port on the cruise ) and ALL the taxi drivers in the city saw us coming (3 to 4 bucks a head). Because we had spent so much time in PV in the past we walked past the taxi’s and took the local bus (5 pesos / 50 cents a head) across the street down to the main part of town and the Melecon. We love Puerto Vallarta with its old cobble stone streets and all the fabulous art statues along the malecon. You can always find groups of people making huge, beautiful sand sculptures on the beach of everything from animals to the Virgin Mary. You can walk for hours and always see something new. The sky is always filled with more parasailers ... read more

Had a very nice 7 day trip to Puerto Vallarta. Stayed in an all inclusive at Golden Crown Paradise Resort, with a room overlooking the ocean. When arriving, just missed a big downpour, with streets covered in water at least 5 inches deep in some places near our hotel. It was a cloudy week, with the sun comming out at least daily, which was fine, considering how hot and very humid it was. Sure got enough sun anyways. The pool was wonderful, and the food and drinks were excellent, especially the Miami Vice. Went on a trip to the old town for some shopping at the market and enjoyed a trip to the beech of Yelapa and Majahuitas with some snorkeling included. Interesting to see the very poor people living along side the walkway, washing clothes ... read more

One last time from P. Vallarta. We are packing and readying ourselves emotionally for departure from this lovely part of earth. No tears though. We miss our families and friends. We have many, many happy memories from our 10 days here. We have made many friends, from Beni and Miquel at the bar, to Virginia at the Cafe, to Omar at the main desk. We have also made friends from amongst the people staying here. We will always remember the outstanding service here at Casa Velas. I only hope that one day we can come back here and enjoy the food, drink, fellowship and the people who take care of us here. They are some of the most extraordinary people I have ever met. They always go the extra mile. Anyhow, here is a list, in ... read more
