Guatemala My last night in Guatemala was spent watching the Super Chivos (Xela) play football in a classico (derby match). It was a pretty good night, met up with another guy from the treck to Todos Santos (Michael) and headed out for some dinner before the footie followed by a convincing win from Xela. At the game we met a couple of others from the Todos Santos treck and despite a city wide alcohol ban (due to it being election day) managed to find a bar after the game that let us in for a lock in (one of the things I like about Xela). It was the same bar where Katie and I previously enjoyed Sangria on the roof at 5am and again it was a very cool with a few more people we knew ... read more

Time for my first gushing blog. Mexico is absolutely amazing, and frankly I don´t want to leave. In fact, if it weren´t for the fact that we're heading on to some pretty cool places next, I don´t think we would! A bit about San Cristobal in a moment, but first a few random things that I love about the place, in no particular order: 1) Every reasonble sized town that we've visited so far (with the notable exception of the odious Acapulco) has had some kind of fiesta going on. From the Miss Taxco competition (pictures to follow!), to last night's amazing salsa & merengue band (who were dressed rather splendidly in custard yellow game show host jackets) in the main square, they just seem to love free parties. It rules. 2) Food! Food! Food! Even ... read more

San Cristobal is beautiful but we just kept forgetting to take a camera out

San Cristobal de las Casas is another place where I only stopped briefly (one night) because I had other priorities. Unlike Oaxaca, San Cristobal de las Casas comes across as a really cool place and has loads going for it: Pretty, narrow streets with single story well decorated buildings and a relaxed atmosphere. There's loads to do too but like I said I didn't have time so that will have to wait for another time. From San Crist. I took a tourist shuttle to Lake Atitlan in Guatemala to save time and for a change it was a daytime ride. The scenery is spectacular with flat, wide-open plains squeezed right up next to dramatic mountain scenery full of ravines and waterfalls and covered in dense forest/jungle. Fortunately deforestation doesn't seem to have taken as much of ... read more

We have been here now for three months, which means if we want to continue to live in Guatemala legally we had to take a trip to Mexico to renew our visa. Instead of spending 10 hours in one day on chicken buses just to go to the border and back, we decided to take a trip to San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico. Man, are we glad we did. It was a beautiful city! We mostly relaxed and explored the city. Enjoy the photos!... read more

Today was the best day of my adventure so far. We had a guided tour of the indigenous culture of the Chiapas region. Our guide, Cesar, was wonderful. His grandfather was part of one of the villages we visited today and he spent most of his childhood in the village but did his high school education at a Western school. He has worked for large international corporations but said he gave it up because he couldn't live the Western way of life where family life is sacrificed in order to work. The first village had a special religous day but even on normal days they still dress in traditional clothes. Their religions is Catholic Tradicionales, a mixture of Mayan and Catholic. They use saints but not in the same way as Catholics and they sacrifice chickens. ... read more

In order to save the cost of a night´s accomodation and to save town, I decided to make the 12hr journey from Oaxaca to San Cristobal by overnight bus. Now that last time I took an overnight bus (in Thailand) my ankles swelled up to the size of my calves (which was not a very attractive look!) so I was slightly apprehensive. However, the bus was quite empty so I had 2 seats to myself and plenty of room to stretch out. So thankfully, so far, ankles are all in order! Normally when I go on buses I´m the only non-Mexican there, but on this bus it all seemed to be tourists! They even videoed us all sitting down with a camcorder before we left- I presume for security, but strange all the same. I arrived ... read more

We left the scortching heat for the cool air and showers high in the mountains of Chiapas. This town reminds us alot of the highlands of Guatemala because of the cultural and geographic similarities. The food is good and we have even managed a little shopping. Swamped with Italian tourist here though.... read more

Hello all. If you are wondering where the other entries went to on this blog they have disappeared. The server for the site crashed and so have lost alot of people stuff. Just glad we hadnt done that much yet. We are currently in San Cristobal Las Casas, in the mountains of Chiapas, which is in the southern part of mexico, not far from guatemala. It is a beautiful colonial town, with lovely cobbled streets and colourful houses. the main square is a picture, with locals and tourists enjoying music and dancing to the sounds of central america. There are alot of gringos here though, much more than anywhere else, and it is evident that this town is alot richer than elsewhere we have been. Theres even burger kings and dominos pizza! WE are hoping to ... read more
