Day 6 One grows up hearing stories of the Yukon and the Klondike so when we realized that we'd be passing by the Klondike highway we wanted to stop. We found a store selling Klondike bars and bought 2 boxes. Then at the Klondike highway we pulled off, each took a bar and took a family photo. Probably a corny idea but fun anyway ... read more

At last! I've made it to Canada's 9th largest Territory/Province (which is also it's fourth smallest). At 186,000 sq miles and with a population of just 34,000 (75% of whom live in the city of Whitehorse) it's somewhat sparsely populated. I actually crossed the BC/Yukon border two days ago on my way up the Stewart-Cassier highway. I stopped off for a night at the third largest city in the Yukon - Watson Lake (pop. 846!). And then spent last night at a Government Campsite by the side of the Alaska Highway near the town of Teslin. The Yukon is noticeably different to British Columbia. In fact, as I crossed a hill on the way north, there was a surprisingly noticeable change to the scenery. It's far less verdant this far north. There are far fewer varieties ... read more

Also schaut euch das Video ruhig an!!!

We went to Whitehorse in February 2009. We got a great deal on a package from Vancouver, including 2 nights accommodation from Air North. Our visit was primarily to see the Northern Lights, but there happened to be a festival on when we arrived, Rendezvous Festival. Lots of fun and entertainment in the city. Whitehorse is small, and sadly overrun with Starbucks, Walmart, all the usual chains. We went to see the lights on the first night and it was so snowy that we didnt see a thing. It was a bit of a waste of money, so Id definitely recommend hiring a car instead of going on one of the tours. The 2nd day we wandered around the town, and went to the hot springs, which were fantastic. The wind was wild and the snow ... read more

Mushing, was is das?

Day 1, Destination: Whitehorse.... Success!!!! So today is the big day! We wake up at 6:00 and get ready to hit the road. Our goal was to get on the road before 8:00 a.m. It was hectic, but we got the kids up and ready, the dogs went and did their business and we left the hotel just a little after 8:00. We stop at the gas station and fill up the gas cans and head for the weigh station. For those of you who don't know, we have to drug our dog Reggie because when he gets in the car or knows he is going to go bye-bye, he gets really hyper and anxious. The vet gave us some drugs for him, but they really zone him out and we are afraid that he will ... read more

The very next day however, I get my first sketchy hitching experience. Now resolved to hitching all the way to Whitehorse, I am a couple of lifts out of Dawson Creek, where I spend a couple of fruitless hours in the hot sun with my thumb out and insects all around me. I am rapidly losing heart, when a battered red pickup almost runs me off the road as it stops. A First Nation guy with a baseball cap, black shades and stubble opens the door, and I get in. This, it turns out, was a mistake. We set off, and his first words to me are "Got any beer?" "No." I reply. "Anything to smoke?" "Tobacco?" This gets the thumbs up, so I roll him a ciggy. But I am already aware of a problem ... read more

As I previously said, when I left Dawson I wanted to start heading for home in the most direct way. I headed down from Dawson to Whitehorse, where I got back on the Alaska Highway. I ended up putting on over 400 miles and camping on Teslin lake in the Yukon. I was back driving through the Northern Rockies, which is a very beautiful, remote area. It is chock full of mountian goats, bears and moose. Having gone through the Northern Rockies on my way north, I kept thinking these are the Grandpa mountains of the Rockie Mountain Range. They must be older than their southern brethren. They are a little more slope shouldered, yet still a beautiful area with gorgeous lakes between the mountains. The driving is very winding and narrow with big drops on ... read more

We got on the road at 8:30, with about 650 km ahead of us. We were still playing catch up from the whole tire fiasco in Grande Prairie. We had fallen about 80 km short of our intended destination of Liard River provincial park and their hot springs. So the first order of business was to stop at Liard and have a quick soak in the sulphur spring pool. There are 2 pools there and depending which one you go to, and where you sit in it, the water temperature ranges from 40 to 65 C. These are completely natural pools around which the province has built a nice boardwalk and locker room facilities. They also have benches in the pool to allow visitors to sit and enjoy the soothing effects of the water. We stayed ... read more

We spent the last couple of days in Atlin. A Historic Gold Rush town, right on the water. We had the penthouse campsite. Right on the point, overlooking the bay. It was 75 miles of partially paved road. This keeps away most of the tourists. There weere several historic buildings from the early 1900's still in use. We were lucky enough to have dinner at the new, and only, restaurant in town. They had a Prime Rib special taht was some of the best Prime Rib that we have had in a long time. Then we went to a BlueGrass performance at the newly restored Globe Theater. Great musicians, harmony and very funny. We finished the night with a beer at the local tavern. A perfect evening! I am attaching a photo of the sunset at ... read more
