Well we were wrong - we went on at length about the temperatures in the Rockies and how we had never been so cold - well this week we have averaged minus 30 and down to -34 in the mornings - we found that seriously cold and icy enough to turn any exposed body part seriously blue very quickly! However, undeterred and Balaclavas to the ready we ventured out to see yet more lakes - this time with no chance of breaking ice. We were given a demo of the techniques used for ice fishing - it was too cold for us all to stand around and do the real thing - well would you have done? The ice on the lake was over a foot thick and apparently gets to 3 times that depth by ... read more

Good morning from Kyoto! This is your blog update re the trip from Toronto to Whitehorse! Long travel day, but so very comfortable on Icelandic Air. The crew we have are phenomenal!!!!! So beautiful, (and handsome), professional and customer service oriented. Made for a very nice day on the plane. It was nice to get out of the brisk and chilly wind of Toronto and head to the sunny, clear weather in Whitehorse (my friend Blaine thanked us all for bringing the nice weather to Whitehorse....ha ha......you're welcome!!!!) We had an amazing lunch on the plane (yes, it's all about the food for me sometimes........and I know Louise is wanting to know the details!)........I had trout and it was YUM-O!!!! The other choice was lasagne; everyone loved it.........bruscetta, salad, different cake choices (yes, chocolate was one ... read more

Nov 5 to Nov 6 In case you're wondering Where in the World We Are ?....well so are we.....Due to some technical difficulties beyond our control, we've been unable to send you info........but we two techies have finally figured it out, so hopefully here we go: After a whirlwind pre-tour prep, that included visits to many many Shoppers’ Drug Marts, foreign embassies for travel visas, doctors’ offices, dentists, various therapists for body and soul, aestheticians, and beauty parlours, not to mention travel clinics for inoculations against every virus known to man (or woman)…we are finally on our way. We took lots of photos today since this will probably be the best we’ll look all month. Boarding in Toronto was a breeze at the private terminal…Muffins and cappuccino…. no security, and no passport control…. We were even ... read more

It is now 7pm here in Whitehorse and Amanda and I have finished our expedition for the day! After 1800 miles of traveling over the past five days, we are now EXTREMELY excited for those last 112 miles (by land) and 90 or so miles (by sea) before we get back to our humble little apartment in Juneau, Alaska!! It has been such an exciting two days of travel. We left the Traveller's Inn in Dawson Creek on Thursday morning and drove to Muncho Lake. Along the way, we were on Wildlife Watch because the second day of travelling on my own, I saw a little doe, a coyote, a fox, and a bald eagle. The third day, Amanda and I both saw a black bear but not much else. So on the fourth day, Amanda ... read more

After arriving at Skagway on August 13th we got a lift from the airport to the Skagway Hostel. We dropped off our luggage and strolled around town. There were 3 large cruise ships at Skagway so there were lots of tourists in town! We found a good restaurant near the wharf where we ate halibut burgers. After that we saw the "Days of '98 show" about Soapy Smith who was a con man in the early gold rush days of Skagway. The next day we got up early to catch the 8 am train up the White Pass. We had fantastic views and there was a good commentary telling us all about the gold rush days and points of interest. At Fraser in British Columbia we caught a bus. The bus got to Whitehorse at 1pm ... read more

Day 4 July 17 482 miles taveled Out of the grain fields and into the spruce forests. Got onto the Alaskan Highway at Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Spent the night at a campground with a bunch of French Canadian pipeline construction workers. They are finding lots of natural gas in the area and will be piping some it our way. We also met a young couple from Green Bay and a couple of old geezers, like you know who, from Iowa at the camp ground. Also had a slight mishap with the laptop computer. A Geoose set it on a lawn chair when he went to get a beverage. He came back and sat on the computer and it hasn't worked since. Will be using Library services along the way until I find someone to fix ... read more

Whitehorse Beringia Interpretive Center had great exhibits. We watched some movies, participated in some spear throwing instructions and toured the exhibits. It’s a great place to spend an afternoon. Their website is: www.beringia.com. McBride Museum had a lot of displays on the gold rush. They also had Sam McGee’s cabin. He knew Robert Service and that is how his name was used in one of the poems. It was interesting to learn about his life rather than the life that was associated with the name in the poem. We’ll be passing through Whitehorse on our way home, so we deferred some things until that time. Lake Laberge It’s north of Whitehorse and of course we visited it. I’ve learned more about Robert Service, his life and his poems since being in this area. George did a ... read more
