Homeward bound! Nothing on the agenda this morning, so we sleep a bit, hoping to beat our respective colds. And indeed we both feel a bit better this morning. We entertain the idea of trying to slip in one more Hong Kong expeditions in the morning, but there is a light rain with thunder storms forecasted, so we demur. Instead, after breakfast, seeing that the weather has actually cleared up somewhat, I decide to go out solo and explore the neighborhood on foot. The specialty of the area we're in seems to be dried foodstuffs, particularly seafood. They have interesting items like shark's fin, abalone, starfish, seahorse, etc., as well as many kinds of dried mushrooms. I drink in the sights, sounds and smells of the Hong Kong streets, knowing this is my last chance. I ... read more

Vi & I are the first of our group to arrive at the Ottawa airport--which is a first in itself. We meet up with our tour director, Ling, who is there to see us off. Check-in, security and so forth all go smoothly, and we have an uneventful first leg to Toronto's Pearson. There we walk the million miles from Air Canada terminal's D wing to E wing to board our AC direct flight to Beijing. Our plane is a Boeing 777 and it's full. Lots of fun trying to get everyone's carry-ons safely stowed. All the announcements are in English, French and Chinese. Finally we are on our way. I've never experienced a 14-hour flight before. It's long. I make it a rule to get up every three hours or so to restart the circulation. ... read more

Overnight Temperatures dropped to 2 degrees C. overnight but the day has ended up being just perfect. Sun shining and no wind maximum 18 degrees. Ottawa is the capital of Canada and has a population of just under one million. We got an early start to the day but that's where it ended. Made our way to the Park & Ride station but the car park was full. Geoff asked someone about the train line and was told there was no trains in Ottawa and we should just drive the RV downtown - only 20 minutes away... The drive into the city was slow - should have turned around then and found another Park & Ride but we kept going - bad mistake...made it downtown - now the fun begins - to find a park for ... read more

We sadly said goodbye to the 1000 Islands and Tannis and Ken, our hosts at the Riverview Bed and Breakfast. They outdid themselves with pastries, eggs, bacon, fruit, juices and good coffee for breakfast. We enjoyed the other guests, a young couple from Alexandria, VA. I forgot to mention in my blog yesterday that 1000 Island salad dressing originated in this area. The chef at that big castle on an island got the recipe from a local lady and popularized it at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NY. I now have the original recipe and I will make it for my Prescott friends. I've also added the recipe on a photo on the previous blog. By the way, Prescott is a big name here. The town of Prescott is near here and there are lots of stores, ... read more

In the last few days we have driven to and stayed in Montreal and Quebec and today have returned to Ottawa before we fly to Washington DC tomorrow. We stayed in the old part of Montreal and it has great charm - the highlight for me was a visit to the botanical gardens where there was this amazing display of landscape sculptures - see photos to believe me- . I was also impressed with the Montreal metro rail system which we used to get around- very easy to use and quick- $8 for a day pass. French was the dominant language used but there was a lot of English so we got around ok. In Quebec we stayed near the old town or Quebec Vieux as they say - no English is used or included at ... read more
