My second stay coincided with the weekend, so Samantha took the opportunity to take me out and show me her favourite places in the city. On the Friday night that I got in from Toronto we went out to a magazine launch at a coffee shop just down the road from Samantha's place which was converted into a cocktail bar and which hosted a number of local bands. Daytimes during the weekend were spent exploring the city and its museums and galleries - the National Gallery Canada in particular has a fantastic art collection for a town of Ottawa's size. Over the weekend Samantha's boyfriend Mark visited and we all went out for a pizza dinner (including, yes, mozarella cheeseballs served in a shoe) and then to watch a punk show at a local bar that ... read more

At five nights in total, I spent quite a lot of time staying in the nation's capital, Ottawa, at my friend Samantha's flat, but my time was split due to an invitation from Samantha's boyfriend to see a Japanese band I really like (called Boris) in his own city, Toronto. My first two nights in Ottawa were fairly quiet and were spent exploring and recovering after a hectic few days at Osheaga. These photos are from my explorations of the centre of town - it is where the country's parliament is located, so that's what the grandiose 19th-century buildings in the photo album are. The city is beautifully green for a capital, and Samantha and I went on a great bike ride along the Rideau canal there (which turns into an enormous open-air skating rink in ... read more

The most iconic Canadian image is that of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer in scarlet tunic guarding the nation’s most important sites or adding colour to significant events. Yes, “Mounties” do perform these duties, but they are first and foremost Canada’s national police force. A carefully chosen and highly trained elite component from within the Force makes up the world-renowned Musical Ride. Most are non-riders prior to equestrian training with the RCMP; however, once they complete the courses of instruction, they not only become riders but ambassadors of goodwill. Members remain with the Musical Ride for three years, which ensures an annual rotation of approximately one third of them. Today the Musical Ride is performed by a full troop of thirty-two riders and horses, plus the Superintendent in charge. It consists of a variety of ... read more

My love of hot air balloons began when I moved to Ottawa and discovered that one of North America’s largest balloon festivals is held annually from neighbouring Gatineau, QC which, along with Ottawa, makes up Canada’s National Capital Region. The “Festival des Montgolfières” is held there on the weekend preceding Labour Day, Aug 28 to Sept 1 this year. Balloons come in all shapes and sizes from all over Canada and the USA, as well as other countries such as Brazil, Germany, Australia and Japan. Today there are no limits to their colour, design and size, and fanciful shapes adorn our skies every year. I’m going to show you some of the more colourful ones, but first, a bit of history …. The hot air balloon was invented by the Montgolfier brothers, who made the first ... read more

Geo: 45.4214, -75.6919We started out this morning at 8:45 and 65 degrees. And we had a lot on our plate for today. The plan was to see both Montreal and Ottawa, and we did our best. As is often the case, the GPS got a bit confused in the cities and that cost us some precious time. What did we ever do before we had a GPS? Read signs? Yes, we did, but that is easier if the signs are in English. So we decided to head over to the Biodome, which you can see for miles as you drive into the city. When we spotted it, we wondered what it was. It kind of looks like something unfinished, and I thought about the '76 Olympics, when a number of the venues were not completed because ... read more

Camino postscript I spent two days in Santiago waiting to catch my train to Madrid. I am on the train to Madrid now- July 6th - it's about a six hour train ride so here I am blogging again - I will have to throw away this iPad when I get home - this writing is addicting - I am actually enjoying it. I promise this is the last blog - I just need to take care of some unfinished business. So where was I? ..... the Friday night I arrived in Santiago I went to the 7:30 mass - over 1,000 people were in attendance - mostly pilgrims - there are three vantage points coming away from the apse forming a T. There are about 15 priests presiding over the service - 8 will be ... read more

Auch ... read more

We're waiting at the airport waiting for our flight to Montreal. It's been an amazing few days. We not only got to know each other as a team, but we also got to know each other as a group. There was team Bulera and team Busoga going to Uganda. I felt like things were off to a good start when my team leader and I went for a drink to debrief about some of the CTF activities and the up coming trip. We had a bit of a surprise Thursday morning but it all turned out ok. It did put us immediately into support mode. We had a really good group bonding evening on Thursday when we went to the Market together to eat. We had an awesome asian fusion dinner with sushi with a Mexican ... read more
