My name is Derek Christopher Gibson. My life up until this particular time has been rather eventful, and I hope you find it just as interesting as I have. All statements made in these pages are absolutely true, and when possible are backed up by relevant photos or internet links. Please sit back and enjoy the ride… I was born in Nassau, Bahamas on August 26, 1973 to Eric Preston Gibson, and my mother Dorothy Mae Barber. My father passed away on December 28, 2013 and his loss was a great one, not only for my family but for the entire nation of the Bahamas. My father, King Eric Gibson, was the founding member of the most famous calypso band in the islands, called King Eric and His Knights. The original band consisted of my ... read more

The nation's capital. Ottawa is, in our opinion, the prettiest city we've visited so far in Canada. It's small, so everything is within walking distance, very convenient. We started, of course, with the Changing of the Guard. It's supposed to start at 10:00 am on the dot, but it actually started early! We were lucky to be there early to catch a good spot. Here's our video of the ceremony: I went to stand i line for tour tickets of the parliament, so I missed a good part of the ceremony, but I did see enough. It was very impressive! At least I got the tickets! The tours are free, but the available spots are limited. We went to see the locks on the Rideau Canal before our first tour. We saw the locks in action, which ... read more

Today we left Montreal. We had a wonderful time there, but all good things must end, and more good things are to come, right? We didn't drive directly to Ottawa. What would be the fun of that? No, we took a roundabout route through the Laurentian mountains, to the North of Montreal. After about an hour's drive we got to Saint-Sauveur, a little town in the hills surrounded on all sides with ski slopes. It's a beautiful little town but not much to do here in summer. People come in summer to spend a weekend here to get away from life in the city. We continued on to Saint-Adolphe-d'Howard, a little further along the road. But we saw something that looked interesting before we got there. Turned out to be a village yard sale, so we ... read more

Here I am, ready to head off to Ottawa. Upon my arrival imaging my happiness at being able to dispose of this dresser. The same dresser whose drawers have never closed very well. Junking can have its rewards. And today the moving van arrived. We are loading up today.... read more

Staying our last night in Ottawa in the Comfort Inn. It turns out that we are right opposite the hotel that I stayed in on my first night in Ottawa, so many years ago. For the Chimo, what comes around is all around (Photo 1). Last dinner in Ottawa is the Pili Pili (Photo 2). We are all going to miss this newest attraction. The chicken is to die for: all the other customers agree (Photo 3).... read more

When planning this trip, I really wanted to visit Ottawa and Parliament Hill. I've seen photos, which are stunning. I didn't really prepare the boys for what they might see. We drove in on Wellington, which passes many of the buildings. The boys were very impressed, thinking these were the coolest buildings they had ever seen. They couldn't wait to get up close and personal. After finding parking, we did just that. We started in front of Parliament, wandering up and then back to get a decent photo. The other side, though, has the coolest part, the Library. It was the only portion of the original building that didn't burn in 1916, because an employee thought quickly to close the steel doors. We walked along the cliff edge looking at statues of various dignitaries. I recognized ... read more

After a Winter that brought only moderate snowfall, but unspeakable cold that lasted far beyond its “Best Before Date”, Spring finally arrived in Ottawa in early May. That was, fortunately, just in time for the start of the Tulip Festival, which saw over three million tulips planted in half a dozen selected locations throughout the National Capital Region (Ottawa ON and Gatineau QC), plus many others that are not part of the “official” plan. This is now the site of North America’s largest annual tulip festival, which attracts about half a million visitors over ten days to view the flowers and participate in a wide variety of activities. For more information go to: http://tulipfestival.ca/. Add to that a multitude of flowering crabapple and other trees, and you have a sudden but long overdue outburst of colour ... read more

So, I decided that I am going to try out this whole travel blogging thing, so that everyone at home can see what I am up to on my trips! I apologize if my blog sucks, this is my first time ever blogging. If you think it sucks, then I guess don't read it haha. I will also be attaching pictures to my blogs, so make sure you scroll all the way down to see all of them. Okay, here it goes! Just to give a little bit of background information, this summer I was accepted to do a student internship with Veterinarians Without Borders. I will be in Uganda, Africa for eleven weeks, working on the Goat Pass-On Project. I will be working with two other vet students, Sarah (a classmate) and Lena (a vet ... read more

It's 23.08 on the 30th April. We're well on our way to bring out here for 2 months out of 5. We've had a pretty standard last few days here at The Winchelsea, so I doubt this entry will be too long. We got up on Tuesday for breakfast and headed straight out into the garden to get to work tidying the the place up. Matt and I weeded the beds while Rosie and Kate undertook the exciting task of sorting wood chips from leaves. We carried on with this until lunch, then continued in much the same way in the afternoon - until around 3.30. Tuesday must have been a particularly unremarkable day as I can't remember much more than this - the last few days have taken such a similar form they begin to ... read more
