Today we left Montreal. We had a wonderful time there, but all good things must end, and more good things are to come, right?
We didn't drive directly to Ottawa. What would be the fun of that? No, we took a roundabout route through the Laurentian mountains, to the North of Montreal. After about an hour's drive we got to Saint-Sauveur, a little town in the hills surrounded on all sides with ski slopes. It's a beautiful little town but not much to do here in summer. People come in summer to spend a weekend here to get away from life in the city. We continued on to Saint-Adolphe-d'Howard, a little further along the road. But we saw something that looked interesting before we got there. Turned out to be a village yard sale, so we had a look at how the local folk recycle all sorts of stuff by selling them to each other. Everything from old axes and snowshoes to bras and books.
Saint-Adolphe-d'Howard is another small town but this one has a lakeshore. We found a nice spot to stop and stretch on the shore. There was a small floating dock, a small park with some
chairs by the water and a public bathroom. Never underestimate public bathrooms, especially clean ones! Anyway, we sat and had a rest, the kids dipped in the water a bit, got their feet wet while we watched folks trying to water ski. Some did pretty well!
By now it was getting on towards lunchtime, so we continued towards Mont-Tremblant, where I saw a camping spot on the map and thought it would be a good place for a picnic. It was packed with campers, not a free spot to be found, so we gave up and went to find a better place.
We tried a little beach we saw from the road at Brebeuf, a little further down the road, but they charge an exorbitant price just to sit on the sand! Ridiculous!
We tried further on. And we were lucky we did, too. Along the way a deer crossed the road ahead and I stopped on the shoulder for a photo-op. Gilat and Ethan got out and followed the deer for a bit and got some good shots. Our next order is for a moose.
We saw a sign for picnic tables and followed that
to Amherst. The picnic tables were in a little grassy area right next to the road, but good enough for us. We were hungry. We saw someone stop next to a small shed nearby and bring empty bottles inside, so we went exploring. Inside was a little spring, and people come and fill up there. The guy we saw soon pulled a large garbage bag full of empty bottles from his car! We also filled up and had a drink. Delicious, cool water. More people came by with bottles and jugs, even a group of bikers stopped their harleys to fill up.
So, we had our chicken with fresh spring water, then went on our way to Ottawa, another hour and a half easy drive away.
We found the hotel easily, then contacted Gaye and parked our car at her place (parking is far from free at the hotel!)
It was lovely seeing Gaye and meeting Bob, good people! They have plans with their grand children for tomorrow, but we planned to have dinner with them tomorrow evening, and maybe Gaye will show us around on Monday before we leave Ottawa. Looking forward to it!
Thus endeth another day in Canada.
