The smith trio
My last evening in Alberta, my bros and I. So, I decided that I am going to try out this whole travel blogging thing, so that everyone at home can see what I am up to on my trips! I apologize if my blog sucks, this is my first time ever blogging. If you think it sucks, then I guess don't read it haha. I will also be attaching pictures to my blogs, so make sure you scroll all the way down to see all of them.
Okay, here it goes! Just to give a little bit of background information, this summer I was accepted to do a student internship with Veterinarians Without Borders. I will be in Uganda, Africa for eleven weeks, working on the Goat Pass-On Project. I will be working with two other vet students, Sarah (a classmate) and Lena (a vet student from Montreal). The general idea of the project is to empower impoverished women, mostly widows, by helping them become sustainable goat farmers. I will get into more details of the project as the summer goes on, but basically my role is to work with groups of rural women to help them solve any problems they are having with their goats and
provide resources such as vaccinations and training on goat husbandry. I am really looking forward to the summer!
My adventure began on May 7th at three in the morning. I spent my last evening in Alberta hanging out with my family. We went out to the Keg for a "going away" dinner. I got the New York Steak and Crab legs, which was delicious. My parents wanted to treat me to a good meal before I left, because I have heard the food in Uganda is nothing to rave about. I have a suspicion they aren't going to have Alberta beef quality steaks in Uganda. After supper I said goodbye to my mom (we both shed a couple tears), and then my dad, brothers and I went out to a movie. We saw the new Avengers, which I definitely recommend. Thor is so dreamy, there is just something about man buns and big hammers. I got a couple hours of sleep at my brother's house and then my dad drove me to the airport in the middle of the night. Peace out Alberta! See you in August!
My trip had a bit of a
rough start. I threw up on both of my flights just as we were landing, it was not pleasant, especially since the second puke bag had a hole in it. Needless to say, I will need to wash my jacket and jeans. 😞
The first part of my trip involves a week in Ottawa, which is cool, since I have never been here. As student interns we have to participate in pre-departure training to prepare us for our trip. VWB (Vets Without Borders) partners with Cuso International for the training. It was very helpful and actually quite fun. Ottawa is a neat city. It has a lot of character and history to it. Our hotel is right downtown, so me and two other vet students, Maggie and Sarifa (both are from U of C and on the Kenya project), spent a lot of time walking around, checking out the Rideau Canal and Parliament building.
My second night in Ottawa, a bunch of us from training went to Dows Lake to watch the fireworks for the annual Tulip Festival. The fireworks were great. As I was standing up, I heard a thud, looked down and

Just running from some terrifying t-rex. could see the screen of my iPhone shining between the cracks in the dock. My phone was sinking to the bottom of the lake and there was absolutely nothing I could do! Rest in Peace iPhone. I'm actually not even that upset, I just wish I had backed up my pictures. I am not going to bother getting a new phone until I am back in Canada. I think it will be nice to be a bit disconnected for the summer. At least now I don't have to worry about my phone getting stolen or broken. Lol.
Yesterday was our last day of training. I said my goodbyes to everyone and just hung out in my hotel room for the rest of the evening. My surface was being really slow (perfect timing of course), so today I took it to a Staples. The tech was a saint and did everything within his power to have my surface fixed before my trip. He was so worried about my safety and wanted me to send him some pictures, so I will have to make sure to do that. My surface is working great again. 😊 I spent a few

This is how excited I am to be leaving for Uganda in less than an hour. hours at the Museum of Nature, which was super cool. They had an "animal inside out" exhibit, which was basically a flashback to anatomy lab, but way more interesting.
I am now at the airport, just waiting for my flight. I can't believe I am actually going to Africa! I can hardly contain my excitement. I better put my computer away and get ready for boarding. Goodbye Canada! See you later! <3
