I am always sad when I leave my mother in Ireland and again some tears were shed as we made our way to Singapore and then to home. I was surprised at the extent of development in Singapore but Helen had told me about the efficient public transport system- SMRT- and (as usual) she was right - it was the most efficient of all systems we had encountered across over 10 major cities ( although Washington Dc was pretty god as well) - we got a two day pass for $S 16 and had a smart card style access to trains, light rail and buses across the City- very good coverage. We visited the Jerong Bird Show, the National Orchid Garden, Sentosa Island and Mount baker National Park and look out, the Gardens at the Bay, ... read more

It has been all about meeting people and having cups of tea- it is never a holiday when you visit your place of birth after many years but we did have a good time. The first three days in Ireland were around Dublin and we went into the city and also spent time with my mother - Annie-. For the next four days we went down the country and visited my brother in Kilarney as well as visiting Galway, Mayo and touring around what is called Connemara- we got hit by some bad weather and the soft rain that seems to fall in the west of Ireland. For the last three we went back to Dublin - went to my mother's belated 77th birthday which was attended by 3 of her five sons and prepared for ... read more

The last few days have been very mixed in terms of experiences and activities. I caught up with my younger brother Vinny and his wife Lisa and family in Tallahassee and we had a good time - had not seen them for over 10 years - too long. We traveled a little bit in Tallahassee which is a small town in Florida which happens to be the state capital- very hot and humid there but the houses have good air conditioning. We were sad to leave Vinny and Lisa but they looked after us very well- a highlight of our holiday from a people perspective. We drove to Orlando Disney world and booked into a Disney Caribbean apartments. We went to Epcot Disney park yesterday which was good with plenty of rides, international villages and plenty ... read more

Washington DC as the US capital has lots of government buildings, national institutions and shrines- it has some similarities to Canberra but on a bigger scale. The highlight for me was attending the 50th anniversary of the Martin Luther King's march and famous speech - President Obama spoke at the ceremony as did former presidents Clinton and Bush- I was there from 12 noon to 3 pm along with 100,000 people - I was about 1 mile away from where Obama spoke on the steps of the Lincoln memorial but there were big screens and speakers about the place - it is interesting that the event was co-ordinated by the National Parks and Special Services- I bought a tee shirt as a memento of the occasion. I also visited the various memorials in Washington and traveled ... read more

In the last few days we have driven to and stayed in Montreal and Quebec and today have returned to Ottawa before we fly to Washington DC tomorrow. We stayed in the old part of Montreal and it has great charm - the highlight for me was a visit to the botanical gardens where there was this amazing display of landscape sculptures - see photos to believe me- . I was also impressed with the Montreal metro rail system which we used to get around- very easy to use and quick- $8 for a day pass. French was the dominant language used but there was a lot of English so we got around ok. In Quebec we stayed near the old town or Quebec Vieux as they say - no English is used or included at ... read more

In the last few days we have traveled to Toronto and then to Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Toronto is the largest city in Canada located on Lake Ontario with a population of almost 3 million people - it is a very busy city with buildings of condominiums taking place all over the place- it has the vibrancy and buss of a large city as well as the signs of homelessness and street vandalism that are inevitable. Toronto provided a base for us to visit Niagara Falls- one of the 7 natural wonders of the world - it truly is. The other highlight was a visit to a shoe gallery in downtown Toronto- over 13,000 shoe displays, the history of footwear across the world and a whole floor dedicated to sneakers- Nike Air Jordans being the ... read more

We have just completed five days visiting some of the most scenic( and expensive) places in Canada- Lake Louise- what a view of a lake and glacier from our bed room window-, Jasper, Banff and the Sulphur Mountain gondola and Calgary with its sky walks which are land bridges that link buildings that mean that people do not have to venture our when it gets cold ( up to -40/50 F) in the winter and an indoor tropical garden on level 4 of one of its bigger shopping areas . All very scenic, particularly the Lake Louise and the Columbia snow fields but I am pleased to move on a move to the next stage of our holiday which is 10 days driving around eastern Canada- Toronto,Ottawa,Montreal and Quebec. Since I lasted updated you I have ... read more

Over the last few days we have traveled by special train from Vancouver to Jasper staying one night in a town called Kamloops. The train was a double decker with a clear see through roof and the mountainous scenery was very spectacular. the service on the train was fabulous and I will need to run off many calories given the quality and quantity of the food- the staff on the train were great too- got customer service down pat. We have stayed in the Jasper lodge hotel for the last two days and tomorrow head off to walk on a glacier in Banff- life continues to be tough. Will talk again in a few days and update you how I am going with my american/Canadian beer drinking - some photos included to cover the activities. Take ... read more

Driving from town to town and visiting the wilderness in Alaska has been good. We have stopped at Anchorage, Talkettan, De Nali and Fairbanks. Anchorage is the biggest town with a population in excess of 150,000- the other towns are much smaller though swell up during the summer tourist season. The highlight of the trip in Alaska has been the wilderness tour of De Nali national park - some 6 million acres of wilderness - we saw moose, brown bear, golden eagle and caribou. We were also some of the lucky few to see the peaks of Mount McKinley, the highest mountain in North America at 20,320 feet. Today we went on a river boat tour of the Chekna river in Fairbanks and visited an old automobile museum- we are flying out tomorrow back to Vancouver ... read more
