I don't think Ian mentioned in his blog yesterday that the Capital Hill Hotel & Suites felt so sorry for us drowned rats that they gave us a complimentary upgrade to a king suite with soaker tub. Did we ever make use of that tub. Baths, laundry, more baths. Thank you Capital Hill ! We love Ottawa! Why haven't we been here before now. Truly a beautiful city, apparently the 3rd cleanest in the world,1 million people, 100,000 civil servants, 75% working in Ottawa, 25% across the river in Gatineau QC. Learned all this on the hop on hop off double decker bus tour this morning! This is such a great way to see any city, especially for the first time there. The one and a half tour took us past 24 Sussex Drive where we ... read more

Today we are leaving North Bay traveling to Ottawa. Its time again to tell you about what I have learned on this trip. First I have learned that in Ontario just because it was hot yesterday does not mean anything today. I have also been told that it is always windy here. They say that in western Ontario it always blows from the west. In northern Ontario it always blows from the north. In eastern Ontario it always blows from the east. What that tells me is Toronto really sucks. We are not going there. Mostly because we have already been to the geographical centre of North America in Rugby North Dakota. We woke up to rain and cold this morning. They are saying it is minus two with the wind chill. It is about 350 ... read more

Preparing for that flight on March 17th means getting fit and also bringing weight down to a minimum. With so many kilometers to do each day keeping pack weight down is well worth the effort. I have started by listing absolutly everything i will have with me and targetted for a skin out weight of 8Kgs excluding footwear. So far I have only come down to 8,476 gms but that is getting close. Every gram off my back willmake walking easier and more fun. With an included tent, sleeping bac and tiny cookset it is a tight squeeze. The next big thing will be to walk more each day plus some long walks each week. What with Canadian weather and going off to Mexico for a month it will be a challenge but can be done. ... read more

Off on a 21-day cruise around South America, starting from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on the east side, around the tip of the continent, and ending in Santiago, Chile on the west side. We meet our travelling companions, Claudette and Jim, at the Ottawa airport. By the time we have checked in and passed through US customs, our flight out of Ottawa (United Airways), which was supposed to leave at 7:10 pm, is delayed to 8:30 because of mechanical issues. This means that we have no hope of making our connecting flight in Washington. The UA agent figures out an alternative route for us--Air Canada to Toronto and then another AC flight to Sao Paulo, but it is a very tight schedule. We have to recollect our baggage, exit the secure area, recheck in, pass through ... read more

The plan is to have the whole pack and worn gear down to under 9Kg. As ultralight as possible to make the walking easier and much less stresful. While I will stay mostly in Minshukos or temples I hope to camp out as much as is convenient as it is a good way to meet people and get a great rest. The Big Three So the big three items are already decided - tiny tent, mec down sleeping bag and Osprey Talon 44 pack. I just sleep so much better with a pillow so I will bring the little Thermarest one I have. NeoAir pad for comfort. I had great results with it in the Yukon and it weighs almost nothing. Clothes Add the minimal layered clothing of three base layers, two mids and one warm ... read more

After a year of planning and research, the trip is only 5 days away. Apparently more of my effort and planning should have gone into how to pack everything efficiently, as I'm having some difficulties fitting one month's worth of equipment into my 'supposedly' large enough backpack. The logistical challenges created by attempting Kilimanjaro in the middle of an African trek may have been a little over-zealous - or maybe I need to learn to pack/bring less stuff. Also, cutting it a little closer than Anne would have liked, we finally received confirmation of our Rwandan visas and finalized our remaining hotel/shuttle. The visas for Kenya and Tanzania will be acquired on arrival which should present some interesting learning opportunities regarding my haggling skills. Below is a map of the major travel legs for the trip: ... read more

We've been neglecting the blog since getting to Ottawa! Blame it on a nasty cold I started to come down with on Tuesday. I've spent much of the last three days sleeping, trying to get on top of it. And today Roberta reports a scratchy throat, dashing our hopes that she might escape catching this from me. We stayed with good friends John and Maggie until Thursday morning. It was hard to leave their comfortable digs and cosy friendship! However, I managed to leave my knitting bag behind there (horrors!) so we'll be scheduling a rematch before we leave Ottawa. Thursday afternoon we spent with Nora Hammell at her new lake home on White Lake -- gorgeous! We are still amid the most beautiful fall folliage here. Then back to our hostel at friends' Carmen and ... read more

We were up at the crack of dawn this morning (actually the dawn had not yet cracked) to cach the train from Quebec City to Ottawa. This actually consisted of two trains. The first, from Quebec City to Montreal was very impressive! Instead of the usual four seats across, it had only three, two on one side and one on the other. The overhead baggage compartments were smaller than normal, but faced the rear of the car so they were accessible without having to stand up and get into the aisle. There was a large table with each seat, so I was able to work on my computer the whole trip, which naturally went very fast since I was so busily occupied! We had just enough time in Montreal between trains to grab some breakfast. The ... read more

My first post. Its more of a trial really, just to see that I can figure out how to work blog technology... Anyway, I am down to my last few errands: get yellow fever vaccination photocopy, photocopy passports and what-not, flip flops, traveller's checks, hiking pants and myabe one last stick of deoderant? Still working on downloading music but it sure can take a while to get and entire discography! Hopefully this sends Soph and Dad a notification.... read more
