Odometer: 36360km This was an ordinary driving day. The country from Halifax to the Canso Causeway was mostly forested with some open farming near Antigonish. I liked the feel of Antigonish and thought the St. Francis Xavier University campus was wonderful. I am planning on driving along the coast on the old road around here on my way back and I'll have a closer look then. Once I reached Cape Breton the countryside changed. It was very enjoyable, with lots of views over a broken forest and lakes. Driving along Bras d'Or Lake was especially nice. There are lots of motorcycles here and most of them have Quebec license plates. I remember Sylvain telling me that all the big manufacturing and construction companies in Quebec shutdown for the same three week period so that must be ... read more

July19, 20, 2006. It was to be a 14 hour ferry ride that turned into 18 hours, one long day. We are back to N. Sydney, Nova Scotia. The mail, in the Maritimes and Atlantic Canada, has not been great, last year in Alberta and British Columbia it was more efficient. Oh well, we don’t need anything and it all can wait. July 21, 2006. N. Sydney to Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. The fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site of Canada, was once a busy fortified seaport. From its founding by the French in1713 to its abandonment by the British in 1768, Louisbourg was a place of significance in the Franco-British struggle fore empire. The history goes like this, the French founded Louisbourg, (no mention of the natives that lived here forever),in 1713 and established a ... read more

I planned this as a day trip out from Halifax. I went to Lunenburg first. When I arrived in this well known ship building town and the present home to Bluenose II of course I went to the railway museum and then spent time listening to the organist in the Zion Evangelican Luthern Church. Alright, don't consider me too daft. When I arrived I was actually just biding my time. The cloud cover was heavy and I wanted to wait for brighter light before going to the waterfront with my camera. At the museum I learned a lot about the railways in Nova Scotia. I also was treated to a rather quirky presentation of the way railway operation was in the province before most of the tracks were ripped up. This presentation was done witha model ... read more

So much to do and so little time. I am determined to come away from Halifax with not only some understanding of the town, but also an understanding of how I felt about it. Is it a place I would like to visit again? What does it do for me inside? Are the people here really different from other cities in Canada? Does it excite me photgraphically? Whew, a pretty tall order for two and half days, but you need to start somewhere. There were funny sensations going on inside as I walked the sometimes steep streets. With the moist air, fog, old buildings, university right downtown, old apartment buildings fairly well maintained, lots of students wandering around, and a collection of strange characters, it created a feeling like the South Kensington area of London did ... read more

On the road at 7am after finally getting to sleep around 2am and then wakened by the crows and gulls at 5:30. That is it, no more weekend camping. The Tim's at Middleton beckoned me for breakfast, so I gave in. "You'll not be findin' any fancy coffee shops in this valley. Tim's is the best around here. You'll always see the bikes there too." And that was how the motorcycling travel agent on the parking lot of Tim's in Digby filled me in on where to go for coffee. At the counter ahead of me was a representative of a similar group that created by little hell-in-a-tent last night. A guy and a girl had been sent for coffee for a group who were too hung over to get up. I knew about this because ... read more

I could have missed the ferry to Nova Scotia this morning, but I didn't. Last night, while watching TV, I noticed the time on clock in my room had a different time from my watch. I glanced at it from time to time, but finally the geek in me took over and I decided to set it to the proper time. For some reason, rather than just set it to my watch, I checked the time on the weather channel. Surprise - I was in a new time zone and didn't realize it. My watch was wrong. Thank goodness I discover that oversight. The undesired consequence for me would have been another day in St. John. While waiting for the ferry, I met a couple of other motorcyclists, Sylvain and Manon, from the Eastern Townships of ... read more

My Grand Tour of Canada has begun! Or my Cross-Canadian Caper has begun, I don't know what to call it yet. My goal is t go from Halifax to Victoria all across the vast expanse of Canada. Part of the way my best Canadian Friend Ever Horty will join me. The rest of the way I will be by myself. I start off in Halifax after flying the night before. I've also received a huge monstrosity of a car to drive since it was the only one available. Poor me. Wish me luck! Started the morning off at Peggy's Cove and it is already one of my favorite places on Earth! The weather started off very murky and Morrissey-ish but then got all bright and sunny by noon. Its a great place to visit and the ... read more

We have another ferry crossing today from North Sydney to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. Our ferry was to leave at 12:30 PM and we need to be in line at least one hour ahead of time. Well we arrived early and waited, this is the first time the ferry has be late for us, but I am sure what with weather conditions it must happen from time to time. This will be a six hour trip and we lose ½ an hour when we get to Newfoundland. We are in the middle of the far north of the Atlantic Ocean and I am typing and receiving wireless internet connection. By the magic of technology we are able to send pictures and text. Is that amazing or what? ... read more

Ingonish Beach is our first stop, not a long beach but lots of pretty pink round stones. We decided to have brunch at the Keltic Lodge, and it was grand. As we drove around the Cabot Trail, we are now on the Atlantic side of Cape Breton and the views are incredibly beautiful. The Gaelic/Keltic School, in St. Ann’s, was our next stop. During the summer months, kids come and learn Gaelic, step dancing, bag pipes and more of the history and tradition of the Scottish folks. It is quite an elaborate place. Sydney Information Center, helped us figure out the ferry schedule and gave us the name of a campground, with directions for the grocery store, etc. A huge fiddle, the symbol of the Scotts love of music and dance, is on display in ... read more
