This is the 12th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Tue 15 Aug 06 Finished the Cabot Trail. I can’t put it in words. The pictures say it all. Man that takes a long time to go around. I think I was on the trail for 8 hours, the road was in good condition. Its just awesome. I had the best seafood chowder ever at a local café, followed by a platter of scallops and chips. Even the McDonalds here offers the ‘McLobster’. Around every corner I kept expecting to see Moby Dicks ‘Try Pots' inn. People were spotting whales from the cliffs. In the afternoon the ... read more

This is the 11th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 MON 14AUG06 I got up at 7AM this morning and was packing the bike by 7:30. When I went outside there was a pile of towels on my handrail at the steps. As I am packing up the maid came over to say she had left those rags there for me to use to wipe off the bike if I wanted to. Effie was in sad shape. But I thought that was such a neat thing to do, I have never had a motel offer me rags for the bike before. I wet one of the towels ... read more

Day 93: Monday 7th. August 2006: Up early for the early flight to Halifax - no brekky today - queue for the flight OK but beeped when I went through the scan, but this time both of us had to have the full body check and bag check. Before I go through a scan I remove all my jewellery, coat, shoes etc. as I always get body searched due to my knee replacement pieces setting off the alarms. Also my backpack and camera bag get scanned and wiped for explosives - fun isn’t it!!! Vera not used to this invasion. Never mind - it was onto this great little jet with the most comfortable seats one could hope for with a good flight to Halifax. We caught the airporter bus to town going via many suburbs ... read more

Kejimkujik to Annapolis Royal to Port Royal to Digby Neck We took off early morning to hike the Hemlocks and Hardwood Trail. It was a lovely trail with hemlocks at different stages of growth. It seems a fire destroyed lots of this area but they are coming back. We saw hemlocks that were 400 years old!! I couldn’t see the tops. It was a loop trail and the bugs were out and about. This time of year I guess we can expect the buggies. Bob enjoys history and geologic sites. I do too, but in moderation. I think I have learned more about Canadian history than I know about American history. At any rate, here we are at Annapolis Royal, yet another Historic Site. Before I get there…let me tell you, the French come and ... read more

LOCATION: Lunenburg to Kejimkujik National We stayed at Jeremy’s Bay Campground, (no services), but natural campsites with lots of trees and quiet. The Mi’maq were the original inhabitants of this area. Kejimkuji (Keji) is the first national park of Canada designated a national historic site, which is based on the Mi’maq heritage. On our first hike, the Slapstick Trail, we came across a white tailed deer just walking along, I don’t think I have ever seen a deer with a tail. We took this trail out to Jake’s Landing and rented kayaks. This area is best seen from a canoe or kayak. It was a beautiful day and lots of people were out and about after, all the rain we have had. We enjoyed our paddle and the sunshine. Many of the walking trails are also ... read more

Atlantic Canada’s most photographed site is Peggy’s Cove. With the houses of this tiny village clinging to the weathered hillside at the edge of Margaret’s Bay, the Atlantic beats against the granite bouldered coast. The lighthouse is perched on 400 million year old granite, it also serves as a post office in the summer. Even with the clouds and showers there are lots of sightseers climbing on the rocks and snapping photos. Lunenburg is our next stop. It is a wooden-ship kind of town honored as a UNESCO world heritage site. It is one rainy day, as we get into Lunenburg. It is a small touristy town with lots of gift shops and of course the pier with the Bluenose II. History just drips from the old houses along the streets. Once the rain passed ... read more

Halifax it the world’s second largest natural harbor and the world’s deepest natural harbor, is also the capital of Nova Scotia. The French learned about this area from the Mi”Kmaq (mic -mak) Native Indians, but it was the Brits who saw the site’s potential and settled the area in 1749. We drove into Halifax, parked the Bothan at the pier and took off on our bikes. It being Sunday AM it was relatively easy to get the layout of the land. Unfortunately most shops are closed on Sunday. The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site was on our list of places to visit. Little did we know today was the culminating festivities of a week long celebration of 100 years since the British left Canada and the Dominion of Canada took over. The first event was ... read more

Odometer: 36741km The Cabot Trail displayed everything promised. Vista after vista caused me to quietly exclaim inside my helmet. Seemingly organized rocky shores interspersed with narrow, sandy beaches met my expectations of what this coastline would be like. Inland there were lush trees giving way to scrub spuce and other hearty bushes reaching down to the shore. The road was a bit of an engineering wonder. Sometimes cutting through rocky outcroppings, sometimes twisting and climbing on the edge of a steep hill, and sometimes winding haphazardly along the coastline, it always offerred motorcycle riding fun. The tough part was handling the rough road. Although there were some new parts that had been recently paved, many of the older, twisty stretches had surpise potholes and bumps, all of which forced me to ride without taking the liberty ... read more
