We pushed thru hard from Toronto into the east. We had a quick visit with Zac and Lindsay in Ottawa for a game of scrabble and some lunch. Can't help but to mention that dub. came our on top (better luck next time, guys). We drove the night thru Quebec and New Brunswick to make Nova Scotia around breakfast on the 11th. We headed almost straight to the Nish where we spent the duration at Ev's: 77 Pleasant. Special thanks to the crew for putting up with us, and to Barrie for the extended use of her bed. We ran with the team, made our rounds and frequented the night scene. A shout out to Fran and Coleen's for the burgers and pie (the pie was appreciated again for breakfast!). Rob's thinking he might apply now ... read more

As the semester wound down and people began to relax after the stress of exams it soon became clear as reality set in that most of us would be saying goodbye to each other. So for a few days we all did our best to ignore the inevitable and have fun (read drinking) before having to say our farewells. I was definitely lucky to have had such an amazing group of friends over the first semester here at Mcgill University in Montreal. It was with a certain amount of relief then that Jacqui and I were on our own and getting away from Montreal. We were off to Nova Scotia to visit one of her friends, Halina. We left on the train at about 18:30 on what would prove to be a pretty long journey. The ... read more

We've gone from Old Scotland to New Scotland in our last few blogs. This trip was to Nova Scotia or New Scotland, on the East Coast of Canada. The last time we both came here was nearly 2 years ago before we left on our trip. This time no trip sadly but good to visit. Before we flew to Halifax we made a quick pit-stop in Toronto. Our good friend Sudha's (whose family we visited in India last year) brother was marrying his lovely fiance Sherrie. We were lucky enough to be invited. We arrived in Toronto early Saturday morning after getting a lovely Harmony red-eye flight from Vancouver. So, after no sleep and a drive around Toronto on the look-out for wedding presents we arrived at our friend Ben and Jen's house late morning. We ... read more

The drive from Halifax to the link to Cape Breton is not hugely exciting so we added our own excitement by first getting lost on our way out of Halifax and then by missing the exit for Truro, where we intended to have breakfast. After Truro, the highway meets the Trans-Canada at a "T" and we exited at the first town after that. The town really only had a convenience store, so they recommended going 5 minutes down the road... to Truro! We ended up with a really yummy breakfast at a diner attached to a motel - and it was super cheap, about $3 per person! Once on Cape Breton, we headed east to Isle Madeleine. There is a reknowned candy store here that my boss had raved about. They make their own candies and ... read more

Travel MapA quick stop in Halifax before taking off for Cape Breton Island. We stayed at the Westin on a priceline bid that was cheaper than the best 3.5* hotel rate we could find. The hotel was nice and the beds were "heavenly". Dave had great luck getting suggestions from the concierge, who pointed us to the Comfy Corner Cafe for a great breakfast, and The Sweet Basil Bistro for a wonderful dinner. He also pointed us to a great jazz bar for after dinner, but I forget the name.... read more

We love Halifax! We've been here three days and have been enjoying it very much. We're staying at the Marriott on the waterfront which is very convenient because there is a ped-way which connects you to lots of other buildings. It's great because if the weather is bad it provides an alternative route to get about. We made sure to stop and shop in the Historic Properties Market which is just next door to our hotel. There are lots of shops and lots of food vendors with all sorts of treats. We visited the Citadel again (we were here on our last trip); we love to hear the pipers and to hear the daily cannon fire at 12 noon. We found a great little restaurant called the Apple Barrel and we took Alexander Keith's Brewery Tour ... read more
