Early morning today. Got on the road around 3:30AM to drop the car by the airport. Robyn and I are on our way up to Nova Scotia to visit her Aunt Chrissy and research the Mic’mak/Acadia film. A long layover in DC became an even longer one when the plane to Halifax was delayed. We arrived around 10:30PM, got some Japanese food and went to bed. Nova Scotia is exciting. Halifax reminds me of Seattle.... read more

Now that we have internet access again I feel like I need to use it so a short odds and ends message. We have had clam chowder, fish chowder and seafood chowder in several places along the way from Maine on into Canada. All have been delicious and fun to taste different ones. All of the chowders we have had have been of a broth soup consistency, much thinner than traditional New England chowder, but very good. We both feel we have had a 2 year supply of coleslaw and french fries. It seems like most fish meals you order come with those 2 items. You know you have had too many fries when you start comparing them among restaurants as you would with steak or a glass of wine. We have been expecting more "traditional" ... read more

Our trip saga is almost a weather saga. The first day in Grand Pre , Nova Scotia, it was in the mid 60's and rainy. We went to the public library for some internet work. We then drove to Cape Split, a narrow arm of land into the Bay of Fundy, but by the time we got there it was so foggy you could barely see anything. Still an interesting drive. We ended the day with a walk through the Acadia University campus and gardens and a visit to a local winery. The next day we got up to cool, but potentially only partly cloudy skies. Decided to drive to Freeport on Long Island for a whale watching trip. Weather good on the way, but when we arrived it was cloudy, we were the only ... read more

This will be a long entry. We have been communication challenged. Something happened to our voice mail at home and we can't access it. I should be able to access voice mail on my cell phone, but can no longer use the shortcut I established since we are out of the US. I don't have the instruction book with me and don't have complete number so can't access that voice mail either. We have also had difficulties finding campgrounds with wi-fi so we are basically incommunicado. Since our last entry we have discovered a number of things. 1) Gray skies don't always mean rain. Today they do. We have had a lot of days that start out cloudy, clear up and then cloud up again, but no rain. This seems to be the pattern in ... read more

It felt good leaving Bar Harbor riding through this exciting village. I had a lot of great fun here with the people and the places I visited. It also felt good to surpass 3000 miles as I left Mount Desert Island and turned eastward to Canada; so close I could taste it. Today was cool and cloudy and the wind was at my back to push me along 80 miles into Machias. The hills continued but I powered through them getting used to this new coastal landscape. This part of Maine called ‘Down East Maine’ was very rural and became increasingly desolate with forest and strange tundra like meadows which I think were blueberry fields. I started my ride today with an easy stroll through Machias where a raging waterfall crashed through the center of the ... read more

After I left Ontario I flew to Halifax. The Halifax area was overcast and so we could not see the ground until shortly before landing. It was very exciting when the plane finally broke through the clouds and Nova Scotia was right below. The first thing that struck me was just how many lakes there are near Halifax - the entire landscape was dotted with lakes and rivers. They had a late spring in the Maritimes so the trees were mostly still barren and I knew I was a long way away from warm, sunny Vancouver which had bloomed in to spring months before. I made my way in to the city of Halifax where I met up with Mike, Sean and Garreth, three friends from UBC. I spent a few nights with them and ... read more

- Antigonish, NSBrad and Treena On the road again. We spent 6 days and nights in Stephenville, exploring the wide range of food possibilities including, Mcdonald's, Timmy Ho's, Subway, and my favorite, Pizza Delight. We spent a lot of time sleeping, and laying around the hotel room trying to give Treena the best short recovery possible. Our first day on the bikes was a 30 km ride that turned out really well. We were cold and wet, and able to stop at a truckstop, instead of trying to sleep in a field somewhere, while Treena was still nursing her broken rib back to health. 2 days after that, was a major obstacle called Wrechouse Pass. It can be extremely dangerous, but was not too terrible on the day we passed. Still our windiest day, but ... read more

You are going to have to bear with me on this one - this computer has been hijacked and replaced its apostrophe with an è!! We waved au revoir to Niagara and headed off to Halifax with the words of a taxi driver ringing in our ears: there is not much crime here because last year a man snatched a purse and got sent to Federal Prison for 12 years. Not so in Halifax, we spotted the remnants of a smashed car window which indicated to me that we were indeed in Banditville. If only Mr. Taxi Driver knew; he would be unable to sleep at night! As befits our romantic status as Newleyweds, the hostel went all out to get us a private room. Shame that it had bunk beds in it though! Not to ... read more

Day 1The big day :) When I woke up this morning I felt strangely apathetic about the whole idea of the trip, but as the hours ticked by the butterflies in my stomach grew decidedly more agitated. My family drove me out to the airport and sat with me for a few minutes before I made my way through security without hassle, and went upstairs to wait to board the flight. Now, I don't mind flying, but I was slightly annoyed at the fact that my nice direct flight had been cancelled and I had to fly all the way to Ottawa in order to catch a flight to London. Lame. In any case, the flight to Ottawa was uneventful, but I had a row to myself and watched Music & Lyrics on the seatback video ... read more
