After seeing Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, I headed west to Advocate Harbour to check out the trails at Cape Chignecto Provincial Park. In the morning I did the short, Red Rocks trail to the beach and the red rocks. Two longer trails lie at the northern end of the park. To get there, you had to travel 12 km down the gravel "road to hell". Hiked the Three Sisters trail and Squally Point trail - relatively flat trails of about an hours duration each. The both provided nice views of the coastline, as well as various coves and beaches. That evening I walked Driftwood Beach, aptly named. The next morning, I was off to Cape D'Or to see the sights, the "Dory rip", and to walk two very short trails around the top of the coastline. That evening ... read more

Geo: 45.0789, -64.4719Road trip day. It was a very foggy morning but by mid-morning the fog had disappeared and it was sunny and HOT.The fog provided a great backdrop for morning photos. We also visited the memorial for the crash of Swissair Flight 111.We were fortunate to visit Peggy's Cove before the bulk of the tourists arrived.Mahone Bay was very picturesque.Lunenburg was very touristy but interesting and colourful. Unfortunately the Lunenburg 2 was not in port.... read more

Geo: 44.637, -63.6672The hotel is a 15 minute drive from downtown Halifax. We parked by the harbour and walked to the Citadel which is a well designed fortification - so well built that no enemy would seriously consider attacking.St. Paul's Church was next on the itinerary followed by the Maritime Museum. Lots of boats, model ships and description of events in Canada's maritime history.Last destination was Pier 21 Immigration Museum. Thousands of immigrants to Canada passed through the facility on their way to destinations across Canada.Dinner was at a restaurant in the boardwalk before driving back to the hotel.... read more

Hi, All -- We've been home since before July and here it is early September. Clearly I've been stretching out these blogs -- but I didn't want to over-blog anyone. The first photos are of the major cemetery for the victims of the Titanic, which is in the outskirts of Halifax. It was a cloudy day and the place felt sad. So many children . . . Most of the rest of the photos were taken around Mahone Bay and Lunenburg which are on the southeastern shore of Nova Scotia about 2/3 of the way down the lower half. The orangey sign was in a small museum in Mahone Bay and has information about what the "freight" (a person) was allotted during the three month journey, from 1750 - 1752, on a ship from Rotterdam to ... read more

Geo: 44.6368, -63.6672Our final destination today is Halifax - pretty much an all day drive with a stop at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck.Bell was a very interesting person with many interests and accomplishments. His early work was working with the deaf and development of a visual alphabet using symbols to represent human sounds. He also worked with Helen Keller. He experimented with genetics and was successful in breeding sheep which would produce twins most of the time.He was well known for his work with the telephone and air flight. He also successfully developed hydrofoil watercraft.A relative of a friend has a restaurant in Baddeck so we dropped by to say hello. The weather today was mixed but not really a problem because we were in the car most of the day.... read more

Geo: 46.2149, -60.2445Our hotel is about 45 minutes from the Fortress so we were there soon after opening. We had planned 2 activities for the day but soon discovered that a visit to this site was an all day activity. We took the optional walking tour and it was well worth it. The guide gave us a great amount of detail regarding the history.Founded by the French in 1713, it was one of North Americas busiest 18 century seaports. It was taken over twice by the British before being demolished in the 1760's. Reconstruction began in the 1960's and continues today. To date about 1/4 of the original French town and fortifications have been completed. It is the largest historical reconstruction in North America. The original lighthouse built in 1734 was the first in Canada. It is ... read more

Geo: 46.2148, -60.2445The Cabot Trail is basically a day trip unless you choose to do various hikes which can add a lot of time (days). The scenery is very impressive. Significant changes in elevation from ocean level to the plateau area (approx 350m).The lunch restaurant was recommended to us by a young couple last night and the food was excellent. We visited the beach which is said to be the place where Cabot landed. The beach was sandy and was a better landing site than many of the rocky beaches. The sign along the way said Meat Cove was the northern most point so we travelled several spine jolting roads to get there. Definitely remote and one wonders about the motivation to live there.Along the road we saw a sign for Dingwall Lighthouse so took a short diversion. ... read more

Geo: 46.0093, -61.5294After breakfast we headed for Cape Breton. We stopped in Amherst which is a very pretty small town.We encountered our first toll road / $4 - so not a big deal. The highway to Cape Breton is a combination of 2 lane roads and 4 lane divided highway followed by the Canso Causeway and a swing bridge. We are staying overnight in Port Hood and tomorrow will do the Cabot Trail. We are staying at the Hillcrest Hall Country Inn. It was built around 1910 and has in the past been known as the Leadbetter House and the Crestwood Hall. The building went into disrepair in 1923 when the local economy which was based on coal faltered. The Leadbetter family operated a store in Port Hood. This afternoon we visited the Glenora Distillery which is ... read more

Halifax and Peggys Cove – 1 September 2016 We checked into the Chocolate Lake Hotel (yes it was next to a brown lake) for our last 2 nights in Nova Scotia. We had dinner in the hotel which we rarely have done on this holiday. The next morning, we got up early (well 7.00am is early!!!!) as we were heading west along the southern coast for Lunenburg and on the way back, Peggys Cove. What a fantastic day we had. We decided to drive along the freeway out to Lunenburg and drive back to Halifax along the coast. We easily found a park in Lunenburg after an hour’s drive from Halifax. Lunenburg is a small fishing town in Nova Scotia first established in 1753. The Old Town of Lunenburg was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage ... read more

Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia wine country 31 August 2016 We stopped at Windsor on the way to the Annapolis Valley and popped into the Visitors Centre. Wow, were they full of helpful information and maps. It was great talking to them about the area as well as the Annapolis Wine Region. We learned that Windsor was settled in 1685 by the Acadian French, who built a network of dikes along the rivers. It has always been a meeting place, first for the Mi’kmaqs, then the Acadians, and later the English gentry. Windsor became a permanent English settlement in 1749. Its strategic location prompted the British to build Fort Edward. The Blockhouse which we saw, is the only structure remaining from the original Fort and it is the oldest structure of its kind in North America. Fort ... read more
