Geo: 45.5918, -62.6434We had a bit of a late start this morning. Since we are staying at this hotel for three nights, I thought we would slow down the pace a bit. So I let Steve sleep when he was dozing, but he also let me sleep while I was dozing. So we got up late. LOL We left the hotel at 8:35 AM and 64 degrees and we headed east toward Cape Breton. We had definite plans for a route today, but the GPS was lost most of the time and we could not seem to read the maps correctly. Consequently, we changed plans twice. However, you really can't make the wrong decision. There is water everywhere with wonderful views. There is road work, BIG TIME, going on everywhere, but I will say, for the most ... read more

Geo: 45.5918, -62.6434Well, I have to admit to being tired yesterday. After catching up on a week's worth of record keeping and writing 2 blog entries last night, working until after 11 PM, I clearly missed something. I realized this morning that I didn't even talk about Saint John. My bad. So, I will begin where I left off.Saint John is a large city with a very large working harbor. When I planned this trip, I was expecting it to be a small touristy area, but that is not the case. The port is very large, very active and very industrial. We struggled to find a place to get close to the water for some photos and, as you can see from the photos I posted, our success was limited. We had to drive a long ... read more

Geo: 42.2514, -65.7392Today is our last full day aboard the Rotterdam. We leave tomorrow morning so today we have a few things to clear up as well as pack up all our belongings. We go up to breakfast at 8am and find it relatively calm. I think most people were sleeping in this morning so we had a nice peaceful meal. Two eggs, one sausage, English muffin, prunes, orange juice and coffee for me. Mom had scrambled eggs, ham and half a waffle with blueberries with jasmine tea. At 9:30 we walk out to the pool to check out a last minute sale on shirts, jewelry and accessories. It doesn't even start until 10am and the people are already grabbing stuff as the staff is trying to set it up. Mom gets two t-shirts for $5 ... read more

Geo: 44.6462, -63.5739We have an excursion planned for today. Joining us will be the two Traveling Sues and Joni and her husband. All of us are Cruise Critic members with Joni actually making the arrangements for all of us. After breakfast, we make our way forward for disembarkation at 8am. Something happens and we're delayed for about 15 minutes. We exit the gangway and meet Alphonse, holding a sign that says "Joni". That must be us. Within a few minutes all of us are here and Alphonse directs us to his van. As we leave the pier, his first comments are of the Halifax explosion of 1917. We were familiar with this catastrophe through Barbara's presentation yesterday. The Halifax Explosion occurred when a Belgian relief vessel and a French munitions carrier collided in Halifax Harbor during ... read more

June 17, Friday Margree and Baddeck Left Cheticamp. Said good-bye to Carmel and Patrick. Carmel and I exchanged books. Both the evening before and again this morning we all had time for a cup of tea and a good chat. The discussion was about the flooding in Northern BC where two of their children live. The news about this situation was only heard by me on the radio Saturday morning. It was so pleasant running into them again …for the third time. They are heading north on the Cabot Trail and I am aiming for Big Bras d’Or and the Mountain Vista Campground where the proprietor is more concerned in filling his boat with passengers to go see Puffins. The Cottages and campsites are owner on his list … his brochure does not even mention camping. ... read more

May 30, Monday Left the Highbury Campground early because it was raining and trying to eat breakfast in the rain is not on my list of imperative experiences … maybe if I had decided to drive the wilds of Labrador but that part of my BMA was stricken from the schedule. The Macs in the Mall at the end of the road out from the campground beckoned. Sitting there with another $6+ breakie I was able to write a blog and publish it. Had only two terrifying moments when the curser turned into an evil instrument and threw me off my page. Thankfully the guardian angels of the ether persevered and the blog was rescued and published. The drive origianly planned was to Parrsboro but it was too far to do in one day from Wolfville. ... read more

There is free parking in Wolfville. Stopped on Waterfront Road in front of a chimney sticking out of a roof. Thinking that there could be an info map on the bulletin board I approached the chimney. No map to help find the Botanical Garden but masses of info about Chimney Swifts. And all the time I thought they were Swallows! from " The Swift is “A bird best identified by silhouette. The smudge-grey Chimney Swift nimbly manoeuvres over rooftops, fields, and rivers to catch insects. Its tiny body, curving wings, and stiff, shallow wingbeats give it a flight style as distinctive as its fluid, chattering call. This enigmatic little bird spends almost its entire life airborne. When it lands, it can’t perch—it clings to vertical walls inside chimneys or in hollow trees or caves. This ... read more

Saturday, May 28 Kentville It was not hard to leave site #13 at Mountain Top Cottages/Campground because the day before a family with a dog and two kids moved into #12. The kids were running around and the woman did not pick up after her dog. Happy to leave the place before a stepping-into-dog-poo incident occured! I remembering to bring back the electrical plug converter. The standing plugs at the camp sites are designed for the big RV's so i Have bought myself such a plug for $4.50 ... will surely run into similar plugs in other campsites during the next few months. ...drove into Annapolis Royal to attend the Farmers' Market. Day 7 - Wednesday, May 11, 2016 - Sydney, NS - Weather forecast: partly cloudy - temperature: 5°C/41°F - actual: temperature 6°C/43°F - in the morning wind 19 knots - 5 Beaufort This was the first port where we selected to take a shore excursion. We had been here forty years ago and wanted to see what had been accomplished at the Fortress of Louisbourg. The site is part of Parks Canada and is considered as the most elaborate and largest recreationist village in Canada. They have been rebuilding the site since the early the early 1960’s. Parks Canada has opted to reconstruct only about 20% of the site which had originally covered approximately 2 square miles. The most imposing structure on the site is that of the King’s Bastion Barracks which housed the Governor’s Apartments, ... read more
