English Version Follows (Scroll down, it takes a while!) ... read more

While in Twillingate I visited nearby Durrell with some fishing shanties, beaches and rock formations. Today was also the day I hiked the seven km French Beach/Spiller's Cove Trail; a moderate/difficult rating. A lovely trail, coastal in nature with views galore. You are typically hiking high above the ocean but usually in sight. A challenging trail with numerous and strenuous up and downhill areas. In a few select areas you are indeed scrambling over the rocks making it that much more challenging. Rugged in places, just like a good hiking trail should be. Finally, after 2 and a half hours, I completed the trail. Next up, the Lower Little Harbour Trail. Shorter ( 5 km), and less ambitious, it has two focal points - a 30 foot natural arch, and a shorter trail to Jones Cove. ... read more

Was leaving Bonavista for Fogo Island, and since the sun was out for the first time in five days, I revisited the Bonavista Lighthouse to see it in the sunshine. Then on to Fogo. Following the ferry from Farewell to Fogo Island, I visited Fogo to visit the trailheads for my two hikes the following day. On day ten I tackled Brimstone Head, a steep hike up a rocky outcrop. Once there apparently you are at one of the four corners of the flat earth. Great views. Next was Fogo Head. Another very steep climb up to Fogo Head and Middle Head the highest hills in the area. Wonderful views of the islands, tickles and bay of Fogo. To end the day, I hiked the five km Joe Batt's Arm Trail to see the infamous "bronzed" ... read more

I had been meaning to go to St Johns. Just to see it. It is the capital of Newfoundland. But a realization of just how big this island is, and how much riding on the Trans Canada highway I would have to do, just to get to St Johns, made me think of alternatives. Talking with other tourists, I changed the plan. I would now head North up to Twillingate, an old and well known fishing village, and see the sights, and then spend the night at Gander before turning home. The thing about Mother Canada is that they will take care of you from cradle to grave, as long as you don’t go near a cliff. Twillingate light house is set on some of the sharpest, steepest granite cliffs I have ever see, that drop ... read more

Happy Canada Day ... spent July 2015 in Ottawa ... with a favourite friend from Innsbruck ... sorry Justin, cannot be there this year. The sky is blue ... after three days of steady mist, drizzle, rain and downpound! Its 09:00 Nfld Time, people are walking their dogs, making breakfast inside the RV's, going to the clean hot showers, and exiting from their Cougars, Rockwoods, LeSharo or Dutch Van to sniff the air and gaze at the sky. The Dodge Caravan is airing out and the mini-cooler is dripping water. All is well. Preparations for Canada Day Celebrations are underway ... hot dogs and fireworks here at Peyton's Woods Campgrounds and cake all day, or as long as it lasts at the Durell Museum, high on a hill in the town of Twillingate.... read more

Yet another beautiful morning here in Trinity, although somewhat cooler and windier. We have breakfast at the hotel. The boat tour is a bust, unfortunately, as we two are the only sign-ups and a minimum of four people is needed. Our goal today is to get to Twillingate, which is on the tip of another pennisula to the west of Bonavista. We drive south to meet the TCH, then head west. We make good time to Gander, where we stop to gas up and visit a tourist information centre. Gander has a Wal-Mart, so we try unsuccessfully for a styrofoam cooler. From Gander we head more or less due north up the penninsula. The road takes us through Terra Nova Park, and we stop for a pit stop at the interpretation centre. Some excellent exhibits on ... read more

Very nice...one of my photos was nominated and selected as Travel Blog's "Photo of the Week." See link: http://www.travelblog.org/Topics/33772-1.html September 18, 2013 Hotel North in St. Anthony provided a good night's rest and breakfast. We talked with a lot of locals, such a friendly town. We drove to the north end of the Viking Trail so that we could visit another UNESCO World Heritage site, L'Anse aux Meadows. This is the spot of the first authenticated European presence in North America. Vikings were here around 1000 AD and archaeologists have uncovered the remains of three dwellings. We found this place truly fascinating... seeing the artifacts in the well-done interpretive center, wandering around the mounds of the old dwellings, and enjoying the costumed interpreters in the cozy recreated sod buildings. We were the only hut visitors for ... read more

Well not quite at Twillingate......but we spent last nite in Lewisporte, south of it. I am sitting at the Gander Chamber of Commerce (which doubles as the local employment centre) updating the blog. Pat is off looking for an electronics place to get the laptop looked at. We left Tuesday morning for the Viking area of L'anse aux Meadows. It is currently under construction so there is no admission charge (yay!) They have kept it simple, yet realistic of how it was so many years ago when Vikings ruled this part of the land. We walked around (avoided the large tour groups), checked out the replica house and hiked around the boardwalk. Ready to hit the road again before noon. Yes, the black flies found us again! As we headed south we had sightings of 4 ... read more
