It's funny, when you start to head home, the need to be there becomes consuming. I packed up and started driving. Instead of driving 6 hours and then camping again en route to Ottawa, I drove straight through, 13 hours. I got there to the warm welcome of Louise, and surprisingly my son and his dad. We had a lovely dinner out and I had a welcome sleep indoors. Due to the need to reorganize and shop, I didn't leave Ottawa the next day until 2:30. I was able to drive to a camp ground I'd stayed in near the beginning of our trip, Samuel Champlain. I was driving back the way we had come, but now I was alone and I'd seen this landscape already. I was thinking that it would be a long hard ... read more

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to Brandon, MB I go. You may be asking yourself; for a 'world' traveler like Ned, why on earth is she going to Brandon, MB. and more importantly why is she driving? Yup - you read correctly; I am getting into my little black beauty with the slightly dented rear end, and we are driving over 1150km to visit my best friend and her 7 year old daughter. Yikes. even that sounds weird coming from me. Driving, domestic and minors? Oh boy, she truly has lost her mind. Alas, as I get a bit older and my friends grow with me, so do their family dynamics and I am still the single, ahem, solo traveler and it is much easier for me to come to people vs the other way ... read more

English version follows. Ciel bleu, gros nuages blancs et température beaucoup ... read more

Author's notes: 1) I don't want to use any names, so I will refer to people by their initials. 2) Thanks to M for letting me use his photos and video! It feels like we've been living in the car for a week. Actually we left mom's last Friday morning, with the burning goal to make it to Winnipeg on time for Canada Day festivities. None of us had ever spent any time in Winnipeg, so we thought we'd check the city out in party mode. We left Bonfield (North Bay) around 8AM, crossed the US border at Sault Ste Marie to cut under lake Superior. We spent 2.5 rather uneventful days, whizzing through Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota, marveling at the small differences in the cultural landscape (hardly anyone speeds). We made it to Winnipeg Sunday ... read more

Blog entry by D. Nichol - Guest Contributor/Primary Driver May 20 - 22, 2013: East Selkirk, MB. This time, the same as every other time, it felt good to get back to where I once belonged. Calming. Familiar. ‘Back Home’. As we pulled into the driveway shortly after 12:00am on May 20, I could see a sign at the road but it was too dark to read at the time. I commented how I was sure it was something for sale by Dad. After a well deserved sleep-in, we looked at the sign the next day and sure enough, for sale was: 2 electric motors, boat motors, a 14 - 16’ boat cover, and a Tassimo Coffee Maker. It’s funny how Winnipeg’s Craigslist/Kijiji would get tens of thousands of potential buyers a day while the car ... read more

Currently I am driving from Saskatchewan to New Brunswick with my sister. I was home for two days after my overseas travels which was just long enough to do laundry, sleep off the jet lag and sort out my taxes. Yesterday we drove from Kindersley to Winnipeg and it took about 12 hours. The Manitoba border is officially the furthest east in Canada that I have ever been. This is all new territory now. Some people hate driving through Saskatchewan. I always hear the complaint that there is nothing to see. I think those people are driving with blinders on. There is lots to see in Saskatchewan! I love driving around there. Old farmsteads, wildlife, sunrises, sunsets, northern lights, in the summer the fields are in bloom, and in the winter the snow covers everything in ... read more

Hello to all blog followers! The weather right now is 'most unpleasant', which I think is a very slight improvement on this morning's weather - which was 'particularly unpleasant.' Yesterday's weather was 'somewhat unpleasant' and it's likely that tomorrow will be 'less than pleasant' too. However, I'm hopeful that by April it will become more pleasant, and by looking out the window, it surely must! What an awesome winter storm! The wind is howling. Outside, all you can hear is the sound of trees getting hammered and the metal panels of the building getting slammed by the nor'wester. However, the northern lights are spiraling above with vivid greens and bands of white filling the sky with mystery and wonder. It truly is a magical time of the year, with the aurora in full bloom and daylight ... read more

We had a 4-hour layover in Winnipeg, so we took advantage of a city tour that Via arranged with a local bus company. Invariably I find these tours are a great source of historical information about a city and this one was no exception. We visited the legislature, a beauiful sculpture garden, the grave of Louis Riel, and a church, driving through many interesting neighborhoods along the way. Many photos of this tour can be found at https://picasaweb.google.com/109471170472848057534/WinnipegAndPrairies Then, back on the train for the last leg of our journey. We both agreed that if the train were to be delayed a day, we would be happy to remain on board as long as they continued to feed and care for us as they have so far! In the afternoon our car attendant gave a very ... read more
